The Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) is a relatively new clinical method to quantify dysphonia severity. Since it partially relies on continuous speech, its performance may vary with voice-related phonetic differences and thus across languages. The present investigation therefore assessed the AVQI's performance in English, Dutch, German, and French. Fifty subjects were recorded reading sentences in the four languages, as well as producing a sustained vowel. These recordings were later edited to calculate the AVQI. The samples were also perceptually rated on overall dysphonia severity by thr

The hypothesis being tested in this study is that hypofractionated radiotherapy is well tolerated and not lower in terms of oncological outcome than conventional radiotherapy. Forty patients with histologically proven glottic cancer were included in the analysis. Twenty-two were treated by hypofractionated radiotherapy (3D-HFRT) (25 fractions of 2.4 Gy delivered daily to a total dose of 60 Gy). This group was retrospectively compared to 18 subjects who met the same inclusion criteria and who were treated with conventional radiotherapy (3D-CRT) (33 fractions of 2 Gy delivered daily to a total d

We conducted a study to examine six macroscopic features of vocal fold polyps and to investigate their influence on quality of voice. We retrospectively reviewed the records of 101 consecutive patients with vocal fold polyps who had undergone microlaryngeal surgery for polyp removal after conservative measures had failed. All patients had undergone videolaryngostroboscopy and perceptual and acoustic voice analyses. The six macroscopic features of these vocal fold polyps were morphologic type, location, position, shape, size, and the presence or absence of a reactive lesion on the contralateral

This study examined associations between perceived indoor air quality (PIAQ) and self-reported voice symptoms in teachers, with exploratory observations on man-made mineral fibers (MMMF). Forty-seven teachers underwent within-day assessments at the beginning (good PIAQ) and end (poor PIAQ) of a workday. Clinical voice status was evaluated with laryngoscopy and the Grade-Roughness-Breathiness-Strain (GRBS) scale. Self-reported symptoms were measured with a 100 mm Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and the 30-item Voice Handicap Index (VHI). Classroom settled dust was collected on gelatin tape and analyz

PURPOSE: This study compares the Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI-3) with machine learning (ML) models to evaluate their clinical utility for estimating voice quality.
METHODS: Audio from 187 American English speakers (49 healthy, 138 with voice disorders) was rated for overall voice quality by six voice specialists. AVQI-3 and its six acoustic parameters were extracted, and these parameters were used to train 14 ML models (linear, curvilinear, nonlinear). Correlations and classification accuracy (normal-mild vs. moderate-severe) were compared against perceptual ratings as ground truth.

PURPOSE: Bilateral vocal fold paralysis (BVFP) is a severe disorder that can result in respiratory, swallowing, and voice-related problems. Most surgical treatments do not restore laryngeal function and often need to compromise voice quality to preserve respiratory function. Laryngeal reinnervation (LR) may offer a solution to this problem, but literature on longitudinal outcomes of this procedure is scarce. This study aims to report the longitudinal vocal outcomes of BVFP after LR and subsequent voice therapy.
METHOD: The case of a 23-year-old man with BVFP after a traumatic dissection of bo

BACKGROUND: Acoustic Voice Quality Index (AVQI) has emerged in the recent past as a robust multiparametric voice quality evaluation tool. Two versions of AVQI derived using the program PRAAT have found extensive clinical and research applications. These versions have been validated in several languages around the world. However, no research reports are available on validation of AVQI in the South Indian population. Further, studies comparing the performance of the two versions of AVQI are limited in the literature.
OBJECTIVES: This study was designed to validate and compare the two versions o
