The association of FRAX with predictors of falls in the assessment of postmenopausal osteoporosis in Turkey: the fracture study of Turkey (FRACT study).

UNLABELLED: Although FRAX is used for fracture risk evaluation, this tool does not include balance and fall risk. The association between the predictors of falls and high FRAX scores we found in this study suggests that risk indicators for falls may add substantial value to FRAX by improving fracture risk prediction. PURPOSE: This observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study aimed to assess the fall risk predictors and explore their association with FRAX in Turkish patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis. METHODS: Two hundred and nine (209) women with postmenopausal osteoporosis r

Age-based host response to Turkey arthritis reovirus in commercial Turkeys in the presence of maternally derived antibodies.

BACKGROUND: Turkey arthritis reovirus (TARV) causes arthritic lameness in market-age turkeys. Since 2011, highly pathogenic TARV strains have caused significant economic losses in the turkey industry due to increased culling, reduced market weights, and decreased carcass quality, necessitating more effective control measures. Autogenous vaccine prevention strategies have been inefficacious partly due to a limited understanding of age-related susceptibility of turkeys to TARV. This study investigated age-related host and gut microbiota responses to TARV infection in commercial turkeys derived f

Investigation of the Canine Leishmaniasis in Hatay/Turkey.

Canine Leishmaniasis (CanL) is a zoonotic vector-borne disease caused by Leishmania parasite in dogs. It represents a significant public health concern due to its potential for transmission to humans. In our study, we aimed to investigate CanL in Hatay using different diagnostic methods. Blood (plain and citrated) samples, lymph node aspiration, and conjunctival swabs were collected from 100 dogs. Smear preparations were prepared from blood and lymph aspiration. NNN medium was cultured from blood pellet sections and lymph aspiration. The rK39 dipstick test and ELISA were used to investigate th

Turkey Hemorrhagic Enteritis (THE): A Short Overview.

Turkey Hemorrhagic Enteritis (THE) is an acute disease caused by a Siadenovirus that affects 4 week-aged and older turkeys, characterized by acute depression, bloody droppings, and a high mortality rate. The immunosuppressive attributes of THE can protract disease progression and create a predisposition in birds towards subsequent bacterial infectiodoralns involving Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens (necrotic enteritis). Turkey Hemorrhagic Enteritis Virus (THEV) predominantly affects turkeys and carries substantial economic implications for this industry. Macrophages and B lymphocyt

Investigation of Parasites in Food Handlers in Turkey.

Increasing world population parallelly also brings an increase in food production and consumption. As food consumption increases, so do foodborne infections. In cases where adequate food safety and hygiene is not provided in places such as restaurants, dormitories, prisons, hospitals where mass feeding is made outside the home, many parasitic agents can be transmitted to people through food. People working in the food processing and distribution sector and who are in the position of porters play an important role in the spread of parasites, as they can transmit parasitic agents to food through

Types of violence were categorized as verbal threats, physical assaults, confrontation, stalking, and sexual harassment. Results A total of 366 physicians completed the survey; 4 were excluded (minimum 20 hours/week). Sixty-two percent of respondents were men. Ninety-nine percent reported verbal abuse and 54% reported

Hereditary Tyrosinemia Type 1 in Turkey.

Hereditary tyrosinemia type 1 (HT1, OMIM 276700) is a rare autosomal recessively inherited inborn error of metabolism in the tyrosine catabolic pathway due to deficiency of the enzyme fumarylacetoacetate hydrolase. The clinical features of HT1 are widely heterogenous even within the same family members. Clinical features includes acute or chronic liver disease with increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma, hypophosphatemic rickets due to renal tubular dysfunction, glomerulosclerosis, failure to thrive, neurological porphyria-like crisis, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and hypoglycemia due to hy

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to estimate the current incidence of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) and the need for treatment in preterm infants in Turkey. METHODS: The study included preterm infants who had been screened for ROP between 2011 and 2013 in 49 neonatal intensive care units. Infants with birth weight (BW) ≤1500 g or ≤32 weeks' gestational age and those with BW >1500 g or >32 weeks' GA with an unstable clinical course were included. The incidence of any ROP or severe ROP and treatment modalities were determined. RESULTS: The study population included 15 745 preterm i

Two hundred and fourteen patients who had a cough illness lasting at least 2 weeks were studied to investigate Bordetella pertussis as a cause of prolonged cough in adolescents and adults. Medical history and nasopharyngeal swab specimens for culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were obtained at presentation. Three (1·4%) patients were B. pertussis culture-positive; 15 (7%) were B. pertussis PCR-positive (including the culture-positive patients) and 11 (5·1%) were Bordetella spp. PCR-positive. Symptom combinations were significantly high both in patients with pertussis and patients with

Rapid decrease of neonatal mortality in Turkey.

Our aim was to assess trends in neonatal mortality in 2009, evaluate advances in health policy, determine new goals to preserve a higher quality health service, and to prevent neonatal deaths. Data were gathered from the system of the General Directorate of Mother and Child and Family Planning. Maternal age, birth weight, gestational week, delivery at a health center, delivery by trained assistant, antenatal visits, and cause of death were evaluated. The neonatal mortality rate was 10/1,000 in Turkey in 2009, significantly better than rates of 26 in 1998, 17 in 2003, and 13 in 2008. The percen

Leading infectious diseases problems in Turkey.

Turkey has significant geographical and socio-economic differences throughout a vast area of the country. These characteristics affect the epidemiology of infectious diseases, some of which are rarely seen in western Europe. However, effectively implemented control measures have resulted in decreased rates of many community-acquired infections, including tuberculosis and malaria, that were major health problems only a few decades ago. There are high rates of antimicrobial resistance in various nosocomial isolates of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. A recently implemented, nationwide,
