Galactosomum nagasakiense n. sp. (Digenea: Heterophyidae) from the black-tailed gull, Larus crassirostris, with a description of metacercariae from some marine fishes developing trematode whirling disease.

Galactosomum nagasakiense n. sp. (Digenea: Heterophyidae), the causative parasite of trematode whirling disease of marine fish, is described, based on the specimens collected from the black-tailed gull, Larus crassirostris in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. The new species belongs to the cochleariformum group, and is different from the three species in the group: G. cochleare (Diesing, 1850) in the larger oral sucker and phaynx and smaller eggs, G. cochleariformum (Rudolphi, 1819) in the smaller oral sucker and pharynx and smaller eggs, and G. spinetum (Braun, 1901) in the uterus which extends ant

Experimental parasite community ecology: intraspecific variation in a large tapeworm affects community assembly.

Non-random species associations occur in naturally sampled parasite communities. The processes resulting in predictable community structure (e.g. particular host behaviours, cross-immunity, interspecific competition) could be affected by traits that vary within a parasite species, like growth or antigenicity. We experimentally infected three-spined sticklebacks with a large tapeworm (Schistocephalus solidus) that impacts the energy needs, foraging behaviour and immune reactions of its host. The tapeworms came from two populations, characterized by high or low growth in sticklebacks. Our goal w

Estimating the risk of swimmer's itch in surface waters - A case study from Lake Baldeney, River Ruhr.

Swimmer's itch is a zoonotic disease caused by certain digenean trematodes, in Europe most noticeably by bird schistosomes of the genus Trichobilharzia. These parasites require waterfowl and aquatic snails as final and intermediate hosts, respectively, to complete their life cycle. Swimmer's itch occurs when the free-swimming larvae emitted from snails, the cercariae, accidentally infect humans. Here the parasites cannot complete their life cycle but can cause allergic inflammatory responses of the skin. In the context of the joint BMBF project 'Sichere Ruhr' (Safe Ruhr), which evaluates the R

A SURVEY OF ENDOHELMINTH DIVERSITY OF BIRDS COLLECTED IN THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY AREA.

The helminth fauna of birds has been the focus of many parasitological studies, which illustrate the especially diverse nature of avian helminth communities. In this study, we investigated the species richness, identity, and abundance of helminth infections in 17 species of birds representing 6 orders from the San Francisco Bay Area of California. A total of 70 birds were provided by wildlife rehabilitation centers and hunting groups from 13 California counties. Helminths were identified morphologically to the lowest taxonomic level, and, whenever possible, trematode identifications were confi

Epidemiology and diversity of gastrointestinal tract helminths of wild ruminants in sub-Saharan Africa: a review.

This review summarises studies on distribution, diversity, and prevalence of gastrointestinal helminth infections in wild ruminants in sub-Saharan Africa. The results showed that 109 gastrointestinal tract (GIT) helminth species or species complexes were recorded in 10 sub-Saharan African countries. South Africa reported the highest number of species because most studies were carried out in this country. Eighty-eight nematode species or species complexes were recorded from 30 wild ruminant species across eight countries. The genus Trichostrongylus recorded the highest number of species and uti

[Mechanisms for the formation of a combination of the natural foci of trematodiases and tularemia in the floodplain-river ecosystem of the Konda River in different periods of epizootic activity of an infection focus].

The basis of the mechanism responsible for the formation of a combination of the natural foci of trematodiases and tularemia in the infection foci in the interepizootic periods is their association with the morphological structure of the floodplain-river landscape of the Konda River. The landscape's facias and holes, which are common to the foci, are integrated, by predetermining the territorial combination. The formation of a closed trinomial Francisella tularensis parasite system integrating these foci serves as a basis for the mechanism of the formation of a combination of the natural foci

Behavioral changes in host foraging: Experiments with Clinostomum (Trematoda, Digenea) parasitizing Loricariichthys platymetopon (Loricariidae).

Complex life cycle parasites can manipulate the behavior of intermediate hosts in order to reduce their fitness and increase the chance of completing life cycle. In order to understand the effects of the trematode parasites of the genus Clinostomum on host fish Loricariichthys platymetopon, a filmed experiment was carried out to quantify the foraging activity of hosts with different intensities of infection. The results suggest that hosts with higher parasite intensities reduced foraging activity early in the morning when compared to hosts with low intensities. This period may be critical for

Prevalence of Liver Trematodes in Sheep and Goats Slaughtered in the Siirt Province Slaughterhouse.

OBJECTIVE: Liver trematodes are parasites that adversely affect animal health and cause reduced productivity in ruminants in endemic areas. This study was conducted to determine the prevalence of liver trematodes in sheep and goats slaughtered in Siirt, where small ruminant breeding is widely practiced. METHODS: This study was conducted between January 1 and May 15, 2025. Fecal samples collected from animals before slaughter at the Siirt province slaughterhouse were evaluated using the sedimentation method. In addition, the livers, bile ducts, and gallbladders of the slaughtered animals were

Mucocutaneous manifestations of helminth infections: Nematodes.

In the 21st century, despite increased globalization through international travel for business, medical volunteerism, pleasure, and immigration/refugees into the United States, there is little published in the dermatology literature regarding the cutaneous manifestations of helminth infections. Approximately 17% of travelers seek medical care because of cutaneous disorders, many related to infectious etiologies. This review will focus on the cutaneous manifestations of helminth infections and is divided into 2 parts: part I focuses on nematode infections, and part II focuses on trematode and c

Intestinal parasites of raccoons (Procyon lotor) from southwest British Columbia.

This is the first extensive survey of metazoan parasites (particularly of the roundworm Baylisascaris procyonis) from the intestines of raccoons in British Columbia. The sample collected in 1997-1998 consisted of 82 raccoons that had been sick or had been killed accidentally by automobiles. Fifteen parasite taxa were found: 3 nematodes, 9 digenetic trematodes, 2 acanthocephalans and 1 cestode. Ten of these parasites constitute new host records for raccoons, including 4 digenetic trematodes that have been reported in marine birds and mammals on the Pacific Coast of North America. Baylisascaris

Genetic diversity studies on trematode parasites of Ovines in North Kashmir, India.

Trematode infections are recognized as one of the most economically important helminthic diseases hampering the productivity of domestic ruminants globally. The study aimed to estimate the prevalence, identify the epidemiological risk factors, confirm morphological identifications using ITS-2 and 28S rDNA sequencing and analyze the pathological effects for development of suitable control strategies. Examination of 80 gastrointestinal tracts from locally reared sheep in North Kashmir revealed an overall prevalence of 26.25% (21/80; 95% CI: 16.6-35.9). The five species of trematode parasites ide

Endocrine and immune responses of larval amphibians to trematode exposure.

In nature, multiple waves of exposure to the same parasite are likely, making it important to understand how initial exposure or infection affects subsequent host infections, including the underlying physiological pathways involved. We tested whether experimental exposure to trematodes (Echinostoma trivolvis or Ribeiroia ondatrae) affected the stress hormone corticosterone (known to influence immunocompetence) in larvae representing five anuran species. We also examined the leukocyte profiles of seven host species after single exposure to R. ondatrae (including four species at multiple time po

THE COCCIDIA SPECIES PFEIFFERINELLA ELLIPSOIDES EXHIBITS SPATIAL AND SPECIES-SPECIFIC VARIATION IN PREVALENCE AMONG FRESHWATER SNAILS.

Freshwater snails are commonly studied within the context of their role as intermediate hosts for digenetic trematodes. However, there are fundamental data deficiencies related to our understanding of directly transmitted parasites, such as coccidia, for freshwater snails. Because variation in coccidia pathogenicity and transmission among snail species likely has major impacts on snail community structure, we aimed to investigate the spatial distribution and prevalence of coccidia in several freshwater snail species throughout the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains ecoregions in Arkansas. We opportu

Trematode-Associated Renal Lesions in Stranded Humboldt Penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) Along the Chilean Coast.

Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) are classified as Vulnerable and listed in Appendix I of CITES, making the investigation of stranding and mortality causes essential for their conservation. This study describes the post-mortem findings of five Humboldt penguins stranded along the Chilean coast during 2025, focusing on renal and ureteral lesions associated with trematode infection. Gross examination revealed multifocal to coalescing renal lesions, including intrapelvic white purulent material and marked thickening of the ureteral walls. Histopathological analysis demonstrated moderate t

Travel-Related Parasitic Infections in Travellers to Southeast Asia and Western Pacific Countries.

In the last decades, there has been a significant increase in international human mobility with increase in the prosperity, travel possibilities, and number of refugees. In the first half of 2016, the Asian continent showed the fastest growth in the number of tourists. Such increase is seen due to the interest in Asian history, culture, and cuisine. In the globalizing world, human mobility causes changes in the epidemiology of diseases and the spread of various infections across continents. Parasitic infections that may pose a risk for travellers to the Asia-Pacific are malaria, leishmaniasis,

This article describes the drugs used in helminthic infections and their therapeutic indications, mode of action, toxicity and other details of each of the recommended drugs, and discusses the nature and treatment of infection by helminths important in human medicine. Infestation due to the roundworms Enterobius vermicularis, Ascaris lumbricoides and the hookworms, Ancylostoma duodenale and Necator americanus can all be treated effectively with pyrantel pamoate. For Enterobius vermicularis, however, a newer drug, mebendazole, is equally as effective. The advantage of these drugs in the indicat

Fish and Food-Fatale: Food-borne Trematode Opisthorchis viverrini and Cholangiocarcinoma.

Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs) are a group of communicable diseases with a long history with human beings. NTDs are the proxy of poverty since they affect those in low-income and extreme-poverty populations, as those populations lack access to proper health care, clean water, sanitary conditions, and hygiene. NTDs create losses for a nation that come from the health and the economic sectors as well since the costs of diagnosis, prevention, and treatment strain the national purse strings. One of the 20 different forms of NTDs on the list is food-borne trematodes, comprises of Fasciola, Para

Neuroschistosomiasis due to Schistosoma mansoni: a review of pathogenesis, clinical syndromes and diagnostic approaches.

Neuroschistosomiasis (NS) is the second most common form of presentation of infection by the trematode, Schistosoma mansoni. Granulomatous inflammatory reaction occurs as a result of schistosome eggs being transmitted to spinal cord or brain via the vascular system, or by inadvertent adult worm migration to these organs. The two main clinical syndromes are spinal cord neuroschistosomiasis (acute or subacute myelopathy) and localized cerebral or cerebellar neuroschistosomiasis (focal CNS impairment, seizures, increased intracranial pressure). Presumptive diagnosis of NS requires confirming the
