An AI system to help scientists write expert-level empirical software.

The cycle of scientific discovery is frequently bottlenecked by the slow, manual creation of software to support computational experiments1. To address this, we present Empirical Research Assistance (ERA), an artificial intelligence (AI) system that creates expert-level scientific software whose goal is to maximize a quality metric. The system uses a large language model (LLM) and tree search2 to systematically improve the quality metric and intelligently navigate the large space of possible solutions. ERA achieves expert-level results when it explores and integrates complex research ideas fro

An Underused Competence: Clinical Pharmacists' Experiences of Writing Referrals in Transitions of Care.

Older people are at increased risk of medication-related problems, which may be identified by clinical pharmacists during hospital medication reviews. Some problems are better managed in primary care, where follow-up is possible. Medication-related communication by pharmacists may improve information transfer in care transitions, but this practice remains uncommon in Sweden. This qualitative study explored clinical pharmacists' experiences and perceptions of writing referrals to primary care. Data were collected through four focus groups and three supplementary interviews with 19 clinical phar

Reading the Writing on the Wall: Resident Evaluation Measures as Predictors of Performance in Practice.

BACKGROUND: Identifying orthopaedic surgery residents at risk of future professional or practice-related difficulties remains challenging. While knowledge-based assessments such as the Orthopaedic In-Training Examination (OITE) are widely used, they incompletely capture behavioral and professionalism concerns that often underlie significant problems during residency and subsequent practice. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, single-institution cohort study of 119 orthopaedic surgery residents who entered training between 1978 and 2013. Institutional resident files were reviewed for docume

Reading and Writing Profiles in Twice-Exceptional Adolescents with Intellectual Giftedness and Dyslexia.

This study provides empirical evidence on the reading and writing profile of adolescents with twice-exceptionality (2e), specifically those presenting both intellectual giftedness and dyslexia (G-D). Using a quantitative approach, the performance of the G-D group was compared with that of gifted students without dyslexia (G) and students with dyslexia without intellectual giftedness (D) in a sample of Spanish secondary school students. The results indicate that G-D adolescents exhibit a heterogeneous performance pattern across literacy-related measures, characterized by relative weaknesses in

Views and experiences on writing certificates for assisted dying: interviews with Swedish physicians.

INTRO: The only legal option for Swedish patients who desire assisted dying (AD) is to travel to Switzerland. To access AD there, patients need medical certificates from their physicians. However, Swedish healthcare law and professional ethical guidelines lack clear directives on how physicians should handle such requests, which may place physicians in perceived ethical and professional dilemmas. How physicians reason about their professional involvement in writing such certificates has previously not been studied in a Swedish context. The aim of this study was to describe and explore physicia

Reading and writing in English as a foreign language: Spanish children with and without dyslexia.

In a world where English reigns as the most spoken language, proficiency in English literacy is indispensable. Within this context, it is imperative to acknowledge the significant hurdles encountered by Spanish children in mastering English, particularly in reading and writing. The learning process is intricate, influenced by various factors such as orthographic and phonological differences between languages and the depth of the orthographic system. This chapter explores the critical importance of English literacy for Spanish children, both typically developing and with dyslexia, as they learn

A Goal-Writing Framework for Motor-Based Intervention for Childhood Apraxia of Speech.

PURPOSE: There are multiple frameworks for goal writing that are applicable to the practice of speech-language pathology. Motor-based speech disorders are a subset of speech sound disorders that are thought to require specific elements of intervention that are typically not addressed in the traditional frameworks used in the clinical setting. The purpose of this tutorial is to review general approaches of goal writing and suggest additional elements that may be used to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of treatment for childhood motor speech disorders, specifically childhood apraxia of

Radiography education in 2022 and beyond - Writing the history of the present: A narrative review.

OBJECTIVES: The COVID-19 pandemic had a major effect on teaching and learning. This study aimed to describe a range of teaching, learning, and assessment strategies related to radiography education which have become more common due to the pandemic through a narrative literature review. KEY FINDINGS: Educational change in radiography was accelerated by the disruption caused by the pandemic. Changes included the site and mode of teaching and conducting of assessment. While some of the digital transformation trends were introduced before the pandemic, others were further amplified during this pe

Copy Skills and Writing Abilities in Children With and Without Specific Learning Disabilities.

Copying a text quickly and accurately is important both in school and in daily life. However, this skill has never been systematically studied, either in children with typical development (TD) or in children with specific learning disabilities (SLD). The aim of this research was to study the features of a copy task and its relationship with other writing tasks. For this purpose, 674 children with TD and 65 children with SLD from Grades 6 through 8 in Italy were tested with a copy task and other writing assessment tasks, measuring three aspects of writing: handwriting speed, spelling, and expre

Evidence of Altered Functional Connectivity at Rest in the Writing Network of Children with Dyslexia.

AIM: Handwriting abilities in children with dyslexia (DYS) are not well documented in the current literature, and the presence of graphomotor impairment in addition to spelling impairment in dyslexia is controversial. Using resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC), the present study aims to answer the following question: are there markers of graphomotor impairment at rest in DYS children? METHOD: The participants were children with DYS and typically developing (TD) children (n = 32) from French-speaking primary schools (Mage = 9.3 years). The behavioural evaluation consisted of spelling a

[Writing in prodromal and mild dementia with Lewy bodies: an exploratory and preliminary study].

UNLABELLED: Dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB) is the second most common form of dementia in elderly patients. In the early stages, it shares many clinical and pathological features with other neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's disease, making early and accurate diagnosis challenging. While written production has been shown to be sensible to pathological aging even before the onset of spoken language disorders, no research has been conducted on this aspect in DLB patients, particularly at the prodromal or mild stages. OBJECTIVE: In order to better characterize their cognitive profiles,

The feasibility of the draw-and-write technique in exploring the resilience of children orphaned by AIDS.

Worldwide, researchers routinely study children indirectly through adults who act as proxies for such children. The call for researchers to rather study children directly and adopt less intrusive child-friendly methodologies has become louder. The draw-and-write technique is regarded as a less intrusive child-friendly method of collecting data that can be used for this purpose. This paper reports the findings of a qualitative study that sought to establish the feasibility of the draw-and-write technique in exploring the resilience of children orphaned by AIDS. This study involved a convenience

The impact of developmental dyslexia and dysgraphia on movement production during word writing.

This study investigated how deficits in orthographic processing affect movement production during word writing. Children with dyslexia and dysgraphia wrote words and pseudo-words on a digitizer. The words were orthographically regular and irregular of varying frequency. The group analysis revealed that writing irregular words and pseudo-words increased movement duration and dysfluency. This indicates that the spelling processes were active while the children were writing the words. The impact of these spelling processes was stronger for the children with dyslexia and dysgraphia. The analysis o
