Wearable Real-Time Skateboard Trick Visualization and Its Community Perception.

Motion visualization is an attractive way to provide support for a range of recreational and competitive sports. In skateboarding, sensor technology in particular can help visualization systems capture the motion of athletes to provide relevant information to athletes, judges, and spectators. This article describes the authors' proposed application of a 9D inertial-magnetic measurement unit (IMMU) based real-time trick classification and visualization system. It also reports on a survey they conducted with skateboarders that asked about the usefulness, acceptance, and future ideas of such a sy

The prevalence of visual hallucinations in non-affective psychosis, and the role of perception and attention.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about visual hallucinations (VH) in psychosis. We investigated the prevalence and the role of bottom-up and top-down processing in VH. The prevailing view is that VH are probably related to altered top-down processing, rather than to distorted bottom-up processing. Conversely, VH in Parkinson's disease are associated with impaired visual perception and attention, as proposed by the Perception and Attention Deficit (PAD) model. Auditory hallucinations (AH) in psychosis, however, are thought to be related to increased attention. METHOD: Our retrospective database stu

Ventral aspect of the visual form pathway is not critical for the perception of biological motion.

Identifying the movements of those around us is fundamental for many daily activities, such as recognizing actions, detecting predators, and interacting with others socially. A key question concerns the neurobiological substrates underlying biological motion perception. Although the ventral "form" visual cortex is standardly activated by biologically moving stimuli, whether these activations are functionally critical for biological motion perception or are epiphenomenal remains unknown. To address this question, we examined whether focal damage to regions of the ventral visual cortex, resultin

SoftAR: visually manipulating haptic softness perception in spatial augmented reality.

We present SoftAR, a novel spatial augmented reality (AR) technique based on a pseudo-haptics mechanism that visually manipulates the sense of softness perceived by a user pushing a soft physical object. Considering the limitations of projection-based approaches that change only the surface appearance of a physical object, we propose two projection visual effects, i.e., surface deformation effect (SDE) and body appearance effect (BAE), on the basis of the observations of humans pushing physical objects. The SDE visualizes a two-dimensional deformation of the object surface with a controlled so

Cortical responses to object-motion and visually-induced self-motion perception.

We investigated the spatiotemporal cortical dynamics during the perception of object-motion and visually-induced self-motion perception in six normal subjects, using a 143-channel neuromagnetometer. Object-motion specific tasks evoked early transient activity over the right temporooccipital cortex, while self-motion perception, or vection, additionally was followed by sustained bilateral activity in the temporoparietal area. The specific signal distributions suggest to represent the different perceptual modes of object-motion and self-motion sensation.

Electrophysiological hemispheric asymmetries induced by parietal stimulation eliciting visual percepts.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to establish if the electrophysiological activity resulting from the direct stimulation of the intraparietal sulcus and eliciting visual percepts is hemispheric-specific. METHODS: We tested nineteen participants. Each received 360 TMS pulses at phosphene threshold intensity over right and left IPS while recording EEG. After each pulse, participants had to report if they had seen a phosphene. RESULTS: Parietal phosphene perception is associated with hemispheric-specific activations: phosphenes elicited by left TMS involve central and frontal electrodes at about 30 ms, and

Surgeon's perceptions on 3D visualization methods in parotid gland tumor surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Recent advances in high-resolution MRI and reconstruction techniques offer new opportunities to enhance visualization of the facial nerve and its relationship to parotid tumors in 3D models. The aim of this study is twofold: first, to assess the technical feasibility of generating three-dimensional printed anatomical models from MRI data. Second, to evaluate surgeons' perceptions of three different visualization methods (3D models on a 2D screen, 3D-printed models, and augmented reality (AR) holograms) to identify the most advantageous method for surgeons performing parotid gland

Visual perception and spatial transformation of the body in children and adolescents with brain tumor.

Representations of own and others' body play a crucial role in social interaction. While extensive knowledge has been gathered on the neuropsychological deficits affecting body representation in adult brain lesion patients, little is known on how acquired damage to a developing brain may affect this process. We tested it on pediatric brain tumor survivors, comparing the abilities of 30 children and adolescents (aged 8-16 years) surviving from a supratentorial tumor (STT) or an infratentorial tumor (ITT) in two different tasks of body representation. Thirty children with typical development (TD

The effect of target speed on perception of visual motion direction in a patient with akinetopsia.

Although much research has been devoted to the neural correlates of motion perception, the processing of speed of motion is still a topic of discussion. Apart from patient LM, no in-depth clinical research has been done in the past 20 years on this topic. In the present study, we investigated patient TD, who suffered from the rare disorder akinetopsia due to bilateral lesions of V5 after stroke. By means of a Random-Dot-Kinematogram (RDK) in which speed was varied systematically, it was found that TD was impaired in perceiving the direction of movement at speeds exceeding 9 deg/s. The Influence of Averageness on Adults' Perceptions of Attractiveness: The Effect of Early Visual Deprivation.

Adults who missed early visual input because of congenital cataracts later have deficits in many aspects of face processing. Here we investigated whether they make normal judgments of facial attractiveness. In particular, we studied whether their perceptions are affected normally by a face's proximity to the population mean, as is true of typically developing adults, who find average faces to be more attractive than most other faces. We compared the judgments of facial attractiveness of 12 cataract-reversal patients to norms established from 36 adults with normal vision. Participants viewed pa

Expanded Spatiotemporal Concept of Cortical Visual-Vestibular Interaction in Humans: A fMRI Study on Visually Induced Motion Perception.

PURPOSE: This high-resolution fast fMRI study explores visual-vestibular network interactions in expanded spatial and temporal detail. Under natural conditions coherent visual motion always occurs during self-motion. Technology applying coherent visual motion on stationary subjects creates visual-vestibular mismatch and allows investigation of system interplay in the MRI. In humans, the process minimizing the intersensory conflict was previously conceptualized as a categorical reciprocal upregulation of one (e.g., visual) and downregulation of the other system (e.g., vestibular), or vice versa

Cerebral Visual Impairment: which perceptive visual dysfunctions can be expected in children with brain damage? A systematic review.

The current definition of Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI) includes all visual dysfunctions caused by damage to, or malfunctioning of, the retrochiasmatic visual pathways in the absence of damage to the anterior visual pathways or any major ocular disease. CVI is diagnosed by exclusion and the existence of many different causes and symptoms make it an overall non-categorized group. To date, no discrimination is made within CVI based on types of perceptive visual dysfunctions. The aim of this review was to outline which perceptive visual dysfunctions are to be expected based on a number of etio

Visual perception of highly memorable images is mediated by a distributed network of ventral visual regions that enable a late memorability response.

Behavioral and neuroscience studies in humans and primates have shown that memorability is an intrinsic property of an image that predicts its strength of encoding into and retrieval from memory. While previous work has independently probed when or where this memorability effect may occur in the human brain, a description of its spatiotemporal dynamics is missing. Here, we used representational similarity analysis (RSA) to combine functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) with source-estimated magnetoencephalography (MEG) to simultaneously measure when and where the human cortex is sensitiv

Visual-motor integration, visual perception, and fine motor coordination in a population of children with high levels of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Visual-motor integration (VMI) skills are essential for successful academic performance, but to date no studies have assessed these skills in a population-based cohort of Australian Aboriginal children who, like many children in other remote, disadvantaged communities, consistently underperform academically. Furthermore, many children in remote areas of Australia have prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) and Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), which are often associated with VMI deficits. METHODS: VMI, visual perception, and fine motor coordination were assessed using The Beery-Buk

The Presence of Chemical Cues Likely Alters Motivation, Rather than Perception of Weak Visual Cues.

Animals encounter information simultaneously, combining input from multiple sensory systems before responding behaviorally. When cues in different sensory modalities interact, they may have direct impacts on sensory perception, allowing the animal to perceive stimuli that it would otherwise have missed, or the cues may instead impact motivation, tightly honing the animal's focus onto a stimulus or distracting it. Here, we investigated how interacting chemical and visual cues affected behavior in adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). Chemical cues can enhance the visual perception of zebrafish directl

Visual Deficits in Contrast and Depth Perception in Psychotic Disorders: Implications for a Neural Hierarchy.

BACKGROUND: A key challenge in understanding the neurobehavioral mechanisms of psychotic disorders (PDs) is identifying the level and interactions of the affected brain regions. The early visual system, with its hierarchical structure, offers a model for studying such mechanisms. Specifically, variations in visual contrast are detected as early as in the retina, whereas binocular depth perception emerges at a higher level, in the visual cortex. Comparing these processes within individuals can provide insights into the mechanisms and progression of perceptual deficits in PDs. METHODS: Psychoph

Utilization of passive visual perception task indetecting patients with major depressive disorder for active health.

Depression is a common emotional and mental disease. At present, doctors' diagnosis mainly depends on the existing evaluation scales and their accumulated experience, lack of objective electrophysiological quantitative evaluation indicators. This study explores the difference in event-related potential (ERP) between patients with depression and healthy controls under the stimulation of multi-dimensional tasks, extracts the characteristic data, and uses a t-test for statistical analysis to provide an objective evaluation index for the clinical diagnosis of depression.
