The impact of flushing with pre-filled saline syringes on the incidence of peripheral venous catheter failure: A quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Short peripheral venous catheters are one of the most frequently used devices in hospitals. Peripheral venous catheter failure, defined as the unscheduled dysfunction of peripheral venous catheter, is common and frequently entails a new invasive procedure. Flushing the catheter maintains patency and could prolong peripheral venous catheter dwell time. The introduction of pre-filled saline flushing syringes as compared to manually filled saline flushing syringes could facilitate the frequency of catheter flushing, and subsequently it could reduce peripheral venous catheter failure r

The Prison Economy of Needles and Syringes: What Opportunities Exist for Blood Borne Virus Risk Reduction When Prices Are so High?

AIM: A formal Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) is not provided in Australian prisons. Injecting equipment circulates in prisons as part of an informal and illegal economy. This paper examined how this economy generates blood-borne virus (BBV) risk and risk mitigation opportunities for inmates. METHOD: The HITS-p cohort recruited New South Wales inmates who had reported ever injecting drugs and who had a negative HCV serological test within 12 months prior to enrolment. For this study, qualitative interviews were conducted with 30 participants enrolled in HITS-p. Participants included 10 women

Multilevel community-based intervention to increase access to sterile syringes among injection drug users through pharmacy sales in New York City.

OBJECTIVES: Research has indicated that there is minimal use of pharmacies among injection drug users (IDUs) in specific neighborhoods and among Black and Hispanic IDUs. We developed a community-based participatory research partnership to determine whether a multilevel intervention would increase sterile syringe access through a new policy allowing nonprescription syringe sales in pharmacies. METHODS: We targeted Harlem, NY (using the South Bronx for comparison), and disseminated informational material at community forums, pharmacist training programs, and counseling or outreach programs for

A hybrid computational-analytical model for the prediction of stopper displacement in drug product prefilled syringe.

Controlling the displacement of the plunger stopper within prefilled syringes (PFS) during air transportation is critical to maintain the sterility of the drug prod product. The presented computational-analytical hybrid model predicts stopper displacement during transportation at elevated altitude by integrating multi-physics principles including Newton's second law of motion, the ideal gas law, solid mechanics and Monte Carlo Simulations The hybrid model comprises four key components: stopper displacement prediction, manufacturing metric prediction, sensitivity study of input parameters, and

Syringe-Assisted Arthroscopic Implantation of Particulated Juvenile Articular Cartilage for Trochlear Cartilage Defects.

Particulated juvenile articular cartilage (PJAC) allograft has emerged as a single-stage biologic option for treatment of focal full-thickness cartilage defects, including isolated trochlear lesions. Open techniques are most commonly described, and although a small number of arthroscopic techniques have been reported, precise placement of particulate graft material within the curved geometry of the trochlea remains technically challenging due to high local shear forces, limited working angles, and difficulty maintaining a dry arthroscopic field. We describe a fully arthroscopic technique for t

[Protective effect of ethyl syringate against ulcerative colitis based on JAK2/STAT3 pathway].

To study the therapeutic effect and mechanisms of ethyl syringate(MD) on ulcerative colitis(UC), the MTT assay was used to detect the proliferation inhibition of RAW264.7 cells and HT-29 cells by different concentrations of MD(50, 100, 200, 400 μmol·L~(-1)). UC cell models were constructed by inducing RAW264.7 cells and HT-29 cells with lipopolysaccharide(LPS) and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α). An animal model was established by inducing mice with 2.5% dextran sulfate sodium(DSS) to verify the therapeutic effect of MD on UC. A control group, a model group(LPS or TNF-α), and groups treated wit

ASAP: A pharmacy-level intervention to increase nonprescription syringe sales to reduce bloodborne illnesses.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacy syringe sales are effective structural interventions to reduce bloodborne illnesses in populations, and are legal in all but two states. Yet evidence indicates reduced syringe sales in recent years. This study was designed as a feasibility test of an intervention to promote syringe sales by pharmacies in Arizona. METHODS: A four-month pilot among three Arizona pharmacies measured feasibility and acceptability through monthly surveys to 18 enrolled pharmacy staff members. RESULTS: Pharmacy staff reported increased ease of dispensing syringes across the study. Rankings of

Open-source spring-driven syringe pump with 3D-printed components for microfluidic applications.

The operation of microfluidic devices requires precise and constant fluid flow. Microfluidic systems in low-resource settings require a portable, inexpensive, and electricity-free pumping approach due to the rising demand for microfluidics in point-of-care testing (POCT). Open-source alternatives, employing 3D printing and motors, offer affordability. However, using motors require electrical power, which often relies on external sources, hindering the on-site use of open-source pumps. This study introduces a spring-driven, 3D-printed syringe pump, eliminating the need for an external power sou

Investigation of the effects of syringic acid supplemented to Tris semen diluent on ram semen freezability.

To the best of our knowledge, no research has been conducted to test the effects of syringic acid (SA) on ram semen freezing within the scope of natural antioxidants added to semen extenders. Therefore, this study had two main objectives. First, to test whether adding SA to ram semen freezing extender has a protective effect and contributes positively to sperm kinetic, plasma and acrosome integrity, mitochondrial membrane potential, lipid peroxidation, oxidant and antioxidant and DNA damage parameters after thawing. Second, it was to determine at what concentration the SA supplemented to the e

More evidence or stronger political will: exploring the feasibility of needle and syringe programs in Ukrainian prisons.

INTRODUCTION: In 2007, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommended for prison authorities to introduce prison needle and syringe programs (PNSP) if they have any evidence that injecting drug use is taking place in prisons. This article presents descriptive evidence that injecting drug use takes place in Ukrainian prisons, it discusses how (denial of) access to injection equipment is regulated in the current system and what changes should be considered in order to implement PNSP. BACKGROUND: Ukrainian prisons still live by the laws and policies adopted in the Soviet Union. Besides laws and

Reduction in injection risk behaviors after implementation of a syringe services program, Miami, Florida.

INTRODUCTION: Syringe services programs (SSPs) are evidence-based HIV prevention programs for people who inject drugs. However, not all SSPs operate evidence-based syringe distribution models, such as needs-based distribution. This study aims to provide preliminary evidence from the IDEA SSP on changes in injection risk behaviors over time, and to examine factors, including syringe coverage, associated with injection risk behavior trajectories over time under a one-for-one syringe distribution model. METHODS: We used a prospective observational study design to generate a cohort of SSP clients
