Dietary patterns in Asian Indians in the United States: an analysis of the metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America study.

Dietary patterns contribute to cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. Asian Indians have earlier onset, more severe, and more prevalent CVD than many other racial/ethnic groups. We aimed to characterize dietary patterns in Asian Indians living in the United States and examine associations with cardiometabolic risk factors. One hundred fifty Asian Indians, aged 45 to 84 years, without known CVD, living in the San Francisco Bay, CA, area between August 2006 and October 2007 were enrolled into the Metabolic syndrome and Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America study. A food frequency questio

Epidemiology and symptom profile of gastroesophageal reflux in the Indian population: report of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology Task Force.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its complications are thought to be infrequent in India; there are no data from India on the prevalence of and risk factors for GERD. The Indian Society of Gastroenterology formed a task force aiming to study: (a) the frequency and profile of GERD in India, (b) factors including diet associated with GERD. METHODS: In this prospective, multi-center (12 centers) study, data were obtained using a questionnaire from 3224 subjects regarding the frequency, severity and duration of heartburn, regurgitation and other symptoms of GERD. Data were a

A systematic review and meta-analysis of functional vitamin B12 status among adult vegans.

The dietary intake of vitamin B12 among unsupplemented vegans is notably lower compared to both vegetarians and omnivores. Prolonged low intakes of vitamin B12, such as seen in those adhering to a vegan diet, lead to physiological deficiency of vitamin B12 and an elevated risk of B12-related morbidity. However, while serum B12 serves as a conventional biomarker for assessing B12 status, its utility is limited given its sensitivity and specificity in ascribing physiological deficiency of B12 and the functional vitamin B12 status of those adhering to vegan diets is unclear. We conducted a system

Defying Dietary Homogeneity: Stable Isotopes in Hair Reveal Persistent Geographic Heterogeneity in Argentina's Modern Diet.

OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the study is to characterize and test the hypothesis of a continuing trend toward homogenization in contemporary Argentine diet through stable isotope analysis, exploring regional variation in the context of globalized food systems. It is expected that the distribution of stable isotopes will exhibit a limited range of values but still display some heterogeneity that allows differentiation of dietary patterns by region. METHODS: A total of 204 hair samples were collected from volunteer donors in Argentina and analyzed for the stable isotopes δ13C, δ15N, and δ

Beyond sports: Efficacy and safety of creatine supplementation in pathological or paraphysiological conditions of brain and muscle.

Creatine is pivotal in energy metabolism of muscle and brain cells, both in physiological and in pathological conditions. Additionally, creatine facilitates the differentiation of muscle and neuronal cells. Evidence of effectiveness of creatine supplementation in improving several clinical conditions is now substantial, and we review it in this paper. In hereditary diseases where its synthesis is impaired, creatine has a disease-modifying capacity, especially when started soon after birth. Strong evidence, including a Cochrane meta-analysis, shows that it improves muscular strength and general

Discerning animal-sourced food in diet using isotope analysis of human scalp hair and fingernails.

PURPOSE: Diet-related diseases are advancing as the leading cause of death globally. As self-reporting of diet by patients can be associated with errors, stable isotopes of human tissues can be used to diagnose diseases, understand physiology, and detect change in diet. This study investigates the effect of type and amount of food on the nitrogen and carbon concentration (Nconc and Cconc) and isotopic composition (δ15N and δ13C) in human scalp hair and fingernails. METHODS: A total of 100 residents participated in the study whereas only 74 individuals provided complete diet history. Sixty-six

Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Recognition and Management.

Vitamin B12 deficiency is a common cause of megaloblastic anemia, various neuropsychiatric symptoms, and other clinical manifestations. Screening average-risk adults for vitamin B12 deficiency is not recommended. Screening may be warranted in patients with one or more risk factors, such as gastric or small intestine resections, inflammatory bowel disease, use of metformin for more than four months, use of proton pump inhibitors or histamine H2 blockers for more than 12 months, vegans or strict vegetarians, and adults older than 75 years. Initial laboratory assessment should include a complete

Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis Secondary to Vitamin B12 Deficiency - A Case Series with Emphasis on Food Fortification.

The etiology of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is multifactorial. Although many acquired and genetic factors have been recognized as risk factors, hyperhomocysteinemia (hHcy) is independently associated with CVST. We describe three cases of CVST in this case series. All of them presented with headache. Two patients had papilledema and visual disturbances. On evaluation, there was CVST, and prothrombotic workup showed hHcy. In addition, two of them reported very low Vitamin B12 levels. All of them were treated with low-molecular-weight heparin followed by oral anticoagulation and Vitam

Autoimmune gastritis in a male adolescent with cerebellar involvement: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune gastritis is an immune mediated disorder characterized as anti-intrinsic factor and anti-parietal cell autoantibodies directed against intrinsic factor and parietal cells of the stomach respectively, leading to vitamin B12 deficiency. When the disease remains undiagnosed and untreated, it may lead to neurological complications and even fatal anemia. CASE STUDY: We exemplify a non-vegetarian male adolescent case with the neurological symptoms such as bilateral leg weakness, unsteady gait, slurred speech, vertigo, slowed movement, lethargy, and impaired joint sensation.

Curcumin and linseed oil co-delivered in phospholipid nanoemulsions enhances the levels of docosahexaenoic acid in serum and tissue lipids of rats.

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is an important long chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) primarily found in marine fishes. The diets of vegetarian population do not contain preformed DHA, but they can derive it from shorter chain α-linolenic acid (ALA) found in plant oils. However, the conversion efficiency of ALA to DHA is minimal in human adults. This may cause insufficiency of DHA in the vegetarian population. Curcumin, diferuloyl methane found in the spice turmeric, has the potential to increase the formation of DHA from ALA by activating the enzymes FADS2 and elongase 2. The presen

Single nucleotide polymorphisms in homocysteine metabolism pathway genes: association of CHDH A119C and MTHFR C677T with hyperhomocysteinemia.

BACKGROUND: An elevated level of homocysteine (hyperhomocysteinemia) has been implicated as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Deficiency of dietary factors like vitamin B(12), folate, and genetic variations can cause hyperhomocysteinemia. The prevalence of hyperhomocysteinemia in the Indian population is likely to be high because most Indians adhere to a vegetarian diet, deficient in vitamin B(12). In the BACKGROUND: deficiency, variations in genes involved in homocysteine metabolism might have a greater impact on homocysteine levels. METHODS AND RESULTS: We genotyped 4

Endocrine disruptors in the workplace, hair spray, folate supplementation, and risk of hypospadias: case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Hypospadias is one of the most common urogenital congenital anomalies affecting baby boys. Prevalence estimates in Europe range from 4 to 24 per 10,000 births, depending on definition, with higher rates reported from the United States. Relatively little is known about potential risk factors, but a role for endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has been proposed. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to elucidate the risk of hypospadias associated with occupational exposure of the mother to endocrine-disruptor chemicals, use of folate supplementation during pregnancy, and vegetarianism. DESIGN:

Valproic Acid-Induced Hyperammonemic Encephalopathy in a Patient with Bipolar Disorder: A Case Report.

Valproic acid (VPA) is widely used to control various seizure disorders and psychiatric disorders. Valproic acid-induced hyperammonemic encephalopathy (VHE) is a rare but dangerous complication of VPA-induced toxicity. For this case report, several risk factors were identified, including young age, polytherapy regimens, VPA overdose, poor liver function, and carnitine deficiency. The detailed mechanisms of VHE remained unclear. Hyperammonemia may be caused by hypocarnitinemia, leading to imbalanced VPA metabolism. VHE may initially cause gastrointestinal symptoms, followed by a decreased level
