Bioaccessibility of carotenoids, tocochromanols, and iron from common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) landraces.

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are among the most important legumes for human nutrition. The aim of the present study was to characterize the composition and in vitro bioaccessibility of tocochromanols, carotenoids, and iron from 14 different landraces and 2 commercial common bean varieties. Phytic acid, dietary fiber, and total (poly)phenolic content were determined as factors that can modify the bioaccessibility of the studied compounds. Two carotenoids were identified, namely lutein (4.6-315 ng/g) and zeaxanthin (12.2-363 ng/g), while two tocochromanols were identified, namely γ-tocop

Revisiting carotenoids as dietary antioxidants for human health and disease prevention.

Humans are unique indiscriminate carotenoid accumulators, so the human body accumulates a wide range of dietary carotenoids of different types and to varying concentrations. Carotenoids were once recognized as physiological antioxidants because of their ability to quench singlet molecular oxygen (1O2). In the 1990s, large-scale intervention studies failed to demonstrate that supplementary β-carotene intake reduces the incidence of lung cancer, although its antioxidant activity was supposed to contribute to the prevention of oxidative stress-induced carcinogenesis. Nevertheless, the antioxidant

Smoking, dietary factors and major age-related eye disorders: an umbrella review of systematic reviews and meta-analyses.

BACKGROUND: There is accumulating evidence of the associations between age-related eye diseases (AREDs) and smoking or dietary factors. We aimed to provide an umbrella review of the published literature pertaining to smoking or dietary intake as risk factors for major AREDs including cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic retinopathy. METHODS: We searched for pertinent systematic reviews or meta-analyses in PubMed and Web of Science until 16 April 2022. We reperformed the meta-analysis of each association using random effects models. The heterogeneity and 95%

Sustaining an ageing population: the role of micronutrients in frailty and cognitive impairment.

Age-related frailty and cognitive decline are complex multidimensional conditions that significantly impact the ability of older adults to sustain functional capacity and independence. While underlying causes remain poorly understood, nutrition continually emerges as one associated risk element. Many studies have addressed the importance of adequate nutrition in delaying the onset of these conditions, but the specific role of micronutrients is not well established. The consideration of pre-frailty as an outcome variable is also limited in the current literature. In this review, we focus on the

Assessment of dietary carotenoid intake and biologic measurement of exposure in humans.

Carotenoids are a diverse family of phytochemicals with over 1000 different carotenoids present in nature. A human diet containing a variety of plant foods typically includes approximately 50 different carotenoids, although six (α-carotene, β-carotene, β-cryptoxanthin, lycopene, lutein, and zeaxanthin) comprise over 90% of total carotenoid intake. Most carotenoids do not meet the definition of a nutrient, but several can be cleaved to form vitamin A and are important contributors to vitamin A nutriture and prevention of vitamin A deficiency. Large epidemiologic studies suggest that diets rich

Application of Dried Blood Spot Cards combined with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to determine eight fat-soluble micronutrients in human blood.

The analysis of the fat-soluble vitamins A and E and lipid micronutrients in blood, such as carotenoids, is an important parameter to monitor the micronutrient status in humans. Although the potential of dried blood spot (DBS) cards, the use of this technique for blood sampling and subsequent analysis of these fat-soluble micronutrients has been poorly or not studied. An analytical method based on DBS cards (FTA® DMPK-A) combined with liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) has been developed and validated for the determination of carotenoids (lutein, zeaxanthin, β

Egg Intake in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are often instructed to adhere to a renal-specific diet depending on the severity and stage of their kidney disease. The prescribed diet may limit certain nutrients, such as phosphorus and potassium, or encourage the consumption of others, such as high biological value (HBV) proteins. Eggs are an inexpensive, easily available and high-quality source of protein, as well as a rich source of leucine, an essential amino acid that plays a role in muscle protein synthesis. However, egg yolk is a concentrated source of both phosphorus and the trimethylamine

Ultraviolet-B protection of ascorbate and tocopherol in plants related with their function on the stability on carotenoid and phenylpropanoid compounds.

Ascorbate and tocopherol are important hydrophilic or lipophilic antioxidants in plants, while their crucial roles in the antioxidant defense system under ultraviolet B radiation were not well understood. The mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana deficient in ascorbate (vtc1 and vtc2) or tocopherol (vte1) were used to analyze their physiological, biochemical and metabolic change in responses to Ultraviolet B radiation. Results showed that loss of either ascorbate or tocopherol caused reduction in phenylpropanoid and flavonol glycosides compounds, as well as reduction in superoxide dismutase activity

Interactive effects of high irradiance and moderate heat on photosynthesis, pigments, and tocopherol in the tree-fern Dicksonia antarctica.

Effects of high irradiance and moderate heat on photosynthesis of the tree-fern Dicksonia antarctica (Labill., Dicksoniaceae) were examined in a climate chamber under two contrasting irradiance regimes (900 and 170 µmol photons m-2 s-1) and three sequential temperature treatments (15°C; 35°C; back to 15°C). High irradiance led to decline in predawn quantum yield of photochemistry, Fv/Fm (0.73), maximal Rubisco activity (Vcmax; from 37 to 29 µmol m-2s-1), and electron transport capacity (Jmax; from 115 to 67 µmol m-2 s-1). Temperature increase to 35°C resulted in further decreases in Fv/Fm (0.4

Physiological, biochemical, and ultrastructural responses of the green macroalga Urospora penicilliformis from Arctic Spitsbergen to UV radiation.

Exposure of the filamentous turf green alga Urospora penicilliformis to ambient and artificial ultraviolet radiation (UVR) revealed a considerable resilient species. This explains the ability of this alga to thrive in the middle-upper intertidal zones of the Arctic sea where it is periodically exposed to environmental extremes. A transient UVR effect on photosynthesis under photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) + UV-A and PAR + UV-A + UV-B was found, but dynamic recovery of photoinhibition was observed immediately after reduction of the photon fluence rate of PAR in the absence or presence

Associations of serum carotenoid concentrations with the development of diabetes and with insulin concentration: interaction with smoking: the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study.

Smoking is associated with low serum carotenoid concentrations. Prospective studies have found lower diabetes risk among persons with high-carotenoid diets. Whether diabetes risk is low in the rare smoker who has high serum carotenoid levels is unknown. The authors investigated the interaction of serum carotenoid concentrations and smoking with diabetes mellitus in 4,493 Black and White men and women aged 18-30 years in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study. The authors assessed 15-year (1985-2001) incident diabetes (148 cases), insulin concentration, and insulin

UV-A mediated induction of carotenoid accumulation in Dunaliella bardawil with retention of cell viability.

The effect of adding UV-A radiation (320-400 nm) to photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 400-700 nm) during growth of the photosynthetic marine microalga Dunaliella bardawil was investigated in this work in terms of cell growth and carotenoid production. Although signs of slow cell growth (slight reduction of chlorophyll and protein content) were observed after 24 h of cell exposure to UV-A (40 micromol photons m(-2) s(-1) and 70 micromol photons m(-2) s(-1)) plus 140 micromol photons m(-2) s(-1) PAR , 84 h exposure to these UV-A conditions slightly stimulated cell growth and increased th

Physico-chemical factors and nanomaterial-mediated optimization of pigment yield from a psychrotrophic marine Citricoccus-like isolate of an Arctic fjord.

Bacterial pigments have broad industrial applications and are relatively easy to scale up. However, Arctic microbial sources remain largely unexplored. In this study, we isolated a yellow-pigmented bacterium, PS104, from the Arctic Ny-Ålesund fjord in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, Norway. Biochemical assays and 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that PS104 is closely related to the genus Citricoccus. Pigment characterization using UV-visible spectroscopy showed a carotenoid-like profile with a three-shoulder absorption peak, while Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and high-resolution li

Dual disruption of MiMPK4-mediated phosphorylation and interaction with MiRAP2.11 is required for blue light-induced carotenoid biosynthesis in mango fruit.

Light regulates carotenoid biosynthesis in plants at multiple levels. However, the involvement of protein phosphorylation in light-induced carotenoid biosynthesis remains largely unexplored. Our previous studies demonstrated that blue light promotes carotenoid biosynthesis in mango fruit. In this study, we elucidated that blue light induces carotenoid biosynthesis in mango fruit by disrupting the MiMPK4 (MITOGEN-ACTIVATED PROTEIN KINASE 4)-MiRAP2.11 regulatory module. MiRAP2.11, an ethylene response factor subfamily transcription factor (TF) induced by blue light, acts as a nucleus-localized t
