Transarterial embolization to control posterior epistaxis.

Posterior nasal epistaxis is a challenging problem for the otolaryngologist, particularly when patients are critically ill after significant blood loss. The purpose of this paper is to describe a new radiologic technique designed to enhance the treatment of acute nasal hemorrhage. Seven patients with posterior nasal epistaxis underwent portable, computerized, digital subtraction angiography before embolization. Results are presented, and the advantages and limitations of this approach are compared and contrasted with those of nasal packing and arterial ligation. We conclude that this new proce

Application of esca to semi-quantitative surface and state analysis of iron oxides.

In order to study oxidation states in the surface analysis of solids, a semi-quantitative ESCA (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy-XPS and X-ray-excited Auger-electron spectroscopy-XAES) method was proposed. Taking iron-oxygen compounds as examples, the summation or subtraction technique was utilized in the analysis of ESCA spectra to identify the co-ordination type and crystal structure. The "XAES intensity factors" for the lines Cr L(3)M(2,3)M(4,5), Ti L(3)M(2,3)M(4,5) and from Fe L(3)M(4,5)M(4,5) to Zn L(3)M(4,5)M(4,5) were estimated and their occurrence discussed.

Spontaneous Intracranial Hypotension and Spinal Epidural CSF Leaks: Diagnosis and Management.

Spontaneous intracranial hypotension from spinal cerebrospinal fluid leak is a condition that often presents as orthostatic headaches. Diagnosis and localisation of spinal CSF leaks remain difficult despite multiple imaging modalities that can be used to aid identification. These include traditional CT myelography and MRI as well as newer techniques such as dynamic and digital subtraction myelography. Leaks can be classified into types and optimal localisation and management techniques vary by type of leak. Localisation of a leak can aid in targeting treatment such as an epidural blood patch i

Anterior osteotomy for rigid cervical deformity correction.

Rigid deformities of the cervical spine can be associated with significant pain, disability, and impaired quality of life. Historical treatments generally utilized posterior approaches including the opening wedge osteotomy and pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO). Translation can occur during osteoclasis of the opening wedge osteotomy, making it inherently less stable than a PSO. The PSO is limited to lower cervical or upper thoracic levels due to the vertebral artery and sensitivity of cervical nerve roots to compression during osteotomy closure. The anterior osteotomy, defined as an osteotomy

Detecting early breast tumour by finite element thermal analysis.

Thermography has been proved to be an effective technique for indicating breast disease abnormalities or risks. However, the abnormalities might not express clearly due to various factors, such as when a small tumour is located in a deep region, or environmental influences that make breast disease difficult to find. This study aims to solve these problems for early detection of breast tumour. A three-dimensional breast model is presented to investigate the relationship between an embedded tumour and the surface temperature distribution. Then a subtraction technique is used to enhance the therm

Multiphasic MR imaging: a new method for direct imaging of pulsatile CSF flow.

A new technique is described that allows for the creation of pure pulsatile flow magnetic resonance (MR) images in a single acquisition. Five to 16 electrocardiographically gated images spanning the entire cardiac cycle are obtained with use of a gradient-echo pulse sequence. The section can be varied from 4 mm thick to full thickness projection. Taken singly, each image provides direct assessment of flow direction and velocity. Subtraction of image pairs eliminates signal detected from stationary protons, producing images of pulsatile flow. In this study the technique was used to image the fl

Area-Selective Atomic Layer Deposition Patterned by Electrohydrodynamic Jet Printing for Additive Manufacturing of Functional Materials and Devices.

There is an increasing interest in additive nanomanufacturing processes, which enable customizable patterning of functional materials and devices on a wide range of substrates. However, there are relatively few techniques with the ability to directly 3D print patterns of functional materials with sub-micron resolution. In this study, we demonstrate the use of additive electrohydrodynamic jet (e-jet) printing with an average line width of 312 nm, which acts as an inhibitor for area-selective atomic layer deposition (AS-ALD) of a range of metal oxides. We also demonstrate subtractive e-jet print

Femoral head vascularisation in Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease: comparison of dynamic gadolinium-enhanced subtraction MRI with bone scintigraphy.

BACKGROUND: It has been reported that MRI using a dynamic gadolinium-enhanced subtraction technique can allow the early identification of ischaemia and the pattern of revascularisation in Legg-Calvé-Perthes (LCP) disease with increased spatial and contrast resolution. Therefore, dynamic gadolinium-enhanced subtraction (DGS) MRI may be a possible non-ionising substitute for bone scintigraphy. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this prospective study was to compare DGS MRI and bone scintigraphy in the assessment of femoral head perfusion in LCP disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-six DGS MR images a

Spinal Cerebrospinal Fluid Leak Localization with Digital Subtraction Myelography: Tips, Tricks, and Pitfalls.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak can cause spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) which can lead to neurologic symptoms, such as orthostatic headache. Over time, imaging techniques for detecting and localizing CSF leaks have improved. These techniques include computed tomography (CT) myelography, dynamic CT myelography, cone-beam CT, MRI, MR myelography, and digital subtraction myelography (DSM). DSM provides the highest sensitivity for identifying leak sites and has comparable radiation exposure to CT myelography. The introduction of the lateral decubitus DSM has proven invaluable in locali

Univariate and multivariate signal processing spectrophotometric determination of an antihypertensive combination in line with the United Nations sustainable development goals.

Effective management of hypertension typically involves multiple medications. This underscores the pharmaceutical industry's demand for simple, cost-effective, and environmentally sustainable analytical methods capable of handling complex, multicomponent formulations. This study's primary goal was to compare and validate univariate and multivariate spectrophotometric techniques for analyzing fixed-dose antihypertensive formulations of Telmisartan (TEL), Chlorthalidone (CHT), and Amlodipine (AML). M2/M2 side-to-side rescue anastomosis for accidental M2 trunk occlusion during middle cerebral artery aneurysm clipping: technical note.

OBJECTIVE: A technically feasible and rapid technique for revascularizing the main branches of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) is described. This technique is applied mainly when clipping of an MCA aneurysm is complicated and occlusion of the origin of an MCA main branch results. METHODS: M2/M2 side-to-side anastomosis was applied in two patients in whom unplanned M2 occlusion occurred during the course of complicated MCA aneurysm clipping. The first patient underwent an emergency procedure after temporoparietal intracerebral hemorrhage. Unilateral mydriasis precluded preoperative angiograph

Cervicothoracic junction kyphosis: surgical reconstruction with pedicle subtraction osteotomy and Smith-Petersen osteotomy. Presented at the 2009 Joint Spine Section Meeting. Clinical article.

OBJECT: Sagittal plane deformities can be subdivided into kyphotic and lordotic forms and further characterized according to their global or regional (focal) presentation. Regional deformities of a significant magnitude constitute a gibbous deformity. Pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) and interlaminar Smith-Petersen osteotomies have been used to correct sagittal plane deformities in the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. By resecting a portion of the vertebral body and closing in the gap of this vertebra, the spine is placed in local lordosis and kyphosis is corrected. These osteotomies h

Evaluation of simulated external root resorptions with digital radiography and digital subtraction radiography.

INTRODUCTION: Root resorption can cause damage in orthodontic patients. Digital subtraction radiography (DSR) is a useful resource for the detection of mineral losses. The purpose of this study was to compare the efficacy of digital radiography (DR) and DSR in detecting simulated external root resorption. Examiner agreement between the 2 techniques was also evaluated. METHODS: Root resorptions of various sizes were simulated on the apical and lingual aspects of 49 teeth from 9 dry human mandibles. The teeth were radiographed in standardized conditions. The radiographs were registered with Reg

Real-time image guidance for open vascular neurosurgery using digital angiographic roadmapping.

OBJECTIVE: Angiographic roadmapping, commonly used for catheter navigation in endovascular procedures, is the superimposition of a live fluoroscopic image on a previously stored digitally subtracted angiogram. We evaluated this technique for the first time as a method for image-guided navigation during surgical resection of intracranial and spinal vascular lesions. METHODS: After obtaining Institutional Review Board approval, we retrospectively reviewed 38 procedures in 35 patients at two centers performed by one neurosurgeon in which intraoperative roadmapping was used as an image-guided nav

The role of posterior spinal osteotomies in pediatric spinal deformity surgery: indications and operative technique.

The primary goals of spinal deformity surgery are to prevent the progression of further deformity and to improve sagittal and coronal balance. Although increasingly powerful instrumentation has greatly facilitated these treatment goals, osteotomy of the spine is sometimes necessary to address more significant deformity. This review provides a detailed overview of posterior spinal osteotomies, which have gained increased attention as an adjunct to the treatment of complex pediatric spine deformity. The indications, operative technique, and advantages and disadvantages of the Smith-Petersen, ped

[Role of multidetectori compted tomography angiography and three-dimensional post-processing in a case of a Valsalva graft in aortic valve repair and replacement with the Cabrol procedure].

Patients with combined valvular-aortic disease undergo surgical reconstruction of the aortic root with a valved composite graft. Two of the techniques used to replace the aortic valve and ascending aorta are Bentall and Cabrol procedures. Cabrol surgical procedure uses a Dacron tube that enables coronary artery revascularization. Graft limb occlusion may however occur. Digital subtraction angiography, magnetic resonance angiography and multidetector computed tomography angiography are useful imaging methods for the evaluation of surgical-related complications. We report the case of a patient t

Lumbar pedicle subtraction osteotomy.

The correction of lumbar kyphotic deformities requires careful preoperative clinical and radiographic evaluation. For patients with rigid deformities at locations where previous anterior spinal surgery was performed, pedicle subtraction osteotomy remains an attractive treatment option. This technique uses a single-stage posterior approach for removal of the posterior elements and a wedge of the vertebral body. Using this method, it is possible to introduce up to 35 degrees of lumbar lordosis and add up to 10 cm of posterior trunk translation. Patient satisfaction from correction of these defor

Failing hemodialysis access grafts: evaluation of complete vascular tree with 3D contrast-enhanced MR angiography with high spatial resolution: initial results in 10 patients.

Ten patients with failing hemodialysis access underwent contrast material-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) angiography within 7 days before digital subtraction angiography (DSA). MR angiography was performed at 1.5 T by using a multistation multiinjection three-dimensional technique, and contrast material was injected via intravenous cannula. In all patients, MR angiographic images displayed the complete arterial inflow tract from the subclavian artery and access proper. The complete venous outflow tract up to the superior caval vein could be evaluated in all but one patient. DSA showed hemody
