Musculoskeletal disorders and discomfort for female surgeons or surgeons with small hand size when using hand-held surgical instruments: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs), also referred to as work-related musculoskeletal injuries (MSKIs), cause surgeons pain and discomfort. Implementing ergonomics in the operating room has helped reduce such symptoms. However, there are still many issues that surgeons face when dealing with medical instruments, especially among female surgeons or surgeons with smaller hands. METHODS: The Cochrane methodology for performing a systematic review was utilized to search five databases for pertinent literature based on the study question "Do female surgeons or surgeons with

Oocyte Cryopreservation Experiences and Attitudes Among Female Orthopaedic Surgeons.

BACKGROUND: Female surgeons more commonly delay childbearing and experience higher rates of infertility than women in the general population. More women are entering orthopaedic surgery but face unique challenges in family building. The accessibility of fertility preservation strategies among female orthopaedic surgeons remains underexplored. We aimed to investigate facilitators of and barriers to oocyte cryopreservation, especially during orthopaedic residency. METHODS: A survey regarding family planning and experiences surrounding oocyte cryopreservation was designed and distributed via res

Systemic Therapy for Melanoma: What Surgeons Need to Know.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors and targeted therapies (BRAF/MEK inhibitors) have transformed the care of patients with stage IV melanoma, now with 5-year overall survival rates around 50%. Surgeons should be acquainted with these drugs, the multidisciplinary considerations of their use, and the unique immune-related adverse events (irAEs) they can cause. In this review, we discuss systemic therapies for cutaneous melanoma, including the biology of immune checkpoint inhibition, treatment indications, and toxicities. We also explain how these irAEs and other toxicities can impact surgical planning

Minimally invasive subtotal cholecystectomy. What surgeons need to know.

Minimally invasive laparoscopic cholecystectomy is among the most frequently performed abdominal surgeries. Bile duct injury is a significative complication that occurs in about 0.2-0.3% of open procedures and 0.5% of laparoscopic surgeries, with concomitant vasculobiliary injuries in 12-61% of cases. Most of these lesions occurs during challenging severe cholecystitis where the intense inflammation obscures the hepatocystic anatomy. In this case a bailout strategy such as a subtotal cholecystectomy should be considered. Subtotal cholecystectomy is a surgical technique performed to remove a po

The joy of surgery: how gender influences surgeons' experiences.

INTRODUCTION: Burnout in medicine is an epidemic, and surgeons are not immune. Studies often focus on negative factors leading to burnout, with less emphasis on optimizing joy. The purpose of this study, conducted by the SAGES Reimagining the Practice of Surgery Task Force, was to explore how gender may influence surgeon well-being to better inform organizational change. METHODS: The study team developed a survey with the domains: facilitators of joy, support for best work, time for work tasks, barriers to joy, and what they would do with more time. The survey was emailed to 5777 addresses on

Providing a Safe Pregnancy Experience for Surgeons: A Review.

IMPORTANCE: Childbearing has been a particular barrier to successful recruitment and retention of women in surgery. Pregnant surgeons are more likely to have major pregnancy complications, such as preterm delivery, intrauterine growth restriction, infertility, and miscarriage, compared with nonsurgeons. The average obstetric complication rate for surgeons ranges between 25% and 82% in the literature and is considerably higher than that in the general US population at 5% to 15%. OBSERVATIONS: The risks that pregnant surgeons experience were individually analyzed. These risks included missed pr

Surgeons' views on hypospadias care journey: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Three major parties are involved in the hypospadias treatment journey - the patient, their parents/carers, and the surgeon. There is a strong trend towards involving all three, where possible, in deriving evidence around the care pathways. Currently, there are little data available on surgeons' perspectives of distal hypospadias care. AIM: This study explored the reflections of Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Paediatric hypospadias surgeons on the journey and experience of children born with distal hypospadias and their families, with the aim to improve this journey to achieve

Surgeons' personality, characteristics and presence of meaning in life.

BACKGROUND: Surgeons work long shifts and are frequently on call. Pressure to make quick and accurate decisions along with the responsibility of performing complex procedures contribute to surgeons' high stress-levels, anxiety and altered empathy level. We aimed to study surgeons' personality and meaning in life at two different centres. METHODS: General surgeons completed 47 questions. Visual analogous scale-items with controlled internal consistency (Cronbach alpha) coefficients varying from .77 to .85 were used from the following scales: Global Measure of Perceived Stress; Hostility Questi
