Typhlitis induced by Histomonas meleagridis affects relative but not the absolute Escherichia coli counts and invasion in the gut in turkeys.

Unlike in chickens, dynamics of the gut microbiome in turkeys is limitedly understood and no data were yet published in context of pathological changes following experimental infection. Thus, the impact of Histomonas meleagridis-associated inflammatory changes in the caecal microbiome, especially the Escherichia coli population and their caecal wall invasion in turkeys was investigated. Birds experimentally inoculated with attenuated and/or virulent H. meleagridis and non-inoculated negative controls were divided based on the severity of macroscopic caecal lesions. The high throughput amplicon

Microflora in oral ecosystems and salivary secretion rates--A 3-year follow-up after radiation therapy to the head and neck region.

OBJECTIVE: Results indicate that late improvements of radiation therapy (RT) in the head and neck region may diminish the long-term effects on salivary glands and oral microflora. The aim was therefore to analyze salivary secretion rates and oral microflora over time in RT subjects. DESIGN: Twelve dentate subjects (28±2 teeth) and 12 controls were included. A clinical examination was performed and the salivary secretion rates were determined. Microbial samples, analyzed using cultivation technique, were collected from the soft tissues, supragingival plaque and gingival crevice region. RESULT

Infectious granulomatous dermatitis associated with Rothia mucilaginosa bacteremia: A case report.

Infections with rare pathogens are being recognized with increasing frequency in severely immunocompromised patients. As a result of these patients' underlying compromised defenses and susceptibility to atypical organisms, tissue biopsies from patients within this population may demonstrate nonclassical histopathological findings. Here, we describe an unusual granulomatous reaction to gram-positive cocci in the skin of a 52-year-old man undergoing salvage chemotherapy for acute myeloid leukemia. The patient presented with a papular eruption on the arms, trunk, and face and fever; concomitant b

Fecal carriage of multidrug-resistant organisms increases the risk of hepatic encephalopathy in patients with cirrhosis: insights from gut microbiota and metabolite features.

BACKGROUND: The impact of the fecal multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) carriage on the gut microbiota, metabolite alterations, and cirrhosis-related complications remains unclear. METHODS: Eighty-eight patients with cirrhosis and 22 healthy volunteers were analyzed for plasma metabolites, fecal MDROs, and microbiota composition. The fecal bacterial and fungal composition was assessed using 16S ribosomal RNA and internal transcribed spacer sequencing, whereas plasma metabolomic analysis was evaluated via untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Predictors of cirrhosis-related outco

Isolation of bacteria from cervical lymph nodes in patients with oral cancer.

Thirty patients with oral mucosal cancer were studied in relation to oral mucosal damage and bacterial translocation to the regional lymph nodes in the neck. All 30 patients (gingiva 11, tongue 13, cheek mucosa four, oral floor two) underwent extensive, clean-contaminated, head-and-neck surgery (including neck dissection) with free flap reconstruction. A total of 153 lymph nodes was harvested for microbial and histological examination. Viable bacteria were isolated from 70 lymph nodes (45.8%) from 25 patients (83.3%). Bacterial cells in the nodes were detected by scanning electron microscopy.

Strain-level analysis of gut-resident pro-inflammatory viridans group Streptococci suppressed by long-term cotrimoxazole prophylaxis among HIV-positive children in Zimbabwe.

Antimicrobials have become a mainstay of healthcare in the past century due to their activity against pathogens. More recently, it has become clear that they can also affect health via their impact on the microbiota and inflammation. This may explain some of their clinical benefits despite global increases in antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and reduced antimicrobial effectiveness. We showed in a randomized controlled trial of stopping versus continuing cotrimoxazole prophylaxis among HIV-positive Zimbabwean children taking antiretroviral therapy (ART), that continuation of cotrimoxazole persist

EvoraPlus Oral Probiotic Tablet: New paradigm for Caries Prevention in Children.

BACKGROUND: According to the World Health Organization, probiotics are live microorganisms that, when administered in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit to the host. The use of oral probiotics in children to improve oral health may lead to nonpathogenic bacteria replacing cariogenic bacteria. The Evora Plus oral probiotics tablet is the first such oral probiotics tablet containing a proprietary blend of three select species of naturally occurring oral bacteria, each with a specific function for maintaining a healthy oral environment. These strains include Streptococcus oralis KJ3sm, Str

Chalcone derivatives against biofilm production of Streptococcus mutans by glucosyltransferase C inhibition.

Dental caries remain an unresolved public health issue. Streptococcus mutans, a principal microorganism in the mouth, is closely associated with the onset and progression of dental caries. S. mutans adheres to tooth surfaces and synthesizes extracellular polysaccharides via the enzyme glucosyltransferase (Gtf), utilizing sucrose and forming biofilms. GtfC is linked to soluble and insoluble glucan synthesis, a significant factor in the adhesion of S. mutans to tooth surfaces and bacterial cell aggregation within biofilms. Chalcones, primary precursors for flavonoid and isoflavonoid biosynthesis
