BACKGROUND: Although the ideal treatment of thumb basal joint osteoarthritis is debated, most surgeons advocate trapeziectomy with ligament reconstruction tendon interposition arthroplasty. However, harvesting and weaving autologous tendon creates scarring, alters wrist kinetics, may prolong recovery, and is time consuming. In this article, the authors propose a new method of arthroplasty using suture anchor suspensionplasty and cadaveric fascia lata interposition.
METHODS: Thirty-eight consecutive patients who underwent 46 thumb carpometacarpal joint arthroplasties were analyzed retrospectiv

Scapho-trapezio-trapezoid arthrodesis was originally performed for the treatment of scapho-lunate instability. However, only a few publications have described this technique for treatment of osteoarthritis of the scapho-trapezio-trapezoid (STT) joint. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the results of triscaphoid arthrodesis for STT osteoarthritis with a long-term follow-up. Thirteen cases of osteoarthritis of the STT joint in twelve patients, all treated by STT arthrodesis, were reviewed with an average follow-up of 60 months. Pain was classified according to Alnot's classification: eight

PURPOSE: Trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint replacement has become a valid option in the therapeutic arsenal of TMC joint osteoarthritis in Europe. Good mid-term results of the MAÏA TMC joint prosthesis suggested that it is a reliable procedure. This study aimed to assess the long-term results of this modular uncemented ball-and-socket hydroxyapatite-coated implant.
METHODS: This single-center retrospective study evaluated 92 MAÏA TMC joint prostheses in 76 patients with a minimum of 10 years of follow-up. Indications for the procedure were painful TMC joint osteoarthritis both at rest and during

OBJECTIVES: In this study, we aimed to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of patients undergoing arthrodesis and trapeziectomy with ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition (T + LRTI) for thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) osteoarthritis and to investigate whether patient-specific decision-making could offer advantages over LRTI or arthrodesis as a surgical approach.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between August 2014 and January 2025, a total of 40 patients who underwent surgical treatment for thumb CMC osteoarthritis were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into two group

BACKGROUND: Traditional surgical management of trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint destruction in rheumatoid arthritis involves trapezial resection with tendon interposition. The poly-l-d-lactide RegJoint (Scaffdex, Tampere, Finland) implant offers an alternative with promising short-term results in rheumatoid patients.
METHODS: This study reports long-term outcomes from a randomized controlled trial comparing partial trapeziectomy with the RegJoint versus tendon interposition TMC arthroplasties in patients with inflammatory arthritis, including seropositive and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, as w

Since its invention, the ball-and-socket prosthesis has played a significant role in treating carpometacarpal osteoarthritis of the thumb. One of the main postoperative complications remains prosthetic dislocation. To reduce this risk, engineers developed new designs - primarily the retentive cup and the dual-mobility cup. The aim of this study was to compare the stability and outcomes of these two designs, focusing specifically on dislocation as the primary variable. All Maia prostheses (n=118) implanted between 2019 and 2023 at a single institution by two surgeons using the same surgical tec

The bioabsorbable poly-L-D-lactide joint scaffold arthroplasty is a recent attempt in the reconstruction of small joints in rheumatoid patients. In this study, we analysed the 1-year clinical, functional and radiologic results of partial trapeziectomy with the poly-L-D-lactide (96/4) joint scaffold in 23 patients with isolated trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis. The results showed that the procedure provided pain relief and improvement in overall function according to the Quick Disabilities of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand score in most patients. However, radiographs demonstrated a high frequency

New technology has the potential to greatly impact the medical field because it may lead to a greater quality of life, decreased pain, or increased function for our patients. This manuscript will discuss the introduction of one such advance in hand surgery and hand therapy. Utilizing the Mini-Tightrope™ (Arthrex, Naples, FL) for suspension of the thumb metacarpal following trapeziectomy is a new technique for treating thumb carpometacarpal (CMC) arthritis. This technique is described as an example of the advantages of considering new techniques and technologies when treating established proble

BACKGROUND: There are multiple options for the treatment of thumb carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis (CMC1 OA), with evidence for pain relief and improved function. Although simple trapeziectomy has the lowest complication risk, tendon suspension of the first metacarpal and interposition is still the most commonly used surgical procedure in patients with CMC1 OA. Although there are several reports of good short-term results after trapeziectomy and tendon suspension-interposition arthroplasty, few studies have evaluated long-term outcomes. This study is one of the largest and longest follow-u

In scaphoid nonunion, pseudarthrosis and sclerotic change occur at the nonunion site. These changes make a distal fragment look like a trapezium on plain radiographs and we called this phenomenon the double trapezia sign. The purpose of this study was to estimate the diagnostic reliability of the double trapezia sign and its clinical and prognostic implications for the scaphoid nonunion.A retrospective review of 124 patients who underwent surgical treatment because of scaphoid nonunion between January 2007 and December 2017 was performed. Two hand surgeons and 1 musculoskeletal radiologist rev

Trapeziometacarpal arthrosis is the second most common disorder in the field of degenerative joint diseases of the hand, appearing ten to fifteen times more often in females older than 50 than in men of the same age group. Thus, an age group is afflicted where the hands are needed for occupational activity in addition to the physical strain of constant housework. However, no systematic data concerning the postoperative ability to perform household and or occupational activities have been reported. The aim of this study is to give better advice to future patients during office visits prior to t

INTRODUCTION: The Touch® dual-mobility prosthesis is a well-established treatment for advanced trapeziometacarpal (TMC) joint osteoarthritis, offering an alternative to resection arthroplasty. Short-term studies suggest dual-mobility designs reduce dislocation and loosening compared to single-mobility prostheses. This retrospective study presents clinical outcomes after a mean follow-up of 24 months, focusing on revision surgery and providing insights about key surgical steps and the management of adverse events.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 78 patients (88 prostheses) with TMC osteoarth

Partial trapeziectomy for basal joint arthritis is an alternative to total trapeziectomy that preserves the height of the thumb column. Using arthroscopy reduces the incidence of periarticular lesions and the risks of complications. The purpose of this prospective single-center study was to evaluate the results of arthroscopic partial trapeziectomy combined with suspension and interposition ligament reconstruction using half of the abductor pollicis longus tendon. Twenty patients (18 women, 2 men) with a mean age of 55 years (43-65 years) were operated using this technique between November 201
