Comfort First: Development and pilot testing of a web-based video training to disseminate Comfort Matters dementia care.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (ADRD) are a leading cause of disability and death. In late-stage ADRD most people prioritize comfort, but care to achieve comfort is rare. Comfort Matters combines palliative and geriatric care practices for nursing home dementia care, but in-person training reaches few sites. To facilitate dissemination, we developed Comfort First, a web-based training toolkit with video demonstration of Comfort Matters practices. METHODS: We developed and pilot-tested Comfort First (NIA Intervention Stage 1). Stakeholder advisors representing nursing home r

Functional analysis and treatment of bizarre speech.

Contingencies maintaining the bizarre speech of a 29-year-old woman with mild mental retardation and schizophrenia were analysed. Bizarre vocalizations occurred most frequently during demand conditions and least frequently during one-to-one interaction with attention contingent upon appropriate vocalizations. Treatment conditions derived from the assessment consisted of guided compliance and ignoring plus contingent attention. Treatment effects generalized to direct-care staff in day and residential settings. Analysis of the variables controlling bizarre speech facilitated development of inter

[Racial discrimination against employees in German rehabilitation centres: A survey of managers, quality managers and complaints managers].

PURPOSE: Racial discrimination directed at employees can significantly affect their well-being, job satisfaction, and professional development. In the German healthcare system, there is a lack of systematic research on the experiences of staff members who are affected by racism, particularly in rehabilitation facilities, where collaboration among staff and patients poses social challenges. This study aims to examine the extent and nature of such experiences and to assess existing complaint and prevention structures. METHODS: Between October and November 2024, 1,322 inpatient rehabilitation fa

'You say you are a TB doctor, but actually, you do not have any power': health worker (de)motivation in the context of integrated, hospital-based tuberculosis care in eastern China.

BACKGROUND: In China, tuberculosis (TB) care, traditionally provided through the Centre for Disease Control (CDC), has been integrated into 'designated' public hospitals at County level, with hospital staff taking on delivery of TB services supported by CDC staff. Little is known about the impact of this initiative on the hospital-based health workers who were delegated to manage TB. Drawing on a case study of two TB 'designated' hospitals in Zhejiang province, we explored factors influencing hospital-based health workers' motivation in the context of integrated TB service delivery. METHODS:

Understanding key worker experiences at an Australian Early Childhood Intervention Service.

The delivery of family-centred practice (FCP) within Early Childhood Intervention Services (ECISs) for young children with a disability or development delay conceptualises that children's learning environments, parenting, family and community supports intersect to have the greatest impact on the developing child. The transdisciplinary key worker model is considered a best-practice approach within ECISs whereby staff work collaboratively across disciplinary boundaries to plan and implement services for children and their families. Research suggests families who have a key worker have better rel

Advancing employee engagement through a healthy workplace strategy.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been increased focus on improving the quality of the working lives of staff in health care organizations. Improved worker engagement is a realizable outcome of such an approach, provided that it is based on reliable and relevant data and is tailored to the specific environment in which it is being implemented. ASSESSMENT OF PROBLEM: An intervention project was designed to develop an organization-wide approach to employee workplace health.

The Effects of a 12-Week Faculty and Staff Exercise Program on Health-Related Variables in a University Setting.

The obesity epidemic has grown in the past decade due to physical inactivity (i.e., having a sedentary job) and an increase in caloric intake. This problem combined with the reluctance of many faculty and staff members exercising in the same environment as student's presents a unique challenge in an academic setting. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a 12-week exercise program focused toward the faculty and staff in improving several health-related variables such as curl-ups, push-ups, sit-and-reach, and balance. Fifty-seven faculty and staff participated in the cur

Trauma-Informed Principles in Practice: A Mixed-Method Study of Co-Producing Systems Change With People Who Have Experienced Multiple Disadvantage.

BACKGROUND: Health and social care services increasingly recognise the value of involving people with lived experience in service design and delivery. For people who have experienced multiple disadvantage (combinations of homelessness, mental ill health, addiction, involvement with the criminal justice systems or domestic violence/abuse), participating in professional settings may be challenging and can risk re-traumatisation and greater disillusionment. However, gaining confidence and competency to do this offers opportunities for personal and professional development, contributing to meaning

METHODS: This sequential exploratory mixed-methods study comprised qualitative and quantitative phases. In Phase I, 21 cardiac nursing specialists were purposively recruited and

Improving Nursing Oral Care Practice for Community-Dwelling Care-Dependent Older People.

AIM: Oral care is one of the most neglected nursing practices owing to a lack of training, standard nursing oral care guidelines and low confidence and skills. There is little evidence to inform the development of oral care training and guidelines, which ideally should be done in collaboration with oral health professionals. Further, there is a lack of research, particularly in New Zealand, with nursing staff caring for care-dependent older people, including those ageing in their own homes. This pilot study aimed to determine the impact of oral care training on nursing staff knowledge, attitud

Resident aggression toward staff at a center for the developmentally disabled.

Few studies have examined factors contributing to nonfatal assaults to staff working in residential care facilities. The authors evaluated resident assaults toward direct care/nursing staff at an intermediate Care Facility for Individuals with Mental Retardation (ICF/MR), which included observations of work areas, employee interviews, calculation of injury and assault rates for 2004 to 2007 from Occupational Safety and Health Administration Logs, and review of state ICP/MR guidelines. Most staff interviewed reported having been injured during physical restraint of a resident and the average ra
