Uncommon fusion of teeth and lateral periodontal cyst in a Chinese girl: a case report.

Fusion is a developmental anomaly of dental hard tissues. Most cases occur in the anterior region of both the primary and permanent dentitions. Occasionally, fusion of permanent and supernumerary teeth may occur in the maxillary anterior region; however, a supernumerary tooth fused with a premolar is a rare case. Developmental lateral periodontal cyst is also an uncommon developmental odontogenic cyst with no clinical symptoms, and the lesion is often discovered on routine radiographic examination. In the present case, we report the uncommon fusion of teeth and lateral periodontal cyst in a Ch

A rare non-syndrome case of concomitant multiple supernumerary teeth and partial anodontia.

Concomitant hypo-hyperdontia is an uncommon condition of coexistence of partial anodontia and supernumerary teeth. Its etiology is still unknown. Very few cases have been reported in the literature of this condition. Presented here is a rare and first such case of simultaneous presence of multiple supernumerary teeth and a missing tooth (canine) without any associated systemic conditions or syndromes involving both jaws.

Supernumerary teeth in a Turkish population.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim in this study was to investigate the frequency, distribution, sex differences, and characteristics of supernumerary teeth in a referred Turkish population. METHODS: A total of 2599 patients' panoramic radiographs (1360 girls, 1239 boys) were evaluated, including children in both the mixed and the permanent dentitions. Their mean age was 8.6 +/- 0.23 years. Number, location, classification, side, and impaction of supernumerary teeth were evaluated. Furthermore, the development of these teeth was evaluated. RESULTS: Eighty-four supernumerary teeth were found on 69 radiogr

Osr2 acts downstream of Pax9 and interacts with both Msx1 and Pax9 to pattern the tooth developmental field.

Mammalian tooth development depends on activation of odontogenic potential in the presumptive dental mesenchyme by the Msx1 and Pax9 transcription factors. We recently reported that the zinc finger transcription factor Osr2 was expressed in a lingual-to-buccal gradient pattern surrounding the developing mouse molar tooth germs and mice lacking Osr2 developed supernumerary teeth lingual to their molars. We report here generation of a gene-targeted mouse strain that allows conditional inactivation of Pax9 and subsequent activation of expression of Osr2 in the developing tooth mesenchyme from the

Congenital tooth anomalies and malocclusions: a genetic link?

The aim of the present study was to investigate putative relationships between different malocclusions such as Class III and Class II division 1, and congenital tooth anomalies. Two-hundred Class III and 215 Class II division 1 patients were examined for the presence of any of the following congenital tooth anomalies: maxillary incisor hypodontia, maxillary canine impaction, transpositions, supernumerary teeth, and tooth agenesis. Their occurrence rates were then calculated as a percentage of the total sample and were compared for statistical differences. The results revealed no statistical di

Non-syndrome multiple supernumerary teeth: A case report.

AIM: The purpose of this case report is to present a case of a non-syndrome male patient with multiple supplemental supernumerary teeth in three quadrants of his mouth. BACKGROUND: Supernumerary teeth are described as the teeth formed in excess of the number found in a normal dentition. Prevalence of supernumerary teeth varies between 0.1% and 3.8% in the general Caucasian population. Multiple supernumerary teeth are not a common occurrence, although a single or a few supernumerary tooth/teeth in each case have been widely reported in the literature. REPORT: An 11-year-old male presented for

Management of the fused permanent upper lateral incisor: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Fusion is the embryologic union of normally discrete structures. The treatment of this anomaly usually requires a multidisciplinary approach. Cone-beam computerized tomography (CBCT) is more common in dentistry and provides valuable information on fused teeth, allowing us to confirm its 3-dimensional structure and precise 3-dimensional cutting-plane line, which is very important to prevent pulp exposure in the conserved tooth. STUDY DESIGN: An 8-year-old boy presented with a permanent maxillary left lateral incisor fused with a supernumerary tooth. Hemisection was delayed until th

Tooth resorption in the Swedish Eurasion lynx (Lynx lynx).

The etiology of tooth resorption in the domestic cat remains unknown. The high prevalence and progressive nature of the disease complicates defining healthy control groups. In order to evaluate the possible influence of various life style changes on the prevalence of tooth resorption, healthy control groups are a prerequisite. This paper presents a prevalence study for tooth resorption in a free-ranging wild felidae population. Skulls from 46 free-ranging Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) were examined. The age of the animals had previously been estimated based on cementum annuli in the maxillary righ

Primary failure of eruption- a case report with cone beam computerized tomographic imaging.

Tooth eruption is an intricate and complex process which can fail to occur due to several reasons. Failure of tooth eruption in the absence of any systemic condition or any obstruction in the eruptive pathway can be attributed to lack of inherent eruptive potential of the tooth, termed as Primary Failure of Eruption (PFE). This is a rare condition and usually has a genetic etiology. Here we report a rare case in which there is Primary Failure of Eruption in the mandibular right quadrant. There is also mechanical failure of eruption of maxillary right canine and supernumerary teeth palatal to t

Three-dimensional evaluations of supernumerary teeth using cone-beam computed tomography for 487 cases.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to introduce the use of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) for evaluation of supernumerary teeth. METHODS: The study group comprised 487 patients with a total of 626 supernumerary teeth who were examined by CBCT. Patient characteristics were recorded, and the number, location, shape, and 3-dimensional position of the supernumeraries were analyzed. The ability of CBCT to visualize dental and skeletal structures relative to supernumerary teeth was also evaluated. RESULTS: Males were affected more than females in a ratio of 2.64:1.
