Primary insertion of inert material into an open wound to expedite joint and tendon reconstruction can be safely accomplished if the wound is thoroughly debrided and the material is covered with a well-vascularized flap. In this case, metacarpophalangeal mobility and extensor tendon function were largely preserved by early insertion of silicone spacers and rods in the reconstruction of a severe degloving injury to the dorsum of the hand.

BACKGROUND: A longer Achilles tendon (AT) moment arm (MA) relative to the foot length requires less muscle force for a given plantarflexion moment, thereby lowering mechanical load on the tendon. We examined whether the AT and foot MA lengths in healthy (N = 28) differ from height and body mass matched individuals with AT tendinopathy (N = 28) and rupture (N = 29). We hypothesized that a longer AT MA has a protective effect on tendon loading with the patient groups having smaller MA compared to asymptomatic individuals.
METHODS: MAs were assessed using 2-D image-based method. AT MA was define

INTRODUCTION: Bilateral patellar tendon injuries are rare, with few case reports in the current literature. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first instance of reported bilateral patellar tendon injury with concomitant syndesmotic injury.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old African American male presented for evaluation of bilateral knee pain and ankle pain with inability to bear weight after an injury during a recreational football game. He was diagnosed with bilateral patellar tendon ruptures and a right-sided syndesmotic ankle injury resulting in mortise instability. He was taken for fluorosco

BACKGROUND: Anabolic steroid use at supraphysiologic doses has been associated with an increased risk of tendon injury. However, the musculoskeletal effects of testosterone therapy in the clinical setting are not well understood.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Is prescription testosterone associated with a higher odds of subsequent quadriceps muscle or tendon injury? (2) Is prescription testosterone associated with a higher odds of surgical repair of the quadriceps tendon?
METHODS: The PearlDiver Database, which contains data on Medicaid, Medicare, and commercially insured patients, allows for a la

Injuries to canine athletes are becoming more and more frequent, and perfect knowledge of all injury-prone anatomic structures is mandatory to achieve correct diagnoses and treatments. In this small case series discussion, trauma-based injury to the common digital extensor tendon of digits III and IV of the forelimb is described for the first time. The anatomy as well as the clinical and ultrasonographic findings show similarities to the human spectrum of pathologies called boxer's knuckle. The treatment options with a buddy taping technique led to a satisfactory outcome at three months from t

INTRODUCTION: Peroneal tendon injury is one of the pathological ankle conditions which causes pain and is frequently misdiagnosed as ankle sprain. There is a variety of peroneal tendon injuries, depending on the mechanism of injury. We report a series of three peroneal injuries in our institution.
CASE PRESENTATION: All three of the patients presented with ankle pain and instability following injuries. There was a presence of peroneus quartus in one of the patients. Retromalleolar pain was revealed in all of the patients, in addition to instability. All of the three patients received open per

Common peroneal nerve dysfunction after a multiligament knee injury can be devastating. In patients with persistent foot drop, posterior tibial tendon transfer to the dorsum of the foot is a reliable and safe procedure to restore dorsiflexion. These authors favor passing the posterior tibial tendon through the interosseous membrane and docking it into the lateral/middle cuneiforms. A Strayer procedure or tendo-Achilles lengthening must be performed in patients unable to achieve at least 10° of passive dorsiflexion. Despite the operative limb having 30% to 40% of ankle dorsiflexion strength of

BACKGROUND: Overuse injuries are multifactorial resulting from cumulative loading. Therefore, clear differences between normal and at-risk individuals may not be present for individual risk factors. Using a holistic measure that incorporates many of the identified risk factors, focusing on multiple joint movement patterns may give better insight into overuse injuries. Lower body stiffness may provide such a measure.
OBJECTIVE: To identify how risk factors for Achilles tendon injuries influence measures of lower body stiffness.
METHODS: SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, CINAHL and PubMed were sear

OBJECTIVE: The purposes of this study were to measure the average distance from a percutaneous pin in each quadrant of the distal fibula to the sural nerve and nearest peroneal tendon, and define the safe zone for percutaneous pin placement as would be used during surgery.
METHOD: Ten fresh-frozen cadavers underwent percutaneous pin fixation into four quadrants of the distal fibula. The sural nerve and peroneal tendon were identified as they coursed around the lateral ankle. Distances from the K-wire in each quadrant to the anatomic structure of interest were measured.
RESULTS: Average dista

Many of the principles of flexor tendon repair and rehabilitation can be applied to zones III-V. Injuries in zones III-V are rarely isolated and neurovascular involvement is common. Because of the often extensive and unknown degree of injury, there should be a low threshold for surgical wound exploration. Primary repair of injured tendons and neurovascular structures is recommended by way of a systematic approach. Good to excellent outcomes in range of motion and tendon function can be expected; however, functional outcomes of associated nerve injuries are varied, with younger patients general

This dynamic splint lessens resistance to finger extension and increases the arc of motion through full passive flexion of the injured fingers. Rubber bands run from the tips of the injured fingers under a spring-loaded roller bar at the metacarpophalangeal joint level to a coiled lever at the distal flexor surface of the forearm. The wrist is positioned in 45 degrees of flexion with 40 degrees to full flexion of the metacarpophalangeal joints and full flexion to full extension of the interphalangeal joints. We retrospectively compared patients treated in the new and traditional splints. Patie

Injury to the peroneal tendons is one of the major long-term complications of intraarticular calcaneal fractures and heretofore has been difficult to diagnose by noninvasive radiography. Retrospective review of CT scans of 24 intraarticular calcaneal fractures, obtained shortly after injury, identified 22 cases (92%) of acute peroneal tendon abnormalities. In most of these cases, multiple findings were present. These included lateral displacement in 14 (58%) of 24, impingement by bony fragments in eight (33%), subluxation or dislocation in six (25%), soft-tissue masses around the tendons repre

Background/Objectives: Tendon and ligament injuries are challenging conditions because of limited vascularization, slow collagen turnover, and prolonged rehabilitation timelines. This narrative review aimed to synthesize current evidence on nutritional strategies that may support connective tissue rehabilitation and return-to-activity or return-to-sport progression. Methods: This narrative review synthesized the relevant clinical, mechanistic, and applied sports nutrition literature identified through targeted database searches and manual reference screening. Results: Adequate energy availabil

Compared to ruptures of the Achilles tendon, injuries to the tibialis anterior and tibialis posterior tendons or the peroneal tendons are relatively rare, so that the literature on this subject largely consists of individual case reports and small case series. There are major differences between the individual entities in terms of the pathogenesis, possible sequelae and treatment recommendations. This article is intended to provide an overview and instruction manual for the clinical management.

Objective: With the remarkable advances in diagnostic ultrasound equipment, there is a growing need for ultrasound diagnosis of muscle and soft tissue injuries in sports injuries. Among these, hamstring strains are often difficult to treat and require early and accurate diagnosis. Injuries to the proximal part of the hamstring often take a long time to heal. For this reason, the diagnosis of proximal hamstring injuries is extremely important. The structure of the origin tendon is characteristic, and it is a complex in which the semitendinosus muscle (ST) of the medial hamstring and the long he
