OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study based on CT images was to assess the age-related changes in maxillary sinus diameters in relation to diameters of the facial skeleton.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The retrospective analysis of CT images of the head of 170 patients aged 0-18 years (85 females and 85 males) was performed. Specific orientation points (zy, zm, pr, ns, n, and P) were identified in every patient and the following distances were measured: zy-zy, maximum facial width; zm-zm, midfacial width; n-pr, upper facial height; ns-pr, alveolar facial height; and ns-P, distance not indicated in cranio

Lemièrre's syndrome (LS) is an uncommon disease characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the jugular vein in the context of otorhinolaryngologic infections. These patients are often young and the pharyngotonsillar infection is the most frequent primary focus, but other foci like acute otitis media or otomastoiditis have been described. Although the internal jugular vein is the most commonly affected site, a few case reports have been published with thrombosis of other veins, such as the facial vein or transverse sinus. We report the case of a 93-year-old woman with an atypical presentation

Cerebral sinus vein thrombosis is rare in children. So far, only three other cases have been reported in a child with diabetes mellitus. This 10 year-old female presented with classic signs of diabetic ketoacidosis which resolved with standard fluid and insulin therapy. Headache persisted despite biochemical improvement and 6th nerve palsy became evident on Day 3. On Day 5, sudden deterioration in mental status to the point of coma with loss of airway protective reflexes prompted repeat imaging including magnetic resonance venography which demonstrated thrombosis of the superior sagittal, stra

OBJECTIVE: Parkinsonism caused by dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is very rare, however, it is reversible by endovascular treatment. We herein report a case of parkinsonism caused by DAVF with review of previous literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: An 87-year-old woman with parkinsonism and dementia was admitted to our hospital with disturbance of consciousness and aggravated parkinsonism symptoms. Plain CT revealed low-density areas in the brainstem and left cerebellar peduncle. Magnetic resonance images revealed hyperintense lesions on FLAIR, which had elevated apparent diffusion coefficient (

We aimed to examine the prevalence of cerebellar tonsil ectopia and Chiari 1 malformation in sensorineural hearing loss (SHL) that has, to the best of our knowledge, not been studied previously. Magnetic resonance imaging records of 166 subjects with SHL and 50 controls without known otologic disturbances were included in the study. A tonsils descent more than 2 mm was assumed as cerebellar ectopia, and a descent equal to or more than 5 mm was assumed as Chiari 1 malformation. A tonsil descent group was also formed by summation of both groups. Transverse diameters of bilateral intracranial ver

BACKGROUND: The maxillary sinus is a pyramid-shaped cavity with variations in shape, size, and capacity. Its dimensions increase gradually until early adulthood. Anatomical knowledge of the maxillary sinus is essential to understanding sinonasal disorders, planning surgical procedures, and preventing complications. Awareness of the sinus's proximity to critical structures helps avoid injuries during surgery. European, Korean, and Sri Lankan population study parameters show varying results and do not necessarily apply to the Indian population. The standard morphometric data of the maxillary sin

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to estimate the doses delivered to adult patients during explorations of the sinuses and coastal grill whose attention in dosimetric terms is neglected because of the low demand for diagnosis. But yet dosimetric values are very high.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was transversely descriptive and was conducted between April and July 2016. The data were collected on 50 adult patients of mass of 70±10kg at the Regional Hospital of Ngaoundere (HRN). The dose at the entrance of the patients' skin was evaluated through the theoretical methods der

A case of visual perseveration attack in the right superior quadrantic visual field caused by left transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistula (AVF) was reported. A 75-year old right-handed man noticed that when he saw an object, the image sometimes persisted even after he looked away or the object was removed. The palinoptic images always appeared in the right superior quadrant visual field, consisted of a row of multiple objects all identical to the real one in shape, and were accompanied by photopsia. The palinoptic images disappeared within a few minutes. He was neurologically nor

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) in treating transverse-sigmoid sinus dural arteriovenous fistulas (TSS DAVFs), and to investigate post-SRS sinus patency, focusing on the risk factors associated with treated sinus occlusion.
METHODS: Data from 34 patients treated with SRS between January 2006 and April 2023 were analyzed. Detailed angioarchitecture was confirmed using digital subtraction angiography before SRS. Angiography of the ipsilateral internal carotid artery and vertebral artery was performed to evaluate whether the involv

In this report, we are describing a rare case of dural arteriovenous fistula(DAVF)followed by an isolated symptom of bilateral visual acuity disturbance. The patient was a 67-year-old man suffering from progressive bilateral visual acuity disturbance. Angiography revealed a diffuse arteriovenous fistula in the left transverse-sigmoid sinus affected by severe venous congestion. Visual acuity disturbance is likely to have been caused by increased intracranial pressure(IICP). Venous congestion as well as visual acuity were gradually improved following three transarterial embolizations. It is poss

A 6-year-old male was found dead on his stomach with massive reddish vomiting from his mouth and nose. Postmortem cranial CT revealed an epidural haematoma in the left occipital region, but the cause and origin of the haematoma were unclear. An autopsy revealed that the epidural haematoma expanded over the left temporal region and the left side of the occipital region and posterior cranial fossa, and its origin was a laceration in the left transverse sinus induced by diastases in the left lambdoidal and occipitomastoid sutures. A pathohistological examination revealed that one portion of the h

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral venous sinus stenting (VSS) is an established treatment for transverse sinus (TS) stenosis associated with idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH). The authors' early practice favored shorter stents that only spanned the focal narrowing to reduce the metal burden. However, stent-adjacent stenosis (SAS) emerged as a significant failure mode prompting the use of longer constructs. In this study, the authors sought to compare the incidence of SAS, clinical outcomes, and angiographic findings between shorter and full-length stent constructs.
METHODS: The authors conducted a

The present study evaluates the efficacy and clinical outcomes of crestal sinus lift techniques used to elevate the sinus floor simultaneously with bone grafting and implant placement as a possible and reproducible alternative to lateral sinus lift. Patients underwent different crestal sinus elevation techniques. The heterologous biomaterial was used as graft material, and multiple implants were placed simultaneously after sinus augmentation. Radiographic and clinical examinations were performed during follow-up. All procedures were successfully performed without any apparent perforation of th

We present the second known case of a dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) associated with a glomus jugulare tumour in a 66-year-old man and the first with a presenting symptom of pulsatile tinnitus. The tumour occluded the left internal jugular vein at the bulb. Our patient opted for monitoring, but the tinnitus progressed and became debilitating, prompting him to proceed with embolisation of the tumour. Angiography revealed a DAVF of the left transverse sinus with retrograde flow. Embolisation of 80% of the tumour did not relieve symptoms. The patient returned for embolisation of the DAVF. Occ

In this article we present a case of an incidental encephalocoele protruding through a dural defect into the transverse sinus. Encephalocoeles are usually described as a herniation of the meninges and brain parenchyma through a bony defect of the cranium or base of skull. To our knowledge, there are only a few patients reported in the literature of occult encephalocoeles through dural defects. Our case study highlights that encephalocoele should be a differential diagnosis for a filling defect in this location.

Primary stabbing headache (PSH) is a primary syndrome of unknown aetiology, characterised by brief, jabbing stabs predominantly felt in the orbital, temporal and parietal areas, whose frequency may vary from one to many per day, usually responding to indomethacin. PSH frequency in the general population is not well defined, but recent evidence suggests it could be more frequent than previously thought. In clinical series, PSH incidence was 33/100,000 per year, while in a population study 35.2 % prevalence was found. PSH was previously described as isolated or associated to other headache syndr

Bacterial meningitis is an infectious pathology that remains a public health challenge. The most frequent etiological agent is Streptococcus pneumoniae, which is also associated with higher rates of mortality and sequels. However, less is known about the clinical presentation of atypical non-pneumoniae streptococcal meningitis. Here, we studied a 23-year-old man with no medical background who presented with projectile vomiting, states of consciousness alteration, unilateral cranial nerve palsy, and meningeal signs. Neuroimaging showed tonsillar herniation, regions of empyema, right transverse

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare cause of stroke that may mimic other intracranial disorders. A 32-year-old male with bipolar disorder and prior venous thromboembolism presented with severe occipital headache, progressive blurred vision, and a brief sensory episode. He reported recent chronic nitrous oxide use. Imaging revealed extensive thrombosis of the superior sagittal, bilateral transverse, and sigmoid sinuses with venous congestion but no infarction. Laboratory studies showed markedly elevated homocysteine, elevated methylmalonic acid, and low vitamin B12 levels. He was

Dural arteriovenous fistula (DAVF) is a rare condition affecting approximately 1.5% of 1,000,000 individuals annually. It frequently occurs in the transsigmoid and cavernous sinuses. An isolated sigmoid sinus is extremely rare and is treated by performing transfemoral transvenous embolization along the opposite transverse sinus. A 69-year-old woman presented with asymptomatic Borden type III/Cognard type III DAVF involving an isolated sigmoid sinus. She underwent a staged operation in which a navigation system was used to expose the sigmoid sinus in the operating room before transferring the p
