The Coonrad-Morrey total elbow arthroplasty in patients who have rheumatoid arthritis. A ten to fifteen-year follow-up study.

Sixty-nine patients (seventy-eight elbows) who had rheumatoid arthritis were managed with a Coonrad-Morrey total elbow arthroplasty between 1981 and 1986. At the time of the present review, forty-one patients (forty-six elbows) were alive and had been followed for at least ten years after the procedure (Group 1). The remaining twenty-eight patients (thirty-two elbows) had died or had had a revision less than ten years after the procedure or had been followed for less than ten years (Group 2). The patients in Group 1 had a younger mean age at the time of the procedure, but all other preoperativ

Reconstruction of the distal aspect of the radius with use of an osteoarticular allograft after excision of a skeletal tumor.

Twenty-four patients had reconstruction of the distal aspect of the radius with use of an osteoarticular allograft, between 1974 and 1992, after excision of a giant-cell tumor (twenty patients), a desmoplastic fibroma (two patients), a chondrosarcoma (one patient), or an angiosarcoma (one patient). Nine giant-cell tumors were recurrent lesions, and eleven were extracompartmental primary lesions that had extended through the cortex or subchondral bone. The average age of the patients was 31.5 years (range, fifteen to sixty-one years); thirteen patients were female and eleven were male. Seventee

Effect of foot orthotics on running kinetics in adults with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: A controlled laboratory study.

Individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction and pronated feet (ACLR-PF) often display abnormal running ground reaction forces (GRFs), which are associated with higher re-injury risk and post-traumatic osteoarthritis. While foot orthoses (FOs) are used to influence biomechanics, their effectiveness at various post-operative stages in this group remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the immediate impact of different FOs on GRFs during running in males with ACLR-PF at 6-, 12-, and 18-months post-operative, compared to a healthy control group. This controlled laboratory stud

Effects of grip contraction with different finger recruitment and different wrist positions on dynamic medial elbow joint stability.

BACKGROUND: Medial ulnar collateral ligament (MUCL) injuries are increasing among baseball players. Flexor-pronator muscles, particularly the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS), are crucial for dynamic medial elbow stability. The FDS consists of superficial (third and fourth digits) and deep (second and fifth digits) layers; however, their isolated roles in medial elbow stability remain unclear. The wrist position also differs among pitch types, such as fastballs and curveballs, potentially affecting medial elbow stability. This study aimed to examine the effect of excluding the second- or t

Comprehensive Conservative Treatment and Surgical Management of Elbow Common Flexor Tendon and Common Extensor Tendon Tears, 200 Operative Cases with Average 9 Year Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Medial (ME) and lateral epicondylitis (LE) are common elbow pathologies characterized by flexor-pronator and extensor carpi radialis brevis tendinous degeneration, respectively. While nonoperative treatment is often successful, some patients do require surgical intervention. Little data exists on the long-term postoperative recovery outcomes of patients in terms of reoperation rate, return of symptoms, and return to activity. Even further, little information exists describing risk factors associated with failing nonoperative interventions. The purpose of the study was threefold: 1)

Effects of tape and Kinesiotape on ankle range of motion, Single Leg Drop Jump and balance after running-induced fatigue: a cross-over clinical trial.

The prevention and management of injuries in runners is a key area of research in sports medicine. Fatigue during running can lead to biomechanical imbalances and inhibition of stabilizing muscles, increasing the risk of injury. With the ankle being the most commonly injured joint in runners, rigid tape (RT) and Kinesiotape (KT) have been proposed as effective methods to improve joint stability and reduce injury risk. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of a KT and RT and no tape (control group) on lower limb balance, ankle dorsiflexion ROM, and electromyographic (EMG) activ

Timing Matters: Challenges in Delayed Surgical Management of Pediatric Humeral Medial Epicondyle Fractures.

BACKGROUND: Humeral medial epicondyle fractures comprise 12% of pediatric elbow injuries. Delay in surgical intervention may be more involved than acute surgery due to soft tissue shortening, fragment-induced joint surface damage, elbow stiffness, and ulnar nerve displacement/scarring. There are limited prior case reports on delayed surgical management. The purpose of this study is to provide a descriptive analysis of a series of medial epicondyle fracture patients treated with delayed surgical management. METHODS: Delayed surgical management was defined as any operative repair of the medial

Obese mice exposed to psychosocial stress display cardiac and hippocampal dysfunction associated with local brain-derived neurotrophic factor depletion.

INTRODUCTION: Obesity and psychosocial stress (PS) co-exist in individuals of Western society. Nevertheless, how PS impacts cardiac and hippocampal phenotype in obese subjects is still unknown. Nor is it clear whether changes in local brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) account, at least in part, for myocardial and behavioral abnormalities in obese experiencing PS. METHODS: In adult male WT mice, obesity was induced via a high-fat diet (HFD). The resident-intruder paradigm was superimposed to trigger PS. In vivo left ventricular (LV) performance was evaluated by echocardiography and pres

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: The Tethered Spine III: Is fascial spiral the key?

This article reports on an observational and treatment case series involving 22 adolescents and preadolescents treated over a 15 year period who had or appeared to be developing idiopathic scoliosis (IS). Common patterns of muscle and fascial asymmetry were observed and treated. Most of these individuals had spinal area pain and the trigger points (TrPs) apparently responsible for this pain were located in muscles at some distance from the spine, yet referred pain to locations throughout the thoracolumbar spine. Asymmetries in tension in these muscles appear to tether the spine in such a way a

Incidence and pattern of concurrent capitellum fracture associated with radial head and neck fractures.

BACKGROUND: Radial head and neck fracture is a common fracture around the elbow. It is mostly caused by axial or valgus loading after a fall in elbow extension and forearm pronation. When a radial head and neck fracture occurs, the capitellum collides with the radial head and experiences a shear force, leading to capitellum fracture. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of concurrent capitellum fracture and analyze its patterns among patients treated for radial head and neck fractures based on computed tomography. Secondary aim is to determine factors associated with con

Palmer Midcarpal Instability: An Algorithm of Diagnosis and Surgical Management.

Background  Palmar midcarpal instability (PMCI) is an uncommon form of nondissociative carpal instability. However, it is an important cause of chronic ulnar wrist pain. Diagnosis can be difficult and high index of suspicion is mandatory. Pathomechanics and optimal treatment of PMCI remain uncertain. We propose an algorithm of clinical diagnosis and evaluate the outcome of our management. Materials and Methods  Between 2000 and 2011, 16 patients, including 7 males and 9 females, of a mean age of 33.9 diagnosed with PMCI were reviewed for their clinical, radiologic, and arthroscopic features.
