Decreased alveolar bone turnover is related to the occurrence of root resorption during experimental tooth movement in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between root resorption (RR) and bone turnover in two different types of tooth movement in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 16 dogs in two different groups were used. Tooth movement of dog premolars resulted from approximately 200 g of force. Histomorphometric analysis of premolar roots was assessed after 4 and 12 weeks of tooth movement by comparing nonresorptive to resorptive surfaces. RESULTS: Histomorphometric analysis indicated a significant decrease in the bone formation rate in the root resorptive areas, which resulted in decreased bon

The combination use of platelet-rich fibrin and treated dentin matrix for tooth root regeneration by cell homing.

Endogenous regeneration through cell homing provides an alternative approach for tissue regeneration, except cell transplantation, especially considering clinical translation. However, tooth root regeneration through cell homing remains a provocative approach in need of intensive study. Both platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) and treated dentin matrix (TDM) are warehouses of various growth factors, which can promote cell homing. We hypothesized that endogenous stem cells are able to sense biological cues from PRF membrane and TDM, and contribute to the regeneration of tooth root, including soft and ha

Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 1 with multiple neurofibromas of the entire spinal nerve roots.

The coexistence of polyneuropathy which has the definite clinical and electromyographical findings consistent with Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) has infrequently been reported. We describe a patient with both CMT and NF1, who had multiple neurofibromas involving the entire spinal neural axis. In addition, he had multiple neurofibromas distributed within the ileopsoas and gluteus muscles and subcutaneous tissues. These lesions were detected readily by MRI and the patient underwent successful surgical resection of the largest tumours compressing bilateral

Characterization of mechanical properties of transgenic tobacco roots expressing a recombinant monoclonal antibody against tooth decay.

In this article, we describe a new approach that allows the determination of the magnitude of force required to break single plant roots. Roots were taken from transgenic tobacco plants, expressing a secreted monoclonal antibody. They were divided into four key developmental stages. A novel micromanipulation technique was used to pull to breakage, single tobacco roots in buffer in order to determine their breaking force. A characteristic uniform step-wise increase in the force up to a peak force for breakage was observed. The mean breaking force and mean work done were 101mN and 97microJ per r

Effects of a doubled orthodontic force magnitude on tooth movement and root resorptions. An inter-individual study in adolescents.

The aim of this clinical and histological study was to compare the effects of two controlled, continuous forces of 50 cN (approximately 50 g) and 100 cN (approximately 100 g) on tooth movement and root resorptions. The patients, consisting of 32 individuals, 14 boys and 18 girls (mean age 13.1 years), were divided into four groups of eight individuals. The experimental periods were 4 and 7 weeks. In this investigation, designed as an inter-individual study, only the maxillary first premolar on the right side was utilized. The test tooth was buccally moved by means of a fixed orthodontic applia

Inhibitory effect of the topical administration of a bisphosphonate (risedronate) on root resorption incident to orthodontic tooth movement in rats.

Root resorption associated with tooth movement is an unsolved problem in orthodontics. If such root resorption could be prevented, it would be an important contribution toward reducing risk factors in orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the topical administration of a bisphosphonate, risedronate, which is known to be a potent blocker of bone resorption, on root resorption during tooth movement and on the repair of the resorbed root surface after tooth movement in rats. In the first experiment, both the right and left upper first molars were moved bucc

Population variation in tooth, jaw, and root size: a radiographic study of two populations in a high-attrition environment.

Radiographs were taken of the jaws of skeletal remains of two populations of different-phenotype Prehistoric Australians from Roonka and Early New Zealanders (Maoris). On these radiographs crown, root, and corpus size were measured. Corpus height was subdivided into alveolar bone height, defined as the bone superior to the mandibular canal, and basal bone height, defined as that inferior to the mandibular canal. Both between and within the two populations there was a significant and negative correlation between crown size and corpus height. The differences between the two populations in corpus

Gli2 and Gli3 synergistically mediate HH-TGF-β crosstalk in mesenchymal progenitor cells to orchestrate tooth root morphogenesis.

Hedgehog (HH) signaling is essential in directing the fate determination of postmigratory cranial neural crest cells (CNCCs) to ensure proper craniofacial development. Gli transcription factors (TFs) are established as primary effectors of HH signaling, yet their distinct roles and regulatory mechanisms in governing cell commitment and differentiation of postmigratory CNCCs remain poorly understood. Here, using tooth root as a model, we combined transgenic mouse models with bioinformatic analyses to interrogate the functions of Gli2 and Gli3 in CNCC-derived root progenitor cells of the mouse m

Effect of local administration of injectable platelet-rich fibrin on root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement in dogs.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to assess the effect of local administration of injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF) on root resorption during orthodontic tooth movement in dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This animal study was conducted on 4 adult male mongrel dogs. The right and left maxillary first premolars of the dogs were extracted, and a Nickel-Titanium closed coil spring was used to connect the canine to the second premolar with 150 g load. Next, 0.5 cc of i-PRF was injected in one quadrant of the maxilla around the second premolar into the periodontal ligament. The other quadrant of the

Abnormal neurofilament inclusions and segregations in dorsal root ganglia of a Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2E mouse model.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease or hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy is the most prevalent inherited peripheral neuropathy and is associated with over 90 causative genes. Mutations in neurofilament light polypeptide gene, NEFL cause CMT2E, an axonal form of CMT that results in abnormal structures and/or functions of peripheral axons in spinal cord motor neurons and dorsal root ganglion neurons. We have previously generated and characterized a knock-in mouse model of CMT2E with the N98S mutation in Nefl that presented with multiple inclusions in spinal cord neurons. In this report, we c

Human life history evolution explains dissociation between the timing of tooth eruption and peak rates of root growth.

We explored the relationship between growth in tooth root length and the modern human extended period of childhood. Tooth roots provide support to counter chewing forces and so it is advantageous to grow roots quickly to allow teeth to erupt into function as early as possible. Growth in tooth root length occurs with a characteristic spurt or peak in rate sometime between tooth crown completion and root apex closure. Here we show that in Pan troglodytes the peak in root growth rate coincides with the period of time teeth are erupting into function. However, the timing of peak root velocity in m

Three-dimensional finite element analysis of the mechanical stress on root from orthodontic tooth movement by sliding mechanics.

In order to study mechanical stress on root from orthodontic tooth movement by sliding mechanics, a 3-dimensional finite element model incorporating all layers of a human mandibular dental arch with orthodontic appliance has been developed to simulate mechanical stress on root from the orthodontic tooth movement. Simulated orthodontic force of 2 N at 0, 30 and 45 degree from the horizontal axis was applied to the crown of the teeth. The finite element analysis showed when orthodontic forces were applied to the tooth, the stress was mainly concentrated at the neck of the tooth decreasing unifor

Long-term Outcomes of Predoctoral Root Canal Therapy: Retreatment and Tooth Loss in a 17-year Institutional Cohort.

INTRODUCTION: Nonsurgical root canal therapy (RCT) is predictable; however, some teeth develop post-treatment disease requiring retreatment or extraction. This study evaluated the durability of predoctoral RCT by quantifying retreatment and tooth loss within a single institutional cohort. METHODS: This retrospective chart review used Axium records from January 1, 2008, through October 31, 2025. All nonsurgical RCTs in the predoctoral clinic (n = 7,340) were identified. Phase I quantified retreatment frequency. Phase II characterized retreated teeth by diagnosis, radiographic quality, intracor

Force threshold-dependent modulation of root resorption via the Nrf2/Keap1/p62 antioxidant pathway during orthodontic tooth movement.

INTRODUCTION: Orthodontically induced root resorption (OIRR) is a frequent yet poorly understood complication of orthodontic treatment. Emerging evidence links oxidative stress to mechanical loading. However, the regulation of redox homeostasis in periodontal tissues under varying force magnitudes remains unclear. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), a master regulator of antioxidant defense, modulates inflammation and bone remodeling, but its force-dependent role in OIRR is undefined. METHODS: Periodontal ligament fibroblasts were subjected to graded compressive forces (0-2 g/

Regular nicotine intake increased tooth movement velocity, osteoclastogenesis and orthodontically induced dental root resorptions in a rat model.

Orthodontic forces have been reported to significantly increase nicotine-induced periodontal bone loss. At present, however, it is unknown, which further (side) effects can be expected during orthodontic treatment at a nicotine exposure corresponding to that of an average European smoker. 63 male Fischer344 rats were randomized in three consecutive experiments of 21 animals each (A/B/C) to 3 experimental groups (7 rats, 1/2/3): (A) cone-beam-computed tomography (CBCT); (B) histology/serology; (C) reverse-transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR)/cotinine serology
