Voice disorders are the most common communication disorder across the life span, affecting more than five million school-aged children annually in the United States alone. Although such disorders are commonly associated with benign pathology, medically malicious conditions cannot be ruled out without proper medical examination by an otolaryngologist. Many children with voice disorders are otherwise healthy. However, some are not. Moreover, children with voice problems of any origin often experience distinctly negative consequences in quality of life and academic participation as a result of th

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review recent research and clinical studies pertaining to the nature, diagnosis, and treatment of speech and swallowing disorders in Parkinson disease.
RECENT FINDINGS: Although some studies indicate improvement in voice and speech with dopamine therapy and deep brain stimulation of the subthalamic nucleus, others show minimal or adverse effects. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation of the mouth motor cortex and injection of collagen in the vocal folds have preliminary data supporting improvement in phonation in people with Parkinson disease. Treatments focusing

Ten male-to-female transsexuals participated in five sessions of oral resonance voice therapy targeting lip spreading and forward tongue carriage. Acoustic analysis of recordings made pre- and posttherapy found that participant formant frequency values (F1, F2, and F3, from the vowels /a/, /i/, and /mho/), as well as fundamental frequency (F0), underwent a general increase posttherapy. F3 values, in particular, increased significantly posttreatment. Trends in listener ratings of these recordings showed that the majority of participants were perceived to sound more feminine following treatment.

The introduction, in the late 70s, of the first digital spectrograph (DSP Sonograph) by Kay Elemetrics has improved the possibilities of spectroacoustic voice analysis in the clinical field. Thanks to the marketing, in 1993, of the Multi Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP) advanced system, it is now possible to analyse 33 quantitative voice parameters which, in turn, allow evaluation of fundamental frequency, amplitude and spectral energy balance and the presence of any sonority gap and diplophony. Despite its potentials, the above-mentioned system is not widely used yet, partly on account of the

During voice evaluation and treatment it is customary for clinicians to elicit samples of the vowel /a/ from clients using various elicitation techniques. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of four commonly used stimulation tasks on the laryngeal mechanism. Eleven female singing students, studying at a university music school, served as subjects for the study. The subjects phonated the vowel /a/ using 4 vocal stimulation techniques: yawn-sigh, gentle onset, focus, and the use of the voiceless fricative. Videoendoscopic and acoustic evaluations of their productions were done.

There is a commonly perceived difference in the sound produced in the approximate range D4-D5 by female singers in the western opera and concert tradition, on the one hand, and certain other styles, including rock, pop, folk, and some Broadway musicals, on the other. The term "belting" is sometimes used to refer to at least one approach to such "nonclassical" singing. In this study, based on spectrographic, electroglottographic, and sub- and supraglottal pressure measurements on representative voices of the "operatic" and "nonclassical" tradition, acoustic and laryngeal differences between the

According to the laryngeal clinical findings, figures making up a scale were assigned to vocally trained and vocally untrained persons suffering from different types of functional dysphonia. The different types of dysphonia--from the manifested hypofunctional to the extreme hyperfunctional dysphonia--were classified by means of this scale. Besides, the subjects' phonetograms were measured and approximated by three ellipses, what rendered possible the definition of phonetogram parameters. The combining of selected phonetogram parameters to linear combinations served the purpose of a phonetograp

Evidence supports the need for a multiparametric voice assessment incorporating objective and subjective assessment types. European guidelines and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association recommend a comprehensive voice assessment protocol; however, currently in Ireland, no national standards exist. This study investigates voice assessment practices of speech and language therapists (SLTs) in Ireland, with a particular interest in the use of objective instrumentation. It further elucidates what may act as barriers to the use of instrumental techniques, which has not been addressed in e

Deep learning (DL) techniques are becoming more popular for diagnosing Parkinson's disease (PD) because they offer non-invasive and easily accessible tools. By using advanced data analysis, these methods improve early detection and diagnosis, which is crucial for managing the disease effectively. This study explores end-to-end DL architectures, such as convolutional neural networks and transformers, for diagnosing PD using self-reported voice data collected via smartphones in everyday settings. Transfer learning was applied by starting with models pre-trained on large datasets from the image a

BACKGROUND: SPEAK OUT! has been shown to enhance various aspects of voice such as intensity, prosody, voice quality and perception of voice. However, their impacts on expiration and communication effectiveness have not yet been evaluated. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Hybrid SPEAK OUT! method on aerodynamic measurements and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD).
METHODS: This study included 157 participants with PD who underwent an intensive 8-week multidisciplinary treatment program. The Hybrid SPEAK OUT! method consist

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this research was to evaluate the immediate impact of vocal demand on musical theater singers in Brazil and to explore its relationship with the presence of voice symptoms.
METHOD: A total of 264 musical theater singers participated in this research. The group was formed by 126 women and 138 men, with a mean age of 33. All of them answered two questionnaires immediately after a show: (1) demographic data, vocal self-assessment, and a voice symptoms/signs list; and (2) Evaluation of the Ability to Sing Easily (EASE) Scale, translated and culturally adapted to Brazilia

Sulcus vocalis is a furrow in the mucosa of the vocal folds that causes glottic insufficiency, irregular vibrations, and a distinctive dysphonia of variable severity. Treatment of sulcus vocalis needs to achieve anatomical and functional improvements that satisfy the behavior of the larynx and vocal quality. We suggest a combined approach, which includes vocal fold mucosal surgery through a technique called slicing mucosa, followed by intensive vocal rehabilitation. The aim of the surgery is to detach the mucosa of the sulcus and to interrupt the longitudinal fibrotic tension lines. The result

An automated computer system was used to measure changes in vocal quality resulting from laryngeal surgery. Five acoustic parameters were computed and seven listeners made judgments on vowel samples recorded before and after surgery from 37 patients. Presurgery and postsurgery changes in the five acoustic measures were compared with the perception of change in vocal harshness. A multiple regression analysis showed that four of the five acoustic measures accounted for a large amount of the variance in the judgment of change of voice quality following surgery. The measures may provide a quick an

Bilateral vocal fold paralysis presents as their complete or partial immobilisation. The median or paramedian position of vocal folds contributes to the narrowing of the airway at the level of the glottis and manifests as inspiratory dyspnoea. For many years iatrogenic injury of recurrent laryngeal nerves during thyroidectomy has been viewed as the most common underlying reason. It is very often a lifethreatening condition requiring not only corticosteroid administration and intubation, which only constitute a short-term symptomatic therapy, but also surgical intervention, including tracheosto
