Aspirin-exacerbated cutaneous disease (AECD) is a distinct subphenotype of chronic spontaneous urticaria.

BACKGROUND: A subset of patients with chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU) experience disease exacerbations after receiving non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This condition has been designated as Aspirin-Exacerbated Cutaneous Disease (AECD). OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was twofold: (i) Investigate the demographic and clinical features of patients affected by AECD; (ii) To compare patients with AECD and NSAID-tolerant CSU patients for those characteristics. METHODS: Patients with AECD and a group of unselected CSU patients tolerant to NSAIDs were studied. Demographic an

Epstein-Barr virus-associated lymphoproliferative lesions presenting as a hydroa vacciniforme-like eruption: an analysis of six cases.

BACKGROUND: There are many reports of patients with a severe hydroa vacciniforme (HV)-like eruption in which cutaneous lesions occur in both sun-exposed and non-exposed areas, unlike in true HV. Several patients have died from a malignant haematological neoplasm. In most cases, a latent Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection has been detected in the skin lesions. OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical and laboratory features of six additional patients with an EBV-associated HV-like eruption. METHODS: The clinical, histological and immunohistochemical features were reviewed. T-cell receptor gamma g

Epidermolysis bullosa acquisita localized to the face.

A 39-year-old woman had a three-year history of recurrent bullous eruption localized to her left cheek. The diagnosis of epidermolysis bullosa acquisita was confirmed by means of direct immunofluorescence and direct immunoelectron microscopic studies performed on the perilesional salt-split skin. Topical corticosteroid treatment reduced pruritus and bullae formation. This case of localized epidermolysis bullosa acquisita on the face is reminiscent of Brunsting-Perry cicatricial pemphigoid. We also review the previously reported cases of localized epidermolysis bullosa acquisita.

The clinical utility of laboratory monitoring during isotretinoin therapy for acne and changes to monitoring practices over time.

BACKGROUND: As a result of concerns about hypertriglyceridemia, liver enzyme abnormalities, and leukopenia during isotretinoin therapy for acne, patients are often monitored closely with routine laboratory assessments, although the value of this practice has been questioned. METHODS: We conducted a cohort study of patients receiving isotretinoin for acne between January 1, 2008, and June 30, 2017, using the OptumInsights Electronic Health Record Database (Optum, Eden Prairie, MN) to evaluate the frequency of laboratory abnormalities. Poisson regression was used to evaluate for changes to the

Topical Treatment of Facial Seborrheic Dermatitis: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Facial seborrheic dermatitis (SD), a chronic inflammatory skin condition, can impact quality of life, and relapses can be frequent. Three broad categories of agents are used to treat SD: antifungal agents, keratolytics, and corticosteroids. Topical therapies are the first line of defense in treating this condition. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to critically review the published literature on topical treatments for facial SD. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, Clinicaltrials.gov, MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane library databases for original clinical studies evaluating topical tre

Phacomatosis cesiomarmorata with hypospadias and phacomatosis cesioflammea with Sturge-Weber syndrome, Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome and aplasia of veins -- case reports with rare associations.

Phacomatosis pigmentovascularis (PPV) is a rare genodermatosis characterized by the co-existence of an extensive vascular and a pigmentary nevus with or without extracutaneous manifestations. We report two such rare cases. The first is a 3-year-old boy exhibiting a rare association of cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita with aberrant dermal melanocytosis along with hypospadias and melanosis oculi (traditionally classified as PPV type Vb or phacomatosis cesiomarmorata - Happle's classification). The other patient is a 5-year-old boy with Sturge-Weber syndrome, Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome,

How do perceptions of sensitive skin differ at different anatomical sites? An epidemiological study.

BACKGROUND: People with sensitive skin vary not only in the signs and symptoms they experience, but also in the degree of sensitivity at different anatomical sites. AIM: To determine patterns of perceived sensitive skin using an epidemiological approach among a general population, evaluating the results for ethnic, gender and age differences. METHODS: Questionnaires designed to evaluate perceptions of sensitive skin in general and at specific body sites (face, body and genital area) were given to 1039 people. Respondents were not selected based on any criteria related to sensitive skin, but

[Epidemiology of skin diseases in HIV-infected patients: a prospective cohort study].

Along with the rising AIDS epidemic, the recognition of mucocutaneous lesions indicating HIV infection is important not only for dermatologists but also for general practitioners. During 36 months we prospectively followed 357 HIV-1-infected patients on a regular base, and all the dermatologic findings were evaluated statistically. Several skin problems such as seborrheic dermatitis, may occur early in HIV infection. Mollusca contagiosa, oral hairy leukoplakia and Kaposi's sarcoma are often clinical signs of marked disease progression with very low CD4-cell counts.

Efficacy of Microneedle Fractional Radiofrequency Combined With Platelet-Rich Plasma for the Treatment of Melasma: A Split-Face, Randomized Trial.

BACKGROUND: Melasma is a common facial pigmentary disorder that markedly impairs quality of life, yet current treatments often yield incomplete clearance and frequent relapse. Microneedle fractional radiofrequency (MFR) can remodel the dermis and enhance transdermal delivery, whereas platelet-rich plasma (PRP) provides growth factors that may modulate melanogenesis and inflammation. AIMS: To compare the efficacy and safety of MFR combined with PRP versus MFR alone in the treatment of facial melasma. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, evaluator-blinded, split-face trial, 30 patients wi

Periorbital dermatitis in 4779 patients - patch test results during a 10-year period.

BACKGROUND: The thinness of the periorbital skin may facilitate allergen penetration, making this area particularly susceptible to sensitization. MATERIAL AND METHODS: For the cross-sectional study, data were collected by the 57 participating centres of the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology. A total of 101 403 patients patch tested between January 2001 and December 2010 were included. Of these, 4779 patients suffered from periorbital dermatitis. RESULTS: Two major subgroups with different general epidemiological data and sensitization to specific allergens have to be consider
