Functional outcome at school age of preterm infants with periventricular hemorrhagic infarction.

OBJECTIVES: Our objective was to determine motor, cognitive, and behavioral outcome at school age in preterm children with periventricular hemorrhagic infarction and to identify cerebral risk factors for adverse outcome. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study of all preterm infants who were <37 weeks' gestation, had periventricular hemorrhagic infarction, and were admitted between 1995 and 2003. Ultrasound scans were reviewed for characteristics of periventricular hemorrhagic infarction and other cerebral abnormalities. At 4 to 12 years of age, motor outcome was assessed by the Gross Mo

Intellectual, neuropsychological, and behavioral functioning in children with tetralogy of Fallot.

OBJECTIVE: Although it is known that pediatric cardiac surgery holds risks for later development, few studies investigated the long-term development in children with tetralogy of Fallot. The purpose of this study was to define their intellectual capacities, neuropsychological profile, and behavioral functioning 6 to 12 years postoperatively. METHODS: Patients (n = 18; age, 8 years, 3 months +/- 1 year, 6 months) were examined with a short-form intelligence scale (Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, 3rd edition, Dutch version) and a neuropsychological assessment battery (NEPSY). Their pa

A machine learning-based linguistic battery for diagnosing mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease.

There is a limited evaluation of an independent linguistic battery for early diagnosis of Mild Cognitive Impairment due to Alzheimer's disease (MCI-AD). We hypothesized that an independent linguistic battery comprising of only the language components or subtests of popular test batteries could give a better clinical diagnosis for MCI-AD compared to using an exhaustive battery of tests. As such, we combined multiple clinical datasets and performed Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) to extract the underlying linguistic constructs from a combination of the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Al

The intellectual profile of pediatric patients with posterior cortex epilepsy.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive functioning in epileptic syndromes has been widely explored in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), but few studies have investigated the neuropsychological profile in posterior cortex epilepsy (PCE). In this study, we investigated the presurgical intellectual profile of children and adolescents with drug-resistant PCE. METHODS: Children and adolescents diagnosed with PCE (n = 25) participated in this study. The data were obtained from medical records, with assessments carried out between the years 2003 and 2019. To compare the intellectual profile, we also includ

Is cognitive impairment following early life stress in severe mental disorders based on specific or general cognitive functioning?

Schizophrenia spectrum and bipolar disorder are characterized by high levels of childhood trauma as well as of cognitive dysfunction. Our aim is to investigate the association between these two factors in the largest study in the literature so far. A total of 406 patients with schizophrenia spectrum- or bipolar disorders were recruited from a catchment area based organization in Oslo, Norway. Information about early life stress was obtained using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). Cognitive function was assessed through a comprehensive and standardized neuropsychological test battery. P

Predictors of response to exposure and response prevention-based cognitive behavioral therapy for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), which includes exposure and response prevention (ERP), is effective in improving symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, whether poor cognitive functions and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) traits affect the therapeutic response of patients with OCD to ERP-based CBT remains unclear. This study aimed to identify factors predictive of the therapeutic response of Japanese patients with OCD to ERP-based CBT. METHODS: Forty-two Japanese outpatients with OCD were assessed using the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-III (WAIS-III), Yal

Singing for memory: neural and cognitive effects of a choral intervention in older adults.

INTRODUCTION: Lifestyle factors are important predictors of successful aging, and targeted interventions could be key to mitigating the negative effects of aging. Episodic memory is of particular interest as it is notably sensitive to aging. Given the social, intellectual, and physical stimulation that choral singing provides, along with the enjoyment it offers which is a strong motivator, it has been suggested as a particularly promising intervention to promote successful aging. METHOD: Thirty-four participants, aged 65 to 75 at recruitment, took part in a choral singing intervention involvi

Characteristics of the memory loss of a patient with Wernicke-Korsakoff's syndrome without alcoholism.

The memory loss in alcoholic Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome has been well characterized. However, it has been suggested that some of the neuropsychological defects seen in these patients are due to frontal lobe dysfunction resulting from chronic alcohol abuse. The present report details the nature and extent of the amnesia in a Wernicke-Korsakoff patient who did not have a history of alcoholism. In spite of her normal performance on measures of frontal lobe function, this patient showed many characteristics similar to those seen in alcoholic Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome including a graded loss of

Nomograms to Predict Verbal Memory Decline After Temporal Lobe Resection in Adults With Epilepsy.

OBJECTIVE: To develop and externally validate models to predict the probability of postoperative verbal memory decline in adults after temporal lobe resection (TLR) for epilepsy using easily accessible preoperative clinical predictors. METHODS: Multivariable models were developed to predict delayed verbal memory outcome on 3 commonly used measures: Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test (RAVLT) and Logical Memory (LM) and Verbal Paired Associates (VPA) subtests from Wechsler Memory Scale-Third Edition. With the use of the Harrell step-down procedure for variable selection, models were developed in

A syndrome of early recognition of occult hydrocephalus and cerebral atrophy.

A clinical and neuropsychological syndrome for early recognition of occult hydrocephalus and cerebral atrophy is described. Five illustrative patients are reported. The main features of the syndrome are (i) subjective non-specific complaints (headaches, depression and loss of memory); (ii) the tonic foot response of the sole and the grasp reflex of the foot in the absence of the grasp reflex of the hand; (iii) attacks of sudden and transient loss of muscle tone in both lower limbs leading to falls without warning while standing or while walking. These attacks indistinguishable from drop-attack

Meta-Analysis of Cognitive Performance in Neurodevelopmental Disorders during Adulthood: Comparisons between Autism Spectrum Disorder and Schizophrenia on the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scales.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and schizophrenia are neurodevelopmental disorders which show substantial cognitive heterogeneity in adulthood, yet it remains unclear whether cognitive profiles may overlap across these diagnoses. Thus, the aim of this review was to summarize comparisons between ASD and schizophrenia on nonsocial cognition in adulthood. To minimize between-study heterogeneity in a relatively small literature, subtest scaled scores from the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale were compared between ASD (N=190) and schizophrenia (N=260) in six studies comprising a total of 450 partic

Metabolic Syndrome and Cognitive Function in Midlife.

OBJECTIVE: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of cardiovascular risk factors associated with cognitive decline. We investigated the relationship between MetS and cognition in middle-aged adults. We hypothesized that higher numbers of MetS components will relate to poorer performance on executive function (EF) tasks as frontal lobe regions critical to EF are particularly vulnerable to cardiovascular disease. METHODS: 197 adults (ages 40-60) participated. MetS was evaluated using established criteria. Composite scores for cognitive domains were computed as follows: Global cognitive function

Plasma apolipoproteins and memory function in alcohol use disorder: Findings in male C57BL/6J mice and men suggest a role for APOAI.

BACKGROUND: Memory impairment is frequent among alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients, and we lack specific biomarkers to detect it. Certain apolipoproteins were linked to cognition, and carrying the APOE4 gene is a vulnerability factor to memory impairment in AUD patients. We explored memory deficits in alcohol-dependent male mice and humans versus controls, and their relationship to Apolipoprotein AI (APOAI), apolipoprotein B (APOB), and apolipoprotein E (APOE) plasma levels. METHODS: Male C57BL/6J mice underwent voluntary alcohol drinking (two-bottle choice, 2BC) and chronic intermittent eth

Sociodemographic risk factors and WISC-IV cognitive profile in children with specific learning disorder: a case-control study.

Specific learning disorder (SLD) stems from genetic, environmental, and cognitive factors; however, their relative contributions and the diagnostic validity of cognitive measures remain unclear. This case-control study compared 35 children aged 8-12 diagnosed with SLD according to DSM-5-TR criteria with 35 healthy controls of comparable age and sex. Sociodemographic characteristics, developmental history, and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-IV (WISC-IV) profiles were examined using t-tests, chi-square analysis, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, and Firth-penalized logi

Characterizing the neurocognitive profiles of children with moyamoya disease using the Das Naglieri cognitive assessment system.

Although cognitive impairment is well-documented in children with moyamoya disease (MMD), selective decline in specific neurocognitive domains remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to characterize the neurocognitive profile of children with MMD using the Das Naglieri Cognitive Assessment System (CAS) and the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (WISC-IV). We analyzed the neurocognitive data of 30 children (median age, 7 years) with MMD who were assessed with the CAS and the WISC-IV before surgery. We focused on the comparison of standard scores and intraindiv

Synergistic effect of Tai Chi and transcranial direct current stimulation on memory function in patients with mild cognitive impairment: study protocol for a 2×2 factorial randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Interventions at the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) stage prevent or delay the progression of cognitive decline. In recent years, several studies have shown that physical exercise combined with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) effectively delays the disease and promotes cognitive recovery in patients with MCI. This study aims to determine whether Tai Chi (TC) combined with tDCS can significantly improve memory in patients with MCI compared with TC or tDCS alone. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This clinical trial will use a 2×2 factorial design, enrolling 128 community-dwel
