[Bioethics in catastrophe situations such as earthquakes].

A catastrophe of the magnitude of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Chile not long ago, forces us to raise some questions that we will try to answer from a philosophical, ethical and responsibility viewpoints. An analysis of the basic principles of bioethics is also justified. A natural catastrophe is not, by itself, moral or immoral, fair or unfair. However, its consequences could certainly be regarded as such, depending on whether they could have been prevented or mitigated. We will identify those individuals, who have the ethical responsibility to attend the victims and the ethical princi

Microbiologic study of the pathogens isolated from wound culture among Wenchuan earthquake survivors.

On May 12, an unprecedented earthquake struck Wenchuan County, Sichuan, China, and 1823 victims were admitted to West China Hospital, Sichuan, China. A total of 464 nonduplicate clinical isolates from wounds of earthquake victims were analyzed. The results show that the most common pathogen was Staphylococcus aureus, but only 24.4% of the total isolates were Gram-positive bacteria, and 73.2% were Gram-negative bacteria. The isolates were significantly different from isolation pattern of 2004 tsunami in Thailand. The isolation rates of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase producer and pandrug-resis

Automated forensic DNA purification optimized for FTA card punches and identifiler STR-based PCR analysis.

Forensic labs globally face the same problem-a growing need to process a greater number and wider variety of samples for DNA analysis. The same forensic lab can be tasked all at once with processing mixed casework samples from crime scenes, convicted offender samples for database entry, and tissue from tsunami victims for identification. Besides flexibility in the robotic system chosen for forensic automation, there is a need, for each sample type, to develop new methodology that is not only faster but also more reliable than past procedures. FTA is a chemical treatment of paper, unique to Wha

What is the association between post-traumatic stress disorder and unemployment after a disaster?

OBJECTIVES: The problem is to determine whether, after a disaster, unemployment is a possible cause of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) - the classic model, or whether PTSD is a possible cause of unemployment - the alternative model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was conducted on a probabilistic sample of 26 213 adults who provided responses using the Davidson Trauma Scale and lived in regions near or far from the epicenter (Cobquecura, the coast of Chile) of the earthquake and tsunami of February 27, 2010. RESULTS: Independent of the proximity to the epicenter, there is an associatio

Global Collaboration in Times of COVID-19: Cuba's Emergency Medical Contingent.

The days are long and arduous, with end-less patients to attend, often in a foreign language, always on foreign shores. Far from family and the familiar. Sleep is fi tful at best for health profession-als serving in emergency situations-when sickness obeys no clock and patients' pain haunts even the quiet moments. The crisis scenario varies: post-earthquake, hurricane or tsunami; amid a cholera or Ebola epidemic. The countries vary: Haiti, Pakistan, Guatemala, Mozambique, Sierra Leone. What does not vary is the answer to the calls for help and Cuban professionals' commitment to care for the mo

Enhancement of PTSD treatment through social support in Idobata-Nagaya community housing after Fukushima's triple disaster.

Cognitive-behavioural therapy is a first-line treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but it is difficult to implement in disaster settings. We report the case of an 80-year-old Japanese woman, who was diagnosed with PTSD after the 2011 triple disaster (earthquake, tsunami and nuclear plant accident) in Fukushima. Her recovery was greatly enhanced by the social support she received while living in Idobata-Nagaya community housing, established by Soma city in Fukushima, where residents could naturally discuss their traumatic experiences. Habituation to traumatic memories and proces

Two halves make a whole: Both first responders and experts are needed for the management and identification of the dead in large disasters.

Catastrophic natural disasters are a regular global issue claiming thousands of lives and having severe and long lasting consequences for communities. Along with the rescue and care of survivors and the provision of basic services, managing the dead in a proper and dignified manner is one of the three pillars of disaster response. Since the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami, progress to facilitate better coordination in the management of the dead has been made. Two guidelines contributing to this positive trend are the Interpol DVI Guide, and the "Management of the Dead after Disasters - A Field Manua

The mental health impact of volunteering in a disaster setting: a review.

This article reviews the literature on mental health of volunteers after working in disasters. When mobilized they often are a community's major source for rescue and recovery. PsychINFO, PubMED, and Web of Science were searched for relevant articles published until October 2009. Of 448 articles screened, only 9 articles fulfilled our inclusion criteria. They examined the aftermath of earthquakes (4 articles), terrorist bombings (1), explosions (1), aviation disasters (1), tsunami (1), and a bus accident (1).Findings showed that, compared with professional workers, volunteers tend to have high

Re-identification of clinical isolates of the Pseudallescheria boydii-complex involved in near-drowning.

Fungal infections caused by the members of the genera Pseudallescheria and/or Scedosporium are important complications in patients after near-drowning. As the taxonomy of Pseudallescheria and Scedosporium has been revised, clinical isolates from 11 patients, after near-drowning, previously identified as P. boydii or S. apiospermum had to be re-identified. S. apiospermum, now separated from P. boydii as a distinct species, was found most frequently (n = 8), while S. aurantiacum, recently described as new species and P. boydii were less common (n = 2 and n = 1, respectively). Three patients near

Dengue virus-specific suppressor T cells: current perspectives.

Dengue virus was the first microorganism that was shown to induce generation of antigen-specific suppressor T (TS) cells in mice. The cascade of the three generations of TS cells (TS1, TS2, TS3) and their secretary products, the suppressor factors (SF1, SF2), was delineated. The TS pathway was proposed to be protective through inhibition of the production of enhancing antibody, which may enhance the severity of dengue disease. The currently second most favoured mechanism of severe dengue disease is the 'cytokine tsunami'. During the last decade, suppressor/regulatory T cells have been studied

Integrating digital risk communication and indigenous knowledge in megathrust mitigation in Sukabumi Regency.

UNLABELLED: Indonesia's southern Java coast faces a substantial threat from megathrust earthquakes and near-field tsunamis, where warning times are limited, and community preparedness remains uneven. This study examines how integrating digital communication tools with local and indigenous knowledge can strengthen disaster risk communication and enhance preparedness in high-risk coastal communities. Using a convergent mixed-methods design with a participatory orientation, fieldwork was conducted in Sukatani and Karangpapak Villages, Sukabumi Regency, West Java, between July 2024 and August 2024

Dental Evidence in Forensic Identification - An Overview, Methodology and Present Status.

Forensic odontology is primarily concerned with the use of teeth and oral structures for identification in a legal context. Various forensic odontology techniques help in the identification of the human remains in incidents such as terrorists' attacks, airplane, train and road accidents, fires, mass murders, and natural disasters such as tsunamis, earth quakes and floods, etc. (Disaster Victim Identification-DVI). Dental structures are the hardest and well protected structures in the body. These structures resist decomposition and high temperatures and are among the last ones to disintegrate a

Managing Groundwater Radioactive Contamination at the Daiichi Nuclear Plant.

The Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami of March 2011 severely damaged three reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power station, leading to a major release of radiation into the environment. Groundwater flow through these crippled reactors continues to be one of the main causes of contamination and associated transport of radionuclides into the Pacific Ocean. In this context, a number of strategies are being implemented to manage radioactive pollution of the water resources at the nuclear plant site. Along with water treatment and purification, it is critical to restrict the groundwat

Atmospheric muography for imaging and monitoring tropic cyclones.

Large-scale solid bodies on Earth such as volcanoes and man-made pyramids have been visualized with solid earth muography, and the recently invented technique, acqueous muography, has already demonstrated its capability to visualize ocean tides and tsunami. In this work, atmospheric muography, a technique to visualize and monitor the vertical profile of tropic cyclones (TCs) is presented for the first time. The density distribution and time-dependent behavior of several TCs which had approached Kagoshima, Japan, has been investigated with muography. The resultant time-sequential images capture

Designing an emergency medical information system for the early stages of disasters in developing countries: the human interface advantage, simplicity and efficiency.

The means of designing an effective user interface software package varies from one application to another. Almost the entire ICT infrastructure was damaged following the impact of the tsunami tidal wave. Under such circumstances, transporting critically ill patients is a must and becomes the first priority. Many considerations are needed when designing a specific user interface for emergency situations in developing countries. In this study we proposed how to design the user interface in order to support emergency medical care in the early stages of disasters. The user interface was classifie

The USNS Mercy and the changing landscape of humanitarian and disaster response.

Operation Unified Assistance was the United States' historic response to the tsunami that struck Southeast Asia on December 26, 2004. The USNS Mercy participated in Operation Unified Assistance from January to March 2005. Stationed off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, the Mercy's crew consisted of uniformed members of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Public Health Service and civilian members of Project HOPE. The Mercy's participation in Operation Unified Assistance provided a platform and context to study disaster-related psychological processes. Observations of crew members aboard the Mercy suggested

Locked in grief: a qualitative study of grief among family members of missing persons in southern Sri Lanka.

INTRODUCTION: The psychological and social issues experienced by family members of missing persons are different from normal grief following the death of a loved one. The term "Ambiguous loss" describes this psychological phenomenon. Ambiguous loss acts as a barrier to adjusting to grief, leading to symptoms of depression and intra and interpersonal relational conflicts. An in-depth phenomenological understanding of this subjective experience is important. METHOD: A qualitative study was conducted among close family members of persons who had gone missing during the civil conflict and the 200
