Optical coherence tomography for diagnosing skin cancer in adults.

BACKGROUND: Early accurate detection of all skin cancer types is essential to guide appropriate management and to improve morbidity and survival. Melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) are high-risk skin cancers, which have the potential to metastasise and ultimately lead to death, whereas basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is usually localised, with potential to infiltrate and damage surrounding tissue. Anxiety around missing early cases needs to be balanced against inappropriate referral and unnecessary excision of benign lesions. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a microscopic imaging techn

Optical coherence tomography findings in patients with bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Research in bipolar disorder suggests the presence of structural brain abnormalities. It is not clear whether these findings are trait markers or operate with the onset and progress with disease severity and duration. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive technique that detects degenerative changes in the retina reflecting brain degeneration. This study aimed at detecting these changes and relating them to disease severity and clinical characteristics. METHODS: A case-control study conducted in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine hospital, Faculty of Medicine at Cairo

Green disease in optical coherence tomography diagnosis of glaucoma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become an integral component of modern glaucoma practice. Utilizing color codes, OCT analysis has rendered glaucoma diagnosis and follow-up simpler and faster for the busy clinician. However, green labeling of OCT parameters suggesting normal values may confer a false sense of security, potentially leading to missed diagnoses of glaucoma and/or glaucoma progression. RECENT FINDINGS: Conditions in which OCT color coding may be falsely negative (i.e., green disease) are identified. Early glaucoma in which retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL)

Astigmatism corrected common path probe for optical coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) catheters for intraluminal imaging are subject to various artifacts due to reference-sample arm dispersion imbalances and sample arm beam astigmatism. The goal of this work was to develop a probe that minimizes such artifacts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Our probe was fabricated using a single mode fiber at the tip of which a glass spacer and graded index objective lens were spliced to achieve the desired focal distance. The signal was reflected using a curved reflector to correct for astigmatism caused by the thin, protective, transpar

Optical Coherence Tomography to Assess Neurodegeneration in Multiple Sclerosis.

Retinal spectral domain optical coherence tomography (OCT) has emerged as a clinical and research tool in multiple sclerosis (MS) and optic neuritis (ON). This chapter summarizes a short OCT protocol as included in international consensus guidelines. The protocol was written for hands-on style such that both clinicians and OCT technicians can make use of it. The protocol is suitable for imaging of the optic nerve head and macular regions as a baseline for follow-up investigations, individual layer segmentation, and diagnostic assessment.

Optical coherence tomography to monitor vigabatrin toxicity in children.

PURPOSE: The antiepileptic drug vigabatrin is known to cause permanent loss of vision. Both visual field testing and electroretinogram are used to detect retinal damage. Adult data on optical coherence tomography (OCT) shows that retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thinning may be an early indicator of vigabatrin-induced retinal toxicity. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether OCT can detect early vigabatrin-induced retinal toxicity in children. METHODS: Pediatric patients (≤18 years of age) requiring vigabatrin for seizure control who were followed at our institution were invited
