Identifying Psychological Difficulties in College Athletes.

Psychological conditions occur frequently in college students. One contributing factor is the onset of most mental health disorders occurring in late adolescence and early adulthood, as well as the identity formation and individuation that is typical of this developmental stage. Precollege trauma (emotional, physical, sexual, and witness to violence) and lower socioeconomic status can set the stage for psychological difficulties. Some of many stressors that may affect college athletes include peer pressures, independence, need to please family, friends, and coaches, high level of expectations

Explorations of avoidance and approach coping and perceived stress with a computer-based avatar task: detrimental effects of resignation and withdrawal.

BACKGROUND: Individuals differ in how they react to stress or trauma through different coping styles in which they may deal directly with a stressor by adopting approach coping styles or disengage with a stressor by utilizing avoidant coping styles. Avoidant coping styles have been linked to adverse outcomes including psychological distress, anxiety disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Recently, avoidance coping styles as measured by a subset of items on the Brief COPE were found to have a weak positive relationship with performance on a computer-based avatar task which is rel

Differential contributions of PTSD symptom clusters and their associations with resilience in traumatized individuals with a refugee background.

Background: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is highly prevalent among refugees due to their exposure to traumatic events; however, many demonstrate resilience that mitigates its impact. Given the ethnocultural diversity of refugee populations, questions remain regarding whether their symptom presentation aligns with diagnostic and therapeutic frameworks developed in Western contexts. Furthermore, evidence is limited on how resilience relates to PTSD symptom clusters. Objective: We examined (a) the contribution of PTSD symptom clusters to the overall PTSD construct in traumatized individua

Sexual Abuse, Commercial Sexual Exploitation, and Cumulative Adversity Among Sexually Diverse and Non-Sexually Diverse Girls in the Juvenile Justice System.

Despite awareness about high rates of sexual abuse among girls in the juvenile justice system, little is known about the additional risk conferred upon sexually diverse (SD) youths, as well as the combined vulnerability of sexual abuse and commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) - frequently a survival behavior amplifying disproportionate juvenile justice contact among SD and non-SD juvenile justice-involved (JJI) girls. In a sample of JJI-girls, we compared SD (n = 52) with non-SD (n = 46) JJI-girls on sexual victimization (e.g. sexual abuse occurring within different relationship-t

Deep vein thrombosis and coagulopathy following cyclone events: pathophysiology, risk factors, and prevention.

Cyclone events, characterized by high winds, flooding, and mass displacement, pose significant challenges to public health infrastructure and individual well-being. While acute injuries and infectious diseases are the primary focus of disaster response, thromboembolic complications such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and coagulopathies remain underrecognized. The convergence of immobility, dehydration, trauma, and systemic inflammation during and after cyclones creates an ideal environment for thrombus formation, particularly among vulnerable populations. This review explores the pathophysiolog
