The incidence of mycoses is high in Madras accounting for over 13% of dermatoses diagnosed in a three-year period. Dermatophytoses (tinea corporis and tinea cruris) and pityriasis versicolor were most common in May and October. A correlation was observed between these infections and environmental temperature, humidity and rainfall. Most cases of all dermatophytoses except tinea capitis were recorded between 10 and 30 years of age but the latter was most common between one and 10 years. Males were predominantly affected with all except tinea axillaris, candidiasis and piedra. The incidence of p

Ringworm of the scalp (Tinea Capitis), a fungal skin ailment that appears on the scalp, was treated until the early sixties by radiation therapy. It was discovered during the seventies that radiation treatment for ringworm may be associated with a higher risk of cancerous and benign tumors in the head and neck area for patients undergoing treatment. In 1995, Israel enacted a law to compensate ringworm irradiation patients which provided monetary compensation for those who were treated between 1946 and 1960. "The Ringworm Affair" focuses on the issue of radiation treatment for ringworm and the

Dermatophytic infections of the skin, hairs and nails are very common and are very variable in aspect. In skin, inflammatory symptoms are often absent, but in other cases they may be very pronounced, in particular when caused by zoophilic dermatophytes. In onychomycosis, it is very difficult to make the differential diagnosis with other causes of onychodystrophy on purely clinical grounds; indeed, even in case of fungal infection, the causative agent can be suspected on clinical grounds only in a minority of cases. The clinical presentation of skin infections, infections of the scalp and beard

Prior to 1982, no reliable information was available on prevailing dermatophyte species or infections in Iceland. In 1983-1984 fungal cultures performed on 96 patients revealed that Trichophyton tonsurans was the most common isolate, followed by Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum. There were no cases of tinea capitis and tinea corporis was rare, but the most common sites of infection were the feet and toenails.

Five hundred fifty-six children constituted 39.5% of total smear- and culture-positive cases of dermatophytosis and 0.6% of the total new dermatology outpatients seen over a period of five years. Males outnumbered females. The youngest child was a 20-day-old neonate (age range 20 days-12 yrs) with a peak of fungal infections seen in patients between 4 and 6 years of age. Microsporum canis was the most prevalent (70.5%) species, followed by Trichophyton violaceum, Microsporum audouinii, Trichophyton rubrum, and Epidermophyton floccosum. Rarely, other species were also isolated. Tinea capitis wa

Approximately 200 patients with clinically and mycologically diagnosed dermatophytoses were treated with itraconazole. The drug was administered at a dose of 100 mg with the main meal. Therapy duration was as follows: tinea corporis and tinea cruris, 14 days; tinea pedis and tinea manuum, 28 days; tinea unguium of hands, three months, and feet, six months; tinea capitis, 30 days. Clinical and mycological control tests (eg, direct microscopy and culture) were performed prior to treatment, at the end of treatment and two and four weeks after the end of treatment. Blood chemistry parameters were

Trichophyton tonsurans is an anthropophilic dermatophyte that is predominantly responsible in man for tinea capitis. Although this fungus has a world-wide distribution, most reports of the occurrence of Trichophyton tonsurans infections originate from the USA, Latin America and some European countries. A 31-year-old African woman, formerly a resident of Zaire, with tinea corporis caused by Trichophyton tonsurans infection is described here.

Treatment of dermatophyte infections is based on the clinical picture and mycological detection of the causative pathogen. Based on the appropriate indication, onychomycosis can be treated topically using an antimycotic nail lacquer. Atraumatic nail abrasion with 40 % urea ointment has a beneficial effect on healing. Continuous treatment of onychomycosis with terbinafine represents the most effective systemic therapy. Terbinafine or itraconazole are the safest and most effective antimycotic agents for the treatment of onychomycosis in children. For laser therapy of onychomycosis, only a few st

Tinea auricularis is a rare superficial fungal infection, which is easily ignored in clinic due to its atypical clinical symptoms or being accompanied with tinea capitis. In this study, a case of annular erythema with scales around the ear canal orifice was reported. After fungal culture and identification, the patient was diagnosed with Trichophyton rubrum infection, and was cured after 3 weeks of topical use of clotrimazole cream.

The present study deals with a case of a 40-day-old girl with kerion Celsi caused by Microsporum canis. The source of the infection were the parents who presented tinea corporis caused by M. canis. Systemic treatment was carried out with terbinafine and complete recovery was achieved. Tinea capitis is unusual in children during their first year of life and its evolution towards kerion is very rare in newborns.

Dermatophytes are keratinophilic fungi that infect keratinized tissues causing diseases known as dermatophytoses. Dermatophytes are classified in three genera, Epidermophyton, Microsporum, and Trichophyton. This investigation was performed to study the prevalence of dermatomycosis among 640 patients being evaluated at the dermatology clinics at Kasr elainy, El-Husein and Said Galal hospitals in Cairo and Giza between January 2005 and December 2006. The patients were checked for various diseases. Tinea capitis was the most common clinical disease followed by tinea pedis and tinea corporis. Tine

The estimated lifetime risk of acquiring a dermatophyte infection is between 10 and 20 percent. Recognition and appropriate treatment of these infections reduces both morbidity and discomfort and lessens the possibility of transmission. Dermatophyte infections are classified according to the affected body site, such as tinea capitis (scalp), tinea barbae (beard area), tinea corporis (skin other than bearded area, scalp, groin, hands or feet), tinea cruris (groin, perineum and perineal areas), tinea pedis (feet), tinea manuum (hands) and tinea unguium (nails). We report two cases of tinea corporis purpurica of the legs, presumably caused by self-inoculation of the mycete from the toenails, in two elderly women (80 and 78 years). Trichophyton violaceum was isolated from the skin and nails. Histological examination of a biopsy specimen from the leg lesions confirmed the diagnosis. The source of infection was an Ethiopian carer who had tinea capitis in the first case, and was undiagnosed in the second patient. Cases of purpuric variants of tinea corporis are rare and this is the first report of probable self-inoculation of T. violaceum from onychomycos

In this study the prevalence and causative agents of dermatophytoses in Isfahan, a large province of Iran, were determined. Of 16,578 clinically suspected cases 13.3% were affected with dermatophytoses. Lesions of tinea capitis were the most prevalent clinical type of dermatophytoses (54.1%), followed by tinea corporis (23.8%) and tinea pedis (8.9%). Trichophyton verrucosum was the most frequent causative agent (32.8%), followed by Epidermophyton floccosum (17.6%), T. mentagrophytes (16.2%) and Microsporum canis (12.3%). We found a relationship between the spread of dermatophytoses and live-st
