Atypical low-frequency cortical encoding of speech identifies children with developmental dyslexia.

Slow cortical oscillations play a crucial role in processing the speech amplitude envelope, which is perceived atypically by children with developmental dyslexia. Here we use electroencephalography (EEG) recorded during natural speech listening to identify neural processing patterns involving slow oscillations that may characterize children with dyslexia. In a story listening paradigm, we find that atypical power dynamics and phase-amplitude coupling between delta and theta oscillations characterize dyslexic versus other child control groups (typically-developing controls, other language disor

Increased extent of object-selective cortex in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia patients exhibit deficits in various stages of visual information processing. Despite recent informative efforts to examine visual processing in schizophrenia with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), much remains unknown about the basic function, structure, and organization of key early visual processing areas in schizophrenia. This study examined magnitude and topography of regional brain activity in three early visual processing areas: early retinotopically organized areas (V1-V4), motion-sensitive areas (human area MT, hMT+), and object-recognition areas (lateral occ

Transient deficit hypothesis and dyslexia: examination of whole-parts relationship, retinal sensitivity, and spatial and temporal frequencies.

A defect affecting the transient visual sub-system is believed to be one of the prime factors affecting reading disability. In this study, the transient deficit hypothesis was tested using the global precedence paradigm, examining retinal sensitivity, and comparing of patterns of responses to large versus small stimuli. Participants were three groups of dyslexic, chronologically age-matched, and reading age-matched children. The results revealed that although dyslexic individuals did not show any deficit in processing (a) wholes and parts (Experiment 1); (b) information in peripheral locations

The space of words: semantic integration of space-related words in noun sensorimotor processing.

Evidence suggests that the processing of graspable object nouns elicits specific motor programs related to potential hand-object interactions. Notably, adjectives specifying manipulative features of these objects are integrated into this sensorimotor representation. In the present study, three experiments were conducted to explore the impact of spatial adjectives denoting the position of the object in space on the sensorimotor representation of graspable object nouns. We used a reach-to-grasp compatibility task, in which participants had to categorize object nouns as artifact or natural, by pe

Writing direction influences the spatial representations of past- and future-tense forms: Evidence from eye tracking.

The present study tests the hypothesis that the directionality of reading habits (left-to-right or right-to-left) impacts individuals' representation of nonspatial events. Using the blank screen paradigm, we examine whether eye movements reflect culture-specific spatial biases in processing temporal information, specifically, grammatical tense in Russian and Hebrew. Sixty-two native speakers of Russian (a language with a left-to-right reading and writing system) and 62 native speakers of Hebrew (a language with a right-to-left reading and writing system) listened to verbs in the past or future

Semantic word category processing in semantic dementia and posterior cortical atrophy.

There is general agreement that perisylvian language cortex plays a major role in lexical and semantic processing; but the contribution of additional, more widespread, brain areas in the processing of different semantic word categories remains controversial. We investigated word processing in two groups of patients whose neurodegenerative diseases preferentially affect specific parts of the brain, to determine whether their performance would vary as a function of semantic categories proposed to recruit those brain regions. Cohorts with (i) Semantic Dementia (SD), who have anterior temporal-lob

SM-Omics is an automated platform for high-throughput spatial multi-omics.

The spatial organization of cells and molecules plays a key role in tissue function in homeostasis and disease. Spatial transcriptomics has recently emerged as a key technique to capture and positionally barcode RNAs directly in tissues. Here, we advance the application of spatial transcriptomics at scale, by presenting Spatial Multi-Omics (SM-Omics) as a fully automated, high-throughput all-sequencing based platform for combined and spatially resolved transcriptomics and antibody-based protein measurements. SM-Omics uses DNA-barcoded antibodies, immunofluorescence or a combination thereof, to

Flexibility in spatial and non-spatial feature grouping: an event-related potentials study.

Early perceptual grouping was studied using 256-channels event-related potentials in a choice response task. The task involved the detection of a triangle configuration of Gabor patches among patches of different spatial frequencies. The influence of two task-irrelevant factors was compared. One was the spatial proximity relation between the target patches and the other their relative orientation, a non-spatial relationship. Non-spatial effects were predominant in early peaks N64 and P100 in the occipital areas, and were reduced in size for later peaks. Spatial effects started from N180 in the

Current state of knowledge: perceptual processing by children with hearing impairment.

Perception concerns the identification and interpretation of sensory stimuli in our external environment. The purpose of this review is to survey contemporary views about effects of mild to severe sensorineural hearing impairment (HI) in children on perceptual processing. The review is one of a series of papers resulting from a workshop on Outcomes Research in Children with Hearing Loss sponsored by The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders/National Institutes of Health. Children with HI exhibit heterogeneous patterns of results. In general, however, perceptual proce

Attentional processes in typically developing children as revealed using brain event-related potentials and their source localization in Attention Network Test.

Attention-related processes include three functional sub-components: alerting, orienting, and inhibition. We investigated these components using EEG-based, brain event-related potentials and their neuronal source activations during the Attention Network Test in typically developing school-aged children. Participants were asked to detect the swimming direction of the centre fish in a group of five fish. The target stimulus was either preceded by a cue (centre, double, or spatial) or no cue. An EEG using 128 electrodes was recorded for 83 children aged 12-13 years. RTs showed significant effects

Interconnected cortical networks between primary somatosensory cortex septal columns and posterior parietal cortex in rat.

Visual and somesthetic cues are used for spatial processing in the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) of the mammalian brain. In rats, somatic information collected by the mystacial whiskers is critically involved in constructing a neural representation of the external space. Here, we delineated the topography of the cortical pathway from the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) that may deliver vibrissal cues to PPC for spatial processing. For anterograde tracing, we made small injections of biotinylated dextran amine (BDA) into SI barrel cortex. The injections in the regions directly above the sep

An experiment of nature: brain anatomy parallels cognition and behavior in Williams syndrome.

Williams syndrome (WS) is a neurogenetic-neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by a highly variable and enigmatic profile of cognitive and behavioral features. Relative to overall intellect, affected individuals demonstrate disproportionately severe visual-spatial deficits and enhanced emotionality and face processing. In this study, high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging data were collected from 43 individuals with WS and 40 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Given the distinct cognitive-behavioral dissociations associated with this disorder, we hypothesized that neuroanatomica

Magnocellular pathway impairment in schizophrenia: evidence from functional magnetic resonance imaging.

Sensory processing deficits in schizophrenia have been documented for several decades, but their underlying neurophysiological substrates are still poorly understood. In the visual system, the pattern of pathophysiology reported in several studies is suggestive of dysfunction within the magnocellular visual pathway beginning in early sensory cortex or even subcortically. The present study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate further the neurophysiological bases of visual processing deficits in schizophrenia and in particular the potential role of magnocellular stream dysfu

Temporal discrimination of somesthetic stimuli is impaired in dystonic patients.

Clinical and experimental evidence documents abnormal somatosensory functions in dystonia. Despite the fact that somatosensory processing is inherently temporal, mainly spatial aspects of somatosensory functions have so far been assessed in dystonic patients. Seven patients with idiopathic dystonia and nine healthy controls were given pairs of non-noxious electrical stimuli separated by different time intervals and asked to report if they perceived single or double stimuli. Somesthetic temporal discrimination thresholds (STDT) were obtained by computing the shortest time interval at which stim

Speed of visual processing across the visual field.

Despite the phenomenological experience of vision being stable and uniform in both space and time, our visual system constructs this representation from markedly inhomogeneous spatial and temporal structures. While considerable progress has been made in understanding the inhomogeneities in spatial vision, much less attention has been given to the inhomogeneities in the temporal dynamics of vision. Specifically, little is known about how speed of processing varies across the visual field. In this non-systematic review, we focus primarily on psychophysical and neurophysiological studies of low-l

Novelty responses to relational and non-relational information in the hippocampus and the parahippocampal region: a comparison based on event-related fMRI.

We conducted two functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments that examined novelty responses in the human medial temporal lobe (MTL) to determine whether the hippocampus makes contributions to memory processing that differ from those of structures in the adjacent parahippocampal region. In light of proposals that such differential contributions may pertain to relational processing demands, we assessed event-related fMRI responses in the MTL for novel single objects and for novel spatial and non-spatial object relationships; subjects were asked to detect these different types of no

Spatial and temporal aspects of navigation in two neurological patients.

We present two cases (A.C. and W.J.) with navigation problems resulting from parieto-occipital right hemisphere damage. For both the cases, performance on the neuropsychological tests did not indicate specific impairments in spatial processing, despite severe subjective complaints of spatial disorientation. Various aspects of navigation were tested in a new virtual reality task, the Virtual Tübingen task. A double dissociation between spatial and temporal deficits was found; A.C. was impaired in route ordering, a temporal test, whereas W.J. was impaired in scene recognition and route continuat

Comparing Parietal Quantity-Processing Mechanisms between Humans and Macaques.

Quantity processing studies typically assume functional homology between regions within macaque and human intraparietal sulcus (IPS), where apparently similar locations respond to broadly similar tasks. However, macaque single cell neurophysiology is difficult to compare to human functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI); particularly in multivoxel pattern analysis and adaptation paradigms, or where different tasks are used. fMRI approaches incorporating neural tuning models allow closer comparison, revealing human numerosity-selective responses only outside the IPS. Extensive functional si

The effect of blur on cortical responses to global form and motion.

Global form and motion sensitivity undergo long development in childhood with motion sensitivity rather than form being impaired in a number of childhood disorders and both impaired in adult clinical populations. This suggests extended development and vulnerability of extrastriate cortical areas associated with global processing. However, in some developmental and clinical populations, it remains unclear to what extent impairments might reflect deficits at earlier stages of visual processing, such as reduced visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. To address this, we investigated the impact of
