Scaffolds can be introduced as a source of tissue in reconstructive surgery and can help to improve wound healing. Amniotic membranes (AMs) as scaffolds for tissue engineering have emerged as promising biomaterials for surgical reconstruction due to their regenerative capacity, biocompatibility, gradual degradability, and availability. They also promote fetal-like scarless healing and provide a bioactive matrix that stimulates cell adhesion, migration, and proliferation. The aim of this study was to create a tissue-engineered AM-based implant for the repair of vesicovaginal fistula (VVF), a de

Thin membranous tissues (TMTs) are anatomical structures consisting of multiple stratified cell layers, each less than 100 μm in thickness. While these tissues are small in scale, they play critical roles in normal tissue function and healing. Examples of TMTs include the tympanic membrane, cornea, periosteum, and epidermis. Damage to these structures can be caused by trauma or congenital disabilities, resulting in hearing loss, blindness, dysfunctional bone development, and impaired wound repair, respectively. While autologous and allogeneic tissue sources for these membranes exist, they are

Heart disease is one of the largest burdens to human health worldwide and has very limited therapeutic options. Engineered three-dimensional (3D) vascularized cardiac tissues have shown promise in rescuing cardiac function in diseased hearts and may serve as a whole organ replacement in the future. One of the major obstacles in reconstructing these thick myocardial tissues to a clinically applicable scale is the integration of functional vascular networks capable of providing oxygen and nutrients throughout whole engineered constructs. Without perfusion of oxygen and nutrient flow throughout t

BACKGROUND: Loss of the dental and paradental tissues resulting from trauma, caries or from systemic diseases considered as one of the most significant and frequent clinical problem to the healthcare professionals. Great attempts have been implemented to recreate functionally, healthy dental and paradental tissues in order to substitute dead and diseased tissues resulting from secondary trauma of car accidents, congenital malformations of cleft lip and palate or due to acquired diseases such as cancer and periodontal involvements.
METHOD: An extensive literature search has been done on PubMed

Engineered conduction tissues (ECTs) are cardiac conduction tissues fabricated in vitro to allow for more precisely targeted in vivo transplantation therapy. The transplantation of ECTs may be ideal for the treatment of atrioventricular conduction block and could have a significant impact on the future application of biological pacemakers. However, there is little published information regarding the conduction function of ECTs in vivo. In the present study, ECTs were constructed by seeding cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) into a collagen sponge and were then transplanted into animal hearts to d

Laboratory studies of the heart use cell and tissue cultures to dissect heart function yet rely on animal models to measure pressure and volume dynamics. Here, we report tissue-engineered scale models of the human left ventricle, made of nanofibrous scaffolds that promote native-like anisotropic myocardial tissue genesis and chamber-level contractile function. Incorporating neonatal rat ventricular myocytes or cardiomyocytes derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells, the tissue-engineered ventricles have a diastolic chamber volume of ~500 µl (comparable to that of the native rat ventri

Scientists are always looking for new tools to better mimic human anatomy and physiology, especially to study chronic respiratory disease. Airway remodelling is a predominant feature in asthma and occurs in conjunction with chronic airway inflammation. Both the inflammatory and repair processes alter the airway wall which is marked by anatomical, physiological and functional changes. A tissue-engineered model of bronchiole remodelling presents a novel approach to investigating the initiation and progression of airway remodelling. By developing a unique bioreactor system, cylindrical-shaped bro

CONCLUSION: This new regenerative therapy shows great potential for the treatment of stenosis of the trachea and/or cricoids (STC).
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the potential of tissue-engineered artificial trachea (AT) for treatment of STC in clinical applications. We previously reported that AT was a useful material for implantation into a tracheal defect after resection of cancer. There are many causes of stenosis of the respiratory tract and STC is particularly difficult to treat.
METHODS: The AT was a spiral stent composed of Marlex mesh made of polypropylene and covered with collagen sponge

The surgical treatment of severe hypospadias can be very challenging. In selected cases with severe lack of tissue, cultured autologous urothelial cells can be used to create a transplanted neourethra. The algorithm for using tissue-engineering techniques for the surgical repair of the male urethra includes 3 main steps. First, the autologous urothelial cells are harvested from the patient, e.g. by bladder washing through a catheter with sterile saline. Second, the cells are propagated and expanded in the laboratory environment. Finally, the cells are transplanted back to the patient in the fi

Hepatocyte transplantation on implantable devices is a tissue engineering approach to improve the treatment of liver disease and the efficacy of ex vivo gene therapy. Diverse physiological functions and high metabolic activity of the liver represent significant challenges to engineering implantable devices that provide long-term hepatic support. Liver tissue engineering research has explored alternatives to direct hepatocyte injection that include hepatocyte attachment to microcarriers, encapsulation and transplantation on biodegradable polymer scaffolds. Successful function of hepatocytes tra

Spinal cord injury (SCI), which is a severe complication of spinal fractures, often causes the dysfunction of the spinal cord and results in sensory and motor abnormalities. Current clinical treatments-including medication, decompression surgery, and bed rest-remain insufficient for complete functional recovery. It is necessary to reduce the early inflammatory reactions, rebuild the connections of neurons, and reduce the formation of the glial scar in order to restore spinal cord function. With the development of biomaterials discipline, hydrogel tissue engineering has become an effective and

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) via autologous vein or artery is still the gold standard surgery operative revascularization. However autologous vein/artery may represent some limitations like varicose veins or unavailability of veins due to reoperations especially in older patients. consequently, the research focus directed towards identification and characterization of biocompatible alternative material. Bacterial nanocellulose (BNC) as a natural material has gained substantial recognition in the research field of tissue engineering due to it exceptional attributes, including biocompa

Finding the ideal biomaterial with all required properties to replace specific tissues is an unmet challenge. In this study, twin-layered fibers with two well-established medical biomaterials, PHAs and PLA, have been produced via pressurized gyration and characterized thoroughly for surface properties, mechanical properties, and in vitro cell responses using a range of cell types for both hard and soft tissue engineering. The diameters of fibers produced ranged from 0.9 to 1.2 μm. The PHA sheath fibers increased cell attachment of live viable cells compared to PLA sheath fibers, due to their r

Hydrogels are widely used in tissue engineering (TE) for their ability to replicate the extracellular matrix, providing a supportive environment for cell proliferation and tissue regeneration. However, their inherently low mechanical strength often restricts their use in load-bearing biomedical applications. To address these limitations, this study aimed to develop the first human-derived double-network (DN) hydrogel by combining human methacryloyl platelet lysates (hPLMA) and the natural polysaccharide chitosan (CHT) through sequential covalent and ionic crosslinking. The resulting DN hydroge

Bone related problems due to numerous reasons are global concerns and increasing recently. Although bone tissues have an ability to regenerate, they cannot completely heal without external intervention when severe defects occur. It is required to develop new biomaterials, termed scaffolds, that can support and induce bone tissue regeneration. A biomaterial scaffold for bone repair possesses the requirements of non-toxicity, biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and non-immunogenicity. Among natural osteogenic compounds, tamarind seed polysaccharide (TSP) is a desirable agent for fabrication of

Simulation of the dynamic electromechanical microenvironment is of great significance in tissue engineering, especially in the regeneration of those electrically responsive tissues, such as nerves, heart and bone. In recent years, electroactive nanomaterials (ENMs) have shown great potentials in tissue engineering due to their intrinsic conductivity, piezoelectricity and redox activity, which can regulate cell functions in a controlled manner. Reports regarding the use of ENMs for tissue engineering have been well documented in the past few years, and it is time to conduct the systematic summa

Myocardial infarction (MI) remains a leading cause of cardiovascular mortality, driven by irreversible cardiomyocyte loss and the limited regenerative capacity of the adult heart. Conventional pharmacological and interventional therapies reduce acute injury yet rarely restore functional myocardium, motivating bioengineering strategies to enhance repair. This review synthesizes recent preclinical advances in biomaterial-based cardiac tissue engineering, with an emphasis on engineered cardiac patches and injectable hydrogels evaluated in vivo, alongside early human translation where available.
