BACKGROUND: Cleft palate of the primary or secondary type, is accompanied with various devastating physical and psychological effects. The purpose of this case study was to highlight the psychosocial problems the patients with these defects encounter both at the initial and later stages oftheirlives.
METHOD: The case study focused on the history and clinical examination of a 25-year-old, single, female patient who presented with hypernasality and misarticulation of speech secondary to an incomplete cleft of the secondary palate which was not treated.
RESULTS: The patient was found to break d

This work relates a clinical experiment about use of the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT). This method is mainly designed for communication/voice disorders caused by Parkinson's disease. Their authors widely diffused worldwide this treatment that is now supported and illustrated, among other things, by some neuro-radiological studies. Our work will deal with the indications provided by the speech therapist (Parkinson and non-parkinson hypophonia), the implications for the patient and the practice of speech therapy according to some therapeutic programs led in our center. Beyond the initial

BACKGROUND: Perceptual speech assessment is central to the evaluation of speech outcomes associated with cleft palate and velopharyngeal dysfunction. However, the complexity of this process is perhaps sometimes underestimated.
AIMS: To draw together the many different strands in the complex process of perceptual speech assessment and analysis, and make recommendations for practice.
MAIN CONTRIBUTION: This review examines issues such as data sampling, data collection/recording, archiving, the advantages and disadvantages of lay and specialist listeners, approaches to data analysis, reliabilit

In this paper we consider phonetic and phonological aspects of the English voiceless affricate /t integral of/ as it is realised by children with developmental speech disorders. The speakers described in the study have normal /t/ but disordered /integral of/ and /t integral of/. Using electropalatography (Reading EPG), we compare the stop and fricative phases of /t integral of/ to independent /t/ and /integral of/. This comparison shows that the place of articulation of /t integral of/ can be predicted from that of independent /integral of/. There is a strict requirement for the affricate's st

The paper is concerned with a study into the characteristic features of language pathology in children with early infantile autism of the process genesis. 68 patients with early infantile autism were entered into the study. The language as the earliest function of the central nervous system may suffer first of all. Language disorders of varying pathogenetic levels consequent on retarded development, catatonic disorders, mental regression, and pathology of the associative process have been revealed. Measures aimed at language pathology rehabilitation have been elaborated.

PURPOSE: This study examined whether phoneme-level posterior probabilities generated by an articulatory-informed deep learning model (Phonet) can serve as interpretable and sensitive markers of articulatory impairment in motor speech disorders (MSDs). The goal was to determine whether these features distinguish individuals with and without MSDs and reflect varying severity levels of articulatory impairment.
METHOD: A total of 676 participants (199 with MSDs, 477 without MSDs) completed a remotely captured word repetition task. Speech recordings were phonetically aligned, and posterior probabi

Brain tumours frequently involve eloquent cortical and subcortical networks, leading to speech-language pathology (SLP) disorders, including aphasia, dysarthria, and dysphagia. Evidence remains fragmented and largely derived from stroke-based frameworks that may not fully reflect neuro-oncological populations. This review synthesised literature on SLP disorders in adults with primary brain tumours across the pre-operative, peri-operative, and post-operative phases. Studies were identified through searches of PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science (2000-2026) and n

BACKGROUND: Speech intelligibility is a core outcome in the assessment and treatment of individuals with developmental motor speech disorders. While open-set intelligibility testing is widely used, a closed-set phonetic intelligibility assessment, which evaluates listener perception of systematically varied speech contrasts, offers a focused approach to identifying segmental errors that impact intelligibility. However, such tools are unavailable in Hebrew.
AIMS: This study introduces a novel, preliminary closed-set phonetic intelligibility tool designed for Hebrew speakers with development mo

BACKGROUND: After a stroke, it is highly likely that an individual will experience substantial fatigue that can significantly affect recovery and function; stroke survivors also have more than a 50% chance of having at least one speech-language disorder. Current reviews of post-stroke fatigue have not provided evidence focused on speech-language disorders or the potential influence they may have on post-stroke fatigue and related recovery.
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this review was to determine how speech-language disorders are represented in post-stroke fatigue research and to catalogue methods

INTRODUCTION: Having verified the true association between the Zika virus and the occurrence of microcephaly, studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of the infection on fetal development. Congenital Zika virus syndrome is a currently known condition but little addressed regarding speech, language, and hearing disorders in children.
OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of speech, language, and hearing disorders in children with congenital Zika virus syndrome.
METHODS: This systematic review followed the PRISMA instructions and the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines, and it was re

The purpose of this study was to explore how school-based speech-language pathologists (SLPs) determine eligibility for children with speech sound disorders (SSDs). Presently, there is substantial variability nationwide with respect to if or how children with SSDs receive speech therapy in public schools. We report the results of a nation-wide survey of school-based SLPs, which further underscore this variability. Findings provide insight into which and how many factors SLPs report contributing to eligibility decisions, as well as which and how many components of an assessment are mandatory. O

Purpose Speech and language disorders are hallmark features of 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22qDS). Learning disabilities, cognitive deficits, palate abnormalities, velopharyngeal dysfunction, behavioral differences, and various medical and psychiatric conditions are also major features of this syndrome. The goal of this document is to summarize the state of the art of current clinical and scientific knowledge regarding 22qDS for speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and provide recommendations for clinical management. Method Best practices for management of individuals with 22qDS were developed b

In the first part of this seminar paper, speech-language development tests were presented and the importance of the differential diagnosis of the underlying causes of the diagnosed language development disorder was discussed. The second part focuses on counseling and training of the parents, as well as the different treatment methods used for speech-language therapy for affected children in out- and inpatient settings. These procedures should be applied according to the individual developmental age. The official guidelines are to be respected, especially for medical speech-language therapy. Ge

BACKGROUND: Implementation fidelity refers to the degree to which an intervention or programme adheres to its original design. This paper examines implementation fidelity in the Sound Start Study, a clustered randomised controlled trial of computer-assisted support for children with speech sound disorders (SSD).
METHOD: Sixty-three children with SSD in 19 early childhood centres received computer-assisted support (Phoneme Factory Sound Sorter [PFSS] - Australian version). Educators facilitated the delivery of PFSS targeting phonological error patterns identified by a speech-language pathologi

PURPOSE: To investigate how speech-language pathologists (SLPs) report involving parents in intervention for phonology-based speech sound disorders (SSDs), and to describe the home practice that they recommend. Further aims were to describe the training SLPs report providing to parents, to explore SLPs' beliefs and motivations for involving parents in intervention, and to determine whether SLPs' characteristics are associated with their self-reported practice.
METHOD: An online survey of 288 SLPs working with SSD in Australia was conducted.
RESULT: The majority of SLPs (96.4%) reported invol

Interstitial and terminal 6q25 deletions are associated with developmental delays, hypotonia, eye pathologies, craniofacial dysmorphologies, and structural brain anomalies. In most cases, speech and language deficits are not described in detail. We report on a case (Patient 1, age 7 years) with a de novo 6q25.3-qter deletion, 11.1 Mb long and encompassing 108 genes, and a case (Patient 2, age 5 years) with an inherited interstitial 6q25.3 deletion, located within Patient 1's deletion region and 403 kb long, the smallest 6q25 deletion reported to date. Both children have hypotonia, motor speech
