BACKGROUND: Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) - reflux of stomach contents +/- bile into the oesophagus causing symptoms such as heartburn and acid reflux - is a common relapsing and remitting disease which often requires long-term maintenance therapy. Three infants with severe upper gastrointestinal hemorrhage with esophagogastroduodenoscopic (EGD) findings were reported. The underlying conditions of these infants included Down's syndrome, hypoplastic left heart, and diaphragmatic hernia. A series of substituted 2-pyridinecarbothioamides was synthesized and evaluated for gastric mucosal protectant activity in the rat. Out of this investigation N-(3,5-difluorophenyl)-2- pyridinecarbothioamide (23, AY-31,574) was identified. METHODS: A Canadian Paediatric Surveillance Program (CPSP) survey was sent to paediatricians and paediatric subspecialists. INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis VHProbi® YB11 (YB11) on attenuating sucralfate-induced constipation in BALB/c mice. The strain of YB11 exhibited favorable tolerance of simulated gastrointestinal (GI) juice. Only 0.42 Log value declined when the live cells of YB11 were co-incubated with simulated GI juice. In order to combat these side effects, patients often turn to alternative therapies, which often include antioxidants. Critically ill patients are at risk of developing stress ulcers in the upper digestive tract. Multiple risk factors have been associated with the development of this condition, with variable risk of association. Decades of research have suggested the benefit of using pharmacologic prophylaxis to reduce the incidence of clinically important upper gastrointestinal bleeding, with no reduction in overall mortality. Antacids should not be combined with other anti-ulcer drugs such as carbenoxolone, metoclopramide, domperidone, sulpiride, di-citrato-bis-muthate and alginic acid.
