Confidence bands for distribution functions when parameters are estimated from the data: a non-Monte-Carlo approach.

A method is given for computing simultaneous confidence intervals for order statistics obtained from a distribution depending on one or more parameters that must be estimated from the data. This produces a confidence band for the distribution itself and may be regarded as an extension of Kolmogorov's goodness-of-fit test to the case where the distribution depends on parameters that must be estimated from the data. The method works whenever the joint confidence set for the parameters is convex and the quantile function is linear in the parameters. Two special cases are treated in some detail: t

Bayesian analysis of overdispersed chromosome aberration data with the negative binomial model.

The usual assumption of a Poisson model for the number of chromosome aberrations in controlled calibration experiments implies variance equal to the mean. However, it is known that chromosome aberration data from experiments involving high linear energy transfer radiations can be overdispersed, i.e. the variance is greater than the mean. Present methods for dealing with overdispersed chromosome data rely on frequentist statistical techniques. In this paper. the problem of overdispersion is considered from a Bayesian standpoint. The Bayes Factor is used to compare Poisson and negative binomial

HUP: A Holistic Uncertainty-Aware Motion Planner for Autonomous Driving.

Uncertainties arising from inherent observation randomness and model limitations significantly affect the robustness and adaptability of motion planning for autonomous vehicles. Existing methods typically incorporate uncertainty into planning outcomes or risk measures but do not explicitly model and propagate it throughout the planning pipeline, leaving its intrinsic influence underexplored. To address this limitation, we propose a holistic uncertainty-aware motion planner (HUP) that explicitly models and propagates uncertainties across the entire pipeline. In the scene representation stage, s

Bayesian reanalysis of avelumab maintenance therapy in Asian and Japanese patients with advanced urothelial carcinoma: evidence from the JAVELIN Bladder 100 trial.

BACKGROUND: The JAVELIN Bladder 100 trial established avelumab maintenance as standard care for advanced urothelial carcinoma (UC). However, Asian (n = 147) and Japanese (n = 73) subgroups showed non-significant results with wide confidence intervals, as expected given limited sample sizes. We sought to provide complementary insights using Bayesian methods that quantify probability of treatment benefit. METHODS: We performed Bayesian reanalysis using published data from JAVELIN Bladder 100. The global trial data (n = 700; HR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.63-0.91) informed prior distributions across four

Effects of an Extreme Weather Event on Primate Populations.

OBJECTIVES: With contemporary, human-induced climate change at a crisis point, extreme weather events (e.g., cyclones, heatwaves, floods) are becoming more frequent, intense, and difficult to predict. These events can wreak rapid and significant changes on ecosystems; thus, it is imperative to understand how wildlife communities respond to these disruptions. Primates are perceived as being a largely adaptable order, but we often lack the quantitative data to rigorously assess how they are impacted by extreme environmental change. Leveraging detections from a long-term camera trap survey, this

Driving style diversity in highway weaving areas: A drone-based analysis of population distribution patterns and operational parameter relationships.

Driving style heterogeneity significantly influences traffic safety and efficiency in highway weaving areas, yet how operational parameters systematically shape population-level behavioral patterns remains unclear. This study examines the relationships between weaving area operational characteristics and driving style population distribution patterns using drone-collected trajectory data from seven highway weaving areas, obtaining 12,707 complete vehicle trajectories. Six driving style features incorporating speed and acceleration metrics were extracted, and Gaussian Mixture Model clustering i

Distinct Signatures of Chromosomal Involvement in 59 251 Translocations Across 58 Tumor Types. A Novel Perspective.

Chromosomal translocations are key events in cancer, driving oncogenesis by disrupting and deregulating critical genes. While specific tumor-associated translocations are well studied, the frequencies and distributions of most remain unknown. Additionally, the role of chromosomal reshuffling in translocations has received little attention. This study presents data on the chromosomal involvement in 59 251 translocations reported in 58 tumor entities, including both benign and malignant tumors. Unlike studies focusing on tumor-specific abnormalities identified at the chromosome band level, this

Impact of sublineage diversity on intrinsic susceptibility of Beijing genotype Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health issue, with drug-resistant TB posing a major challenge. The genetic lineage of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) is known to influence various aspects, including drug resistance. Still, the relationship between different lineages and drug resistance levels, especially in the context of the Beijing genotype, requires further exploration. This study aimed to investigate the disparities in drug resistance among diverse lineages of Mtb. We analyzed 193 clinical isolates from drug-resistant TB patients, among them 91.2% were MDR/pre-XDR-TB. Sampl

SIEVEseq: unified differential expression, variability, and skewness analyses using RNA-Seq data.

RNA-Seq data analysis is commonly biased towards detecting differentially expressed genes and insufficiently conveys the complexity of gene expression changes between biological conditions. This bias arises because discrete count models cannot fully and independently parameterize the mean, variance, and skewness of gene expression distributions. Therefore, a unified statistical framework that simultaneously tests differential expression, variability, and skewness is needed. We present SIEVEseq, a statistical methodology that provides such a framework. SIEVEseq embraces a compositional data ana

A New Method for Automated Identification and Morphometry of Myelinated Fibers Through Light Microscopy Image Analysis.

Nerve morphometry is known to produce relevant information for the evaluation of several phenomena, such as nerve repair, regeneration, implant, transplant, aging, and different human neuropathies. Manual morphometry is laborious, tedious, time consuming, and subject to many sources of error. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a new method for the automated morphometry of myelinated fibers in cross-section light microscopy images. Images from the recurrent laryngeal nerve of adult rats and the vestibulocochlear nerve of adult guinea pigs were used herein. The proposed pipeline for fiber segm

A framework for causal estimand selection under positivity violations.

Estimating the causal effect of a treatment or health policy with observational data can be challenging due to an imbalance of and a lack of overlap between treated and control covariate distributions. In the presence of limited overlap, researchers choose between (1) methods (e.g., inverse probability weighting) that imply traditional estimands but whose estimators are at risk of considerable bias and variance; and (2) methods (e.g., overlap weighting) which imply a different estimand by modifying the target population to reduce variance. We propose a framework for navigating the tradeoffs be

Statistical overview of the Sniffin' sticks olfactory test from the perspectives of anosmia and hyposmia.

The Sniffin' Sticks test is evaluated by summing the scores of threshold, discrimination, and identification subtests to establish an olfactory diagnosis (anosmia, hyposmia, normosmia). However, variations in thresholds, ranges and inconsistencies have been observed. Statistical analyses (distributions, quantiles), protocol simulation, and implementations of the Sniffin' Sticks test were conducted. This study contributes a statistical revision: determining a cut-off point for the total TDI score, optimising the number of alternatives in the identification subtest, and equalising correct respon

Scaling behaviour of heartbeat intervals obtained by wavelet-based time-series analysis.

Biological time-series analysis is used to identify hidden dynamical patterns which could yield important insights into underlying physiological mechanisms. Such analysis is complicated by the fact that biological signals are typically both highly irregular and non-stationary, that is, their statistical character changes slowly or intermittently as a result of variations in background influences. Previous statistical analyses of heartbeat dynamics have identified long-range correlations and power-law scaling in the normal heartbeat, but not the phase interactions between the different frequenc
