Prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of asymptomatic malaria in Sucre, Venezuela: a 2022 cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Despite a significant reduction in malaria cases in America, Venezuela has experienced a substantial increase between 2000 and 2019. Asymptomatic malaria, prevalent in both low- and high-endemic regions, poses a challenge due to the absence of clinical manifestations and often low parasitaemia. This study aims to determine the current prevalence of asymptomatic malaria in four rural communities of Sucre, the third most endemic state in the country. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted from October to December 2022 (high seasonality period). Individuals we

Seroprevalence of viral and bacterial pathogens among malaria patients in an endemic area of southern Venezuela.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains a leading public health problem worldwide. Co-infections with other pathogens complicate its diagnosis and may modify the disease's clinical course and management. Similarities in malaria clinical presentation with other infections and overlapping endemicity result in underdiagnosis of co-infections and increased mortality. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence of viral and bacterial pathogens among diagnosed malaria patients in malaria-endemic areas in Venezuela. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on malaria patients attending

First wave of COVID-19 in Venezuela: Epidemiological, clinical, and paraclinical characteristics of first cases.

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has particularly affected countries with weakened health services in Latin America, where proper patient management could be a critical step to address the epidemic. In this study, we aimed to characterize and identify which epidemiological, clinical, and paraclinical risk factors defined COVID-19 infection from the first confirmed cases through the first epidemic wave in Venezuela. A retrospective analysis of consecutive suspected cases of COVID-19 admitted to a sentinel hospital was carried out, including 576 patient cases subsequently confirm

Nifurtimox response of Trypanosoma cruzi isolates from an outbreak of Chagas disease in Caracas, Venezuela.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: In Venezuela, Chagas disease (ChD) is considered a serious health problem, with about 6 million people at risk; and acute outbreaks due to oral transmission of Chagas Disease (OChD) are becoming increasingly important. In 2007 there was a major outbreak of OChD and although patients from this episode were treated with nifurtimox (Lampit®-Bayer), about 70% therapeutic failure was registered. These results led us to examine whether parasite's drug susceptibility was related to this therapeutic failure. METHODS: The Trypanosoma cruzi parasites were isolated by haemocultu

Population Structure and Genetic Diversity among Isolates of Coccidioides posadasii in Venezuela and Surrounding Regions.

Coccidioides posadasii is a pathogenic fungus that causes coccidioidomycosis in many arid regions of the Americas. One of these regions is bordered by the Caribbean Sea, and the surrounding landscape may play an important role in the dispersion of C. posadasii across South America through southeastern Mexico, Honduras, Guatemala, and Venezuela. Comparative phylogenomic analyses of C. posadasii reveal that clinical strains from Venezuela are genetically distinct from the North American populations found in (i) Arizona and (ii) Texas, Mexico, and the rest of South America (TX/MX/SA). We find evi

Case Report: Molecular Confirmation of Lobomycosis in an Italian Traveler Acquired in the Amazon Region of Venezuela.

Lobomycosis is a chronic skin mycosis endemic in Amazon regions characterized by chronic nodular or keloidal lesions caused by Lacazia loboi, an uncultivable fungus. Imported cases in nonendemic countries are rare and diagnosed after years. We describe a case of lobomycosis in a healthy 55-year-old Italian traveler who had acquired the infection during 5-day-honeymoon in the Amazon region of Venezuela in 1999. Several weeks after return, he recalled pruritus and papular skin lesions on the left lower limb, subsequently evolving to a plaque-like lesion. Blastomycosis and cryptococcosis were hyp

A case of elongated styloid process in a modern-age skull from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela.

BACKGROUND: The styloid process (SP) arises from cartilage of the second branchial arch and tends to calcify during later life. If the length of the SP is more than 30 mm, it can be considered abnormally elongated. Clinical symptoms associated with elongation of this type are defined as Eagle's syndrome. The paper presents a case of an elongated SP in a modern skull from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, obtained from a series of skulls of African slaves kept at the Department of Anthropology, Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroclaw. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The skull belonged to a male individual, aged

Montelukast for the high impact of asthma exacerbations in Venezuela: a practical and valid approach for Latin America?

BACKGROUND: Asthma affects mainly Venezuela's urban and poor majority. Exacerbations bring about a high demand in health services, thus becoming a significant public health problem. In general, asthma control programs (GINA) with use of inhaled steroid medications have proven effective, although their implementation in real life remains cumbersome. Montelukast could be a useful and practical tool for these deprived socioeconomic sectors. METHODS: This real-life pilot study was conducted in a prospective, double blinded, placebo-controlled manner with randomized and parallel groups. Asthmatics

[Toxocara spp. and other helminths in squares and parks of Ciudad Bolívar, Bolivar State (Venezuela)].

INTRODUCTION: Visceral larva migrans, a syndrome observed in humans, is caused by larva of parasitic helminths, such as Toxocara spp., which usually infect dogs and cats. Among the risk factors involved in the incidence of this syndrome, the size of these animal populations is particularly important. Ciudad Bolívar (Bolivar State, Venezuela) is a city with a large dog population. This fact has led to an effort to determine of prevalence of eggs from Toxocara spp. and other helminths in public squares and parks in this city. METHODS: Twenty-five squares and parks were selected from five areas

Hypercalciuria is the main renal abnormality finding in Human Immunodeficiency Virus-infected children in Venezuela.

Kidney involvement in children with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection is increasing in prevalence in parallel with the longer survival of HIV-infected patients and the side-effects of new antiretroviral drugs. However, there are only a few reports describing renal tubular disorders in HIV+ children. This is a cross-sectional, case series study evaluating kidney disease in 26 Venezuelan HIV-infected children. The study cohort consisted of 15 girls and 11 boys, with a median age of 5.9 years (25-75th percentile: 3.6-7.8), who had been treated with antiretrovirals for 2.8 +/- 0.4 years

Epidemiological survey of histoplasmine and paracoccidioidine skin reactivity in an agricultural area in Bolívar state, Venezuela.

Paracoccidiodomycosis and histoplasmosis are endemic diseases in the south of Venezuela, representing a public health problem. Prevalence of Paracoccidiodes brasiliensis and Histoplasma capsulatum infections were estimated in Monte Ralo, a rural community area of Bolivar state using paracoccidiodine and histoplasmine skin tests. Paracoccidiodine was intradermically injected to 173 persons and readings were made at 24 and 48 h afterwards to 167 persons (97.85%). Reaction was positive in 8.5% (n = 14) at 24 h post-injection and 13.2% (n = 20) at 48 h. Farmers showed the higher percentage of posi

Feeding behavior of Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae), a putative vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Venezuela.

Lutzomyia pseudolongipalpis Arrivillaga & Feliciangeli is the first new sand fly species in the L. longipalpis species complex that has been formally described since it was separated by genetic as well as by morphological characters. It is the putative vector of the American visceral leishmaniasis in La Rinconada, Curarigua, a restricted focus in central western Venezuela. We investigated the feeding behavior of this species. The blood meals from 210 of 429 (48.9%) engorged females caught by CDC light traps were identified by a dot enzyme-linked immuno-absorbent assay using antisera against hu
