Laboratory speech-in-noise measures fail to predict real-world listening performance. This study tested whether matching laboratory to real-world environments using self-reported noise sources from ecological momentary assessment (EMA) improves predictions. Speech intelligibility and listening effort were measured in virtual acoustic environments in 51 normal-hearing adults, who then self-rated both via EMA for 1 week. Laboratory intelligibility predicted real-world intelligibility only when laboratory and real-world environments were matched. Effort results were not significant. Findings sugg

BACKGROUND: Patients with infantile-onset Pompe disease (IOPD) can be treated by recombinant human acid alpha glucosidase (rhGAA) replacement beginning at birth with excellent survival rates, but they still commonly present with speech disorders. This study investigated the progress of speech disorders in these early-treated patients and ascertained the relationship with treatments.
METHODS: Speech disorders, including hypernasal resonance, articulation disorders, and speech intelligibility, were scored by speech-language pathologists using auditory perception in seven early-treated patients

Parents' knowledge of cochlear implantation (CI) is very limited. How could we graphically demonstrate the problems faced by implanted children to their parents?Parallels between speech perception of implanted patients and speech perception after comb filtration by normal hearing persons mean that it is possible to evaluate self-training of inexperienced subjects to perceive spectrally deprived speech and to show the complexities of implanted children's acoustic perception to the children's relatives. Speech consisted of five bands of the 50 Hz width in the frequency range of 200 to 6250 Hz. E

BACKGROUND: Achieving optimal functional speech outcomes is essential in tongue reconstruction. Variables such as recipient artery, tumor size, and radiotherapy can impact tongue movement and speech outcome. Various tongue resection types and reconstruction methods exist. Our study examined post-hemiglossectomy speech outcomes by considering the reconstruction type and other relevant factors.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 24 patients who underwent hemi-tongue reconstruction and speech rehabilitation. The evaluation included articulation, intelligibility, and specific syllabic cha

Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) is an overgrowth disorder in which macroglossia is one of the main signs. We investigated the long-term outcome of tongue surgery reduction (TRS) on taste and speech in patients with BWS who were more than 5 years of age and had undergone surgical anterior wedge resection of the tongue. A questionnaire was used to assess medical history and to determine some aspects of speech, taste, psychological well-being, and degree of satisfaction with regard to TRS and tongue mobility. Speech sound error pattern and degree of intelligibility were measured by a speech the

BACKGROUND: Severe dysarthria and global aphasia drastically reduce speech intelligibility, confining communication to familiar partners. Automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems may show limited performance when processing such atypical speech.
OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a speaker-dependent Voice-Input Voice-Output Communication Aid (VIVOCA) embedded in the CapisciAMe app can decode the speech of a person with severe dysarthria and aphasia more accurately than rehabilitation professionals human listeners (RPHL).
METHODS: We conducted a single-case proof-of-concept study. A 34-year-ol

OBJECTIVES: Recent research has demonstrated that pupil dilation, a measure of mental effort (cognitive processing load), is sensitive to differences in speech intelligibility. The present study extends this outcome by examining the effects of masker type and age on the speech reception threshold (SRT) and mental effort.
DESIGN: In young and middle-aged adults, pupil dilation was measured while they performed an SRT task, in which spoken sentences were presented in stationary noise, fluctuating noise, or together with a single-talker masker. The masker levels were adjusted to achieve 50% or 8

Purpose The aim of this study was to determine how the speech disorder profiles in Down syndrome (DS) relate to reduced intelligibility, atypical overall quality, and impairments in the subsystems of speech production (phonation, articulation, resonance, and prosody). Method Auditory-perceptual ratings of intelligibility, overall quality, and features associated with the subsystems of speech production were obtained from recordings of 79 children and adults with DS. Ratings were made for sustained vowels (62 of 79 speakers) and short sentences (79 speakers). The data were analyzed to determine

Active middle ear implants such as the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) represent effective treatment options for patients with conductive or mixed hearing loss when conventional hearing aids are insufficient. Nevertheless, postoperative speech intelligibility varies considerably, even among patients with comparable audiometric profiles. This first part of a two-part prospective observational study aimed to analyze outcomes and identify clinically accessible predictors of postoperative speech intelligibility. Twenty adults who underwent unilateral VSB implantation were included. Audiological assessme

INTRODUCTION: Dysarthria is highly prevalent in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) and speech changes have already been detected in patients with prodromal PD on the acoustic level. However, the present study directly tracks underlying articulatory movements with electromagnetic articulography to investigate early speech alterations on the kinematic level in isolated REM sleep behavior disorder (iRBD) and compares them to PD and control speakers.
METHODS: Kinematic data of 23 control speakers, 22 speakers with iRBD, and 23 speakers with PD were collected. Amplitude, duration, and average

PURPOSE: Dysarthria is common among children with cerebral palsy (CP) and results in poor speech intelligibility and subsequently low communicative participation. Neuroplasticity evidence suggests that adherence to principles of motor learning (PML) improves motor speech intervention outcomes. Motor speech interventions aim to improve speech intelligibility and ultimately facilitate participation, but the effectiveness of these interventions and their inclusion of PML are not clear. Aims are as follows: (a) evaluate the effectiveness motor speech interventions in improving speech intelligibili

Advances in the treatment of Pompe disease have improved life expectancy and quality of life, but speech and oromotor function remain significantly affected. The purpose of this study was to expand on existing data and present new findings of speech acoustic and physiologic outcomes in Pompe disease. A retrospective analysis was carried out on results of speech, language and oromotor tests carried out in 14 children diagnosed with Pompe disease. The assessment battery included standardized tests of language, picture naming, maximum performance tests, and oromotor resistance tasks. Speech produ

The purpose of this study is to describe the speech characteristics in an English-speaking Ugandan boy of 4.5 years who has a rare paramedian craniofacial cleft (unilateral lip, alveolar, palatal, nasal and maxillary cleft, and associated hypertelorism). Closure of the lip together with the closure of the hard and soft palate (one-stage palatal closure) was performed at the age of 5 months. Objective as well as subjective speech assessment techniques were used. The speech samples were perceptually judged for articulation, intelligibility and nasality. The Nasometer was used for the objective m

INTRODUCTION: Competing noise in the environment negatively affects speech intelligibility, particularly when listening at a distance. This is especially true for children with hearing loss in classroom environments where the signal-to-noise ratio is often poor. Remote microphone technology has been shown to be highly beneficial at improving the signal-to-noise ratio in hearing device users. Children with bone conduction devices, however, often must rely on indirect transmission of the acoustic signal for commonly used classroom-based remote microphone listening (e.g., digital adaptive microph

A 27-year-old man, a law student, underwent partial glossectomy, right hemimandibulectomy and radical neck dissection due to recurrent carcinoma of the oral cavity. These surgical procedures resulted in severe swallowing and speech difficulties for which he was treated by tube feeding and speech therapy, respectively. Emphasis in therapy was placed on compensatory articulator techniques for the improvement of speech intelligibility. Those adaptive tongue stump, labial, and palato-pharyngeal compensations which were employed are discussed. After. 9 months of speech therapy, he was judged to hav

PURPOSE: The ability to understand speech under adverse listening conditions is highly variable across listeners. Despite this, studies have found that listeners with normal hearing display consistency in their ability to perceive speech across different types of degraded speech, suggesting that, for at least these listeners, global skills may be involved in navigating the ambiguity in speech signals. However, there are substantial differences in the perceptual challenges faced by listeners with normal and impaired hearing. This study examines whether listeners with sensorineural hearing loss
