Attempts were made to examine the effect of paralytic shellfish poisoning toxins (PSP) on hepatic xenobiotic-metabolizing enzymes (XMEs) of tiger puffer (Takifugu rubripes). Two groups of nontoxic tiger fish were analyzed, and one group was fed with a PSP-containing diet (PSP group), and another with a PSP-free diet (control group). After 60 days of feeding, they were compared to each other mainly in terms of the activity of XMEs. Both groups did not differ from each other significantly in body weight gain, hepatosomatic index, and condition factor Hepatic level of cytochrome P450 was lower in

Pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration (PKAN) is an autosomal recessive neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation disorder that usually begins in childhood or adolescence; very late adult presentation can resemble more common atypical parkinsonian syndromes. We report a 54-year-old woman whose neurologic symptoms began insidiously at approximately 47 years of age with gait and balance impairment, retropulsive falls, micrographia, and dysarthria. Dysphagia, choking on liquids, urinary incontinence, and loss of independence evolved later. She had been labeled as having progressive

BACKGROUND: Dengue is not endemic in Australia and outbreaks occur occasionally after viraemic travellers visit parts of Queensland where dengue vectors are prevalent. Prior to 2016, Aedes aegypti was the primary vector of dengue in Australia. However, several dengue outbreaks have occurred more recently on islands in the Torres Strait region where Ae. aegypti has been displaced by Aedes albopictus following its first detection in the islands in 2005.
METHODS: In November 2024, adult female Ae. albopictus were collected during a dengue outbreak on Masig Island where Ae. aegypti is now absent

Mechanisms facilitating the coexistence of ecologically similar species remain a fundamental question in ecology. Here, we investigate niche partitioning among coexisting Therates tiger beetles by examining morphological differentiation, temporal activity, altitude distribution, and foraging substrate preferences. Across 40 sites, we analyzed 1065 specimens from six taxa, measuring body size and mandible length. Among these, 18 sites had coexisting species, while 22 had a single species. In total, four pairs of co-occurring semi-arboreal Therates species were noted. In 13 of the coexistence si

BACKGROUND: Trans-radial coronary angiogram (TR-CAG) has gained popularity due to lower complication rates compared to transfemoral access. Operators can use either conventional catheters, such as Judkins, or single dedicated catheters, such as Tiger-II. This meta-analysis compared the safety and efficacy of Tiger-II versus Judkins catheters in TR-CAG.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane Library through February 2024 for studies comparing Tiger-II and Judkins catheters in TR-CAG. Fixed- and random-effect models pooled estimates of odds ratios (ORs) and standardis

Dioxins and dioxin-like compounds (DLCs) exert toxicity through the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR), but species variations in AHR lead to differing sensitivities. Investigating the variation in AHR homolog diversity, expression levels, predominant forms, and AHR sensitivity across species-particularly in fish sensitive to dioxins-is essential for enhancing ecological risk assessment. This study focuses on the tiger puffer (Takifugu rubripes), identifying five AHRs and two ARNTs, with truAHR2a showing the highest expression and the truAHR1 subfamily displaying lower levels. All truAHRs are fun

The Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus is currently spreading across Europe, facilitated by climate change and global transportation. It is a vector of arboviruses causing human diseases such as chikungunya, dengue hemorrhagic fever and Zika fever. For the majority of these diseases, no vaccines or therapeutics are available. Options for the control of Ae. albopictus are limited by European regulations introduced to protect biodiversity by restricting or phasing out the use of pesticides, genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or products of genome editing. Alternative solutions are thus urg

Aedes aegypti (Linnaeus) and Aedes albopictus (Skuse) are worldwide vectors of dengue and yellow fever viruses. These species coexist in many countries and the biotic interactions between them can influence their abundances and distributions. In Argentina, Ae. aegypti is widely distributed in the north and center regions of the country, with temperate and subtropical climate, while both are sympatric only in the northeastern area of the subtropical region. Interspecific and intraspecific larval competition for food was evaluated to assess if their interaction influences on patterns of abundanc

Tigers (Panthera tigris spp.) are endangered in the wild; ensuring sustainable insurance populations requires careful planning within zoological collections. In captive situations, contraceptives are often used to control breeding and ensure genetically viable populations that contain manageable numbers of animals; reversible contraceptives are ideal because they offer flexibility for breeding management. Historically, synthetic progestins, such as melengestrol acetate implants, were used in female tigers, but these are associated with an increased risk of reproductive pathology and subsequent

Although artificial insemination has been used for decades in Penaeus monodon aquaculture, the interaction of male and female external genitalia during spermatophore transfer has not been fully documented. As a result, studying the functional anatomy of this process may help to better refine the insemination technique. The sexual act in penaeoid prawns is virtually impossible to observe directly; as a result, this study aimed to describe the functional anatomy and interaction of external genitalia, such as the petasma, appendices masculinae and genital papillae of the male, with that of the th

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is an invasive mosquito species of global medical concern as its distribution has recently expanded to Africa, the Americas and Europe. In the absence of prophylaxis protecting human populations from emerging arboviruses transmitted by this mosquito species, the most straightforward control measures rely on the suppression or manipulation of vector natural populations. A number of environmental-friendly methods using mass releases of sterilizing males are currently under development. However, these strategies are still lacking an efficient sexing method required fo

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus is an invasive species which continues expanding its geographic range and involvement in mosquito-borne diseases such as chikungunya and dengue. Host selection patterns by invasive mosquitoes are critically important because they increase endemic disease transmission and drive outbreaks of exotic pathogens. Traditionally, Ae. albopictus has been characterized as an opportunistic feeder, primarily feeding on mammalian hosts but occasionally acquiring blood from avian sources as well. However, limited information is available on their feeding patterns in temperate re

The polymorphism of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II classical genes is closely related to pathogen resistance, among which the second exon of the DRB gene has the highest variability. In this study, we analyzed exon 2 of the MHC class II DRB gene in 32 captive Amur tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) using a cloning-based sequencing approach to assess genetic diversity and its association with infection by Enterocytozoon bieneusi. A total of 16 DRB alleles were identified, including six novel variants. One allele (Pati-DRB*02) showed a significant positive association with infecti

Cigarette smoke contains many harmful components that can damage the blood-testis barrier, cause changes in testicular tissue structure, and directly or indirectly affect sperm production. Tiger nut (Cyperus esculentus L.) is an underground tuber of a perennial herbaceous plant, and its extract has been shown to have antioxidant properties and the potential to improve male reproductive function. In view of the above, this experiment was designed to investigate the fatty acid composition of tiger nut oil and its protective effect as a daily dietary supplement against cigarette smoke-induced rep

Here, an ultralow Pt (∼2 wt%) catalyst, honeycomb NC-supported PtFe&Fe3C (PtFe&Fe3C/HNC), is prepared for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This catalyst contains three advantages: (1) a large number of mesopores in HNC is beneficial for the exposure of active sites and rapid diffusion of O2; (2) the introduction of Fe into PtFe alloy can effectively alter the electronic structure of Pt, weaken the oxygen binding energy between Pt and reaction intermediates to enhance the intrinsic activity of Pt; (3) Fe3C not only further regulate the electronic structure of Pt by transferring electrons to Pt,

BACKGROUND: The original version of the Tenodesis-Induced-Grip Exoskeleton Robot (TIGER) significantly improved the motor and functional performance of the affected upper extremity of chronic stroke patients. The assist-as-needed (AAN) technique in robot-involved therapy is widely favored for promoting patient active involvement, thereby fostering motor recovery. However, the TIGER lacked an AAN control strategy, which limited its use in different clinical applications. The present study aimed to develop and analyze the training effects of an AAN control mode to be integrated into the TIGER, t

BACKGROUND: Understanding pest incursion pathways is critical for preventing new invasions and for stopping the transfer of alleles that reduce the efficacy of local control methods. The mosquitoes Aedes albopictus (Skuse) and Ae. aegypti (Linnaeus) are both highly invasive disease vectors, and through a series of ongoing international incursions are continuing to colonize new regions and spread insecticide resistance alleles among established populations. This study uses high-resolution molecular markers and a set of 241 reference genotypes to trace incursion pathways of Ae. albopictus into m

The aim of this investigation is to describe the potential contributing nutritional factors involved in the development of ophthalmic and dermatologic changes in four Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris spp tigris) cubs fed an artificial milk formula. The affected animals were compared with two other tiger cubs that had been nursed by their dam naturally. After the first clinical signs appeared, the tiger cubs underwent ophthalmic evaluation. Severe symmetric generalized alopecia over the trunk, sparing the head and distal portion of the front and rear limbs, bilateral cataracts and strabismus were
