A qualitative exploration of the experiences of people living alone and receiving community-based palliative care.

BACKGROUND: It is projected that in Australia there will be between 28% and 48% of palliative care patients living alone by the year 2031. As such, it will become increasingly important to provide appropriate home-based care in order to support these patients to be cared for and die at home. AIM: This study explored the experiences of community-based palliative care cancer patients who live alone without a caregiver and what psychosocial issues they face. METHODS: Face-to-face semistructured interviews were conducted with eight participants, and constant comparison was used for the analysis.

"It suits my needs": Self-employed individuals with psychiatric disabilities and small businesses.

OBJECTIVE: Small business is a favorably regarded institution in America. Given employment disparities among individuals with psychiatric disabilities compared to other workers, self-employment has potential to promote career development and community integration. However, little is known about what has helped or hindered current small business owners with psychiatric disabilities. This exploratory study identified characteristics of individuals' work and disability histories, as well as business characteristics, that can inform policy and practice development in support of disability-owned sm

Development and Validation of a Decent Work Scale for Hospital Nurses: An Experiential Perspective on Working Conditions.

Background/Objectives: Nursing is characterised by demanding working conditions, including long working hours and staffing shortages. Although Decent Work (DW) has been proposed as a framework for improving labour conditions, existing measures do not adequately capture how these conditions are experienced in practice. This study aimed to develop and validate the Decent Work Scale for Hospital Nurses (DWS-N), conceptualising DW as the experiential realisation of structural labour conditions. Methods: A multi-phase methodological design was employed. In Phase 1, 184 items were generated through

The Experiences of Nurses as Double-Duty Caregivers for a Family Member at the End of Life: Interpretive Description.

Increasing numbers of individuals with complex, advanced illnesses are living longer and being cared for in the home by family members. As a result, family caregivers often experience physical, emotional, psychological, and social distress. A unique subset of this population are nurses who find themselves providing care in both their family lives and work lives, a phenomenon known as "double-duty caregiving." This study explored the experiences of nurses providing end-of-life care for family members while continuing to work as a nurse and the consequences of this experience. A qualitative desi

High-Commitment Human Resource Management and Care Workers' Attitudes and Performance Through a Sustainable-Careers Lens: A Multilevel Analysis in Japan.

In aging societies, securing a stable long-term care workforce is a priority, yet workforce policies centered on financial incentives have demonstrated limited effectiveness. Drawing on the sustainable-careers perspective as an analytical lens, this study re-examines high-commitment human resource management (HCHRM), grounded in ability-motivation-opportunity (AMO) theory, by investigating how it relates to the work attitudes and work role performance of long-term care workers, with work-life balance (WLB) support incorporated as an opportunity-enhancing practice. Data of 875 full-time care wo

Strategies for Self-Care and Support During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Findings From an International Survey of Social Workers in Palliative Care.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused many hospice and palliative care services to reconfigure existing services and invent new ones using technology and remote working. Workloads increased in response to demand and healthcare professionals risked professional burnout, stress and emotional exhaustion. The aim of this study was to conduct secondary analysis of international survey data from palliative care social workers regarding the support received during the COVID-19 pandemic. A cross-sectional online survey-based design was used. Social workers in palliative care were invited to participate via mem

Helpful elements in a brief work-oriented intervention targeting musculoskeletal and mental health literacy.

Musculoskeletal and mental health complaints are common in the general population and frequent reasons for healthcare utilization and work absence. Illness perceptions, coping expectancies, rumination and self-stigma are important factors in the management of these health complaints and factors closely linked to health literacy (HL). The aims of the study were to identify helpful elements in a brief intervention (BI) targeting HL regarding common musculoskeletal and mental health complaints and to identify patient perceptions of how the intervention was helpful and whether it affected their su

Mental health and social relationships shape the work-from-home experience: lessons from COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The great "work-from-home experiment" prompted by the pandemic has left an indelible mark both at the individual level-shaping expectations around life, work, and career-and at the organizational level. Evidence suggests that organizational success and performance are highly dependent on employee health and well-being, which contribute to higher productivity and engagement. AIM: This study aims to (1) examine the association between changes in depression severity and the work experience evaluation given by the staff of a large Italian research institute at the end of the forced te

Teleworking and its impact on health and well-being: a systematic review of longitudinal studies considering the psychosocial work environment (2005-2024).

BACKGROUND: Teleworking expanded dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic and is expected to remain widespread. While it offers benefits such as greater autonomy and improved work-life balance, teleworking also poses challenges related to workload, social isolation, and blurred boundaries between work and personal life, shaped by the psychosocial work environment. These contrasting effects raise questions about whether teleworking promotes or undermines workers' health. This systematic review synthesizes longitudinal evidence on the relationship between teleworking and workers' health, with p

Resident physician burnout: insights from a Canadian multispecialty survey.

BACKGROUND: Burnout results from chronic exposure to stress: comprising emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalisation (DP) and a reduced sense of personal achievement (PA). Only a few studies have examined burnout in Canadian residents, and no multispecialty studies using the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Health Sciences Survey (MBI-HSS) exist. The purpose of our study is to identify burnout prevalence, contributory factors and solutions. METHODS: A prospective 62-item survey, including the 22-item MBI-HSS, was sent to all Alberta residents, with a resident population of 1745. The association betw

"If I Accomplish Nothing Else but Hope, That Will be Enough": The Ethics and Morality of Market-Based Hope in Illness Entrepreneurship.

How do entrepreneurs embody and enact hope as a motor for ethical agency-agency that builds one's own and others' capacities and capabilities to overcome a painful present? This study puts hope at the center of theorizing around the activities of entrepreneurs who leverage it both as a way to sketch a new life for themselves and to sell it to others. Through the case of illness entrepreneurs-recovery coaches for those suffering from chronic illnesses-we observe the moral struggles involved when hope becomes framed within the logic of the market. Recovery coaches at once embody hope (as formerl

Exploring the Italian Experience with Long-Acting Buprenorphine Formulations (LAIB) for the Treatment of Opioid Use Disorder: A Series of Narrative Interviews.

Long-Acting Buprenorphine Formulations (LAIB) have emerged as an alternative pharmacological approach for opioid use disorder, offering potential benefits extending beyond clinical stabilisation. Narrative medicine provides a unique approach to understand patients' perspectives and experiences with sublingual buprenorphine and LAIB dispensed to fourteen patients across different Italian Addiction Services, examining how they impact the emotional, social, and motivational dimensions of recovery. Narratives were analysed by thematic content across eight domains: dependence on daily treatment reg

Teaching family-centered perinatal care in family medicine, Part 2.

Pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, and infant care are a continuum in the family life cycle for which the family physician is especially qualified to provide primary, comprehensive care. The purpose of this paper is to document and share the controversies, wisdom, and knowledge about caring for women and their families before, during, and after pregnancy. Family physicians can be leaders in developing an appropriate perinatal care system for the community. The level of care the family physician chooses to provide is discretionary. However, the family physician should be invested in ensuring th
