PURPOSE: To retrospectively evaluate the efficacy of extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) by age and current condition as a first-line treatment for pediatric and adolescent urolithiasis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The computerized records of 55 children were retrospectively reviewed from March 1991 to July 2007. The children were below 18 years of age and had undergone ESWL monotherapy for urolithiasis. There were 36 boys (65.5%) and 19 girls (34.5%), with a mean age of 8.5 years (range, 0.5-18 years). There were 24 patients aged 7 years or less and 31 patients aged more than 7 years.

An 8-year-old, entire male crossbreed dog had a 2-day history of abdominal pain and straining to urinate and defecate. A diagnosis of urolithiasis with urinary retention, and probable prostatitis was made. The dog was treated with fluids and enrofloxacin. Five days later, ultrasonography of the prostate showed two hypoechoic areas compatible with abscesses. Twelve hours later, the patient started to urinate from the rectum during micturition and urethrorectal fistula was diagnosed. The omentalization of the prostatic abscesses and castration were performed and calculi were removed. The urethro

The 10-year experience of the urological clinic of M.F. Vladimirsky Research Clinical Institute included treatment of 219 patients (age 21-68 years, mean age 52.3 +/- 12.4; 59.2% females, 40.8% males) with urolithiasis which developed in the presence of anomalies of the kidneys and upper urinary tract. Uroliths were detected in the kidneys with homolateral (n = 51, 23.7%), lumbar (n = 49), iliac (n = 1), pelvic (n = 2) dystopia. Chest and heterolateral dystopia of the kidneys were not detected. Extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) was used in 38 (77.6%) patients, 11 (22.4%) patients we

A 4-year-old, neutered male Chihuahua was presented with inappetance, lethargy, and a tense abdomen attributed to pain. Abdominal radiographs revealed a large cystic calculus and small urethral calculi. Urethral hydropulsion followed by cystotomy were performed successfully. Dietary management was initiated as the primary means of preventing recurrence.

Urinary tract occlusion in urolithiasis is a serious complication which provokes an attack of acute obstructive pyelonephritis. The infected urine aggravates this infectious-inflammatory process and endangers bacterial shock. Etiopathogenesis of this shock is outlined and modern approaches to its management are described.

Two cases of renal pelvis rupture caused by urolithiasis are reported. The first case was in a 62-year-old male who had left flank pain. Urological examination including drip infusion pyelography (DIP) and abdominal computed tomography (CT) revealed a spontaneous rupture of the left renal pelvis. The rupture was assumed to have been caused by a small ureteral stone. The stone passed spontaneously, and the extravasation disappeared with conservative therapy. The second case was in a 84-year-old male who was admitted with high fever. Urological examination including DIP and abdominal CT showed a

To specify the implication of the genetic factors in formal genesis of urolithiasis, the pattern of stone formation was investigated in 206 probands with urolithiasis hereditary loading versus 324 patients rejecting family history of this disease. Distribution of the disease forms was considered in correlation with mineral metabolism derangement and hereditary loading in the proband. It was found that severe urolithiasis occurs more frequently in the groups with phosphorus-calcium urolithiasis. These groups also included many families with the disease history. Numerous cases of urolithiasis of

The incidence and prevalence of urolithiasis in the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic is as high as in other countries of Central and Western Europe, and lower than in the Scandinavian countries. Apart from its high incidence, urolithiasis is characterized by its high tendency to recurrence. New knowledge of its pathogenesis helps to diagnose metabolic disorders responsible for increased excretion of concretion-producing substances and/or for deficiency in protective factors. In case of calcium oxalate lithiasis, with the highest incidence, attention is to be paid to its various forms of hyperca

BACKGROUND: Urolithiasis is a common condition that leads to serious health complications. Urinary stones have afflicted humans for millennia, with records dating back to 4800 BC. Preventing renal stone recurrence remains a common human health concern. Renal stones have been linked to an increased risk of chronic end-stage renal disease, renal failure, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and hypertension. Although conventional medicine provides multiple treatment options, Unani medicine offers an alternative approach, focusing on herbal remedies and holistic therapeutic practices.

PURPOSE: Pyelonephritis is quite common in patients with urolithiasis. This condition not only complicates the management of urolithiasis but also makes the treatment of associated urinary tract infections more challenging. The aim of this study is to identify the risk factors for pyelonephritis in patients with urolithiasis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 8,273 patients with urolithiasis were retrospectively screened (2016-2025). From this cohort, 302 patients who developed pyelonephritis and 302 age- and gender-matched controls without pyelonephritis were randomly selected, forming a mat

The incidence and prevalence of urolithiasis are increasing in industrialized countries. In particular, an increase has been observed among young adults and women. The gender gap is closing, and gender equality (1:1) with regard to urolithiasis has already been documented for the USA. Studies have demonstrated that women have higher urine pH values than men, which promotes calcium phosphate crystallization. The tendency for men to develop calcium oxalate and uric acid stones is caused by the comparatively lower urine pH values. Malnutrition combined with a lack of exercise and the occurrence o

Non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) is a mainstay in the diagnosis of urolithiasis, with multiple markers on NCCT used to predict the likelihood of stone passage and to assist in pre-operative planning. Ureter wall thickness (UWT) is one such parameter, however studies evaluating inter-observer agreement and comparing to native ureteral tissue are lacking. We aim to provide the first comparison of UWT from healthy human ureters with UWT measured on NCCT; and to evaluate for inter-observer variability on NCCT measurement. Human ureters were collected from consenting adults at the time of ra

Urolithiasis, or the formation of calculi in the urinary system, represents a prevalent urological condition frequently encountered among individuals aged 30 to 55 years. An in-depth analysis of the composition of these calculi holds significant promise in shedding light on the underlying etiological and pathogenic factors contributing to this ailment. The primary objective of this study was to delineate the principal components comprising urinary system calculi within a cohort of patients who sought medical intervention at a tertiary grade A hospital located in Baoding City. Furthermore, our

Objectives: This study aims to assess the outcomes of ultrasonography (US)-guided minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in the treatment of pediatric urolithiasis. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 176 patients with pediatric renal and upper ureteral lithotripsy who underwent PCNL between August 2006 and July 2022. The cohort comprised 110 men and 66 women, with ages ranging from 6 months to 16 years. Postoperative stone clearance was evaluated using kidney, ureter, and bladder radiograph or US, categorizing stones less than 4 mm as clear. Postoperative compli

Urolithiasis is an increasingly common clinical problem worldwide. The formation of stones is a combination of metabolic status, environmental factors, family history and many other aspects. It is important to find new ways to quickly detect and assess urolithiasis because it causes sudden, severe pain and often comes back. One way to do this is by exploring new biomarkers. Current advances in proteomic studies provide a great opportunity for breakthroughs in this field. This study focuses on protein biomarkers and their connection to kidney damage and inflammation during urolithiasis.
