A 12-week aerobic exercise program reduces hepatic fat accumulation and insulin resistance in obese, Hispanic adolescents.

The rise in obesity-related morbidity in children and adolescents requires urgent prevention and treatment strategies. Currently, only limited data are available on the effects of exercise programs on insulin resistance, and visceral, hepatic, and intramyocellular fat accumulation. We hypothesized that a 12-week controlled aerobic exercise program without weight loss reduces visceral, hepatic, and intramyocellular fat content and decreases insulin resistance in sedentary Hispanic adolescents. Twenty-nine postpubertal (Tanner stage IV and V), Hispanic adolescents, 15 obese (7 boys, 8 girls; 15.

Postural abnormalities and functional impairment in hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Postural abnormalities, particularly thoracic hyperkyphosis and forward head posture (FHP), are increasingly recognized as prevalent yet under-investigated complications in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Such deformities are associated with impaired gait, balance, and overall functional capacity. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of thoracic hyperkyphosis and FHP among hemodialysis (HD) and peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients and to explore their associations with key physical performance measures. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 276 ESRD patients (

Associations between objectively measured physical activity intensities and executive function in preschool children: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Executive function, including inhibitory control, working memory, and cognitive flexibility, develops rapidly during the preschool years and is central to children's cognitive, behavioral, and social development. Physical activity is a potentially modifiable factor that may support executive function; however, evidence regarding the associations of specific physical activity intensities with individual executive function domains in preschool children remains limited and inconsistent. This cross-sectional study examined associations between objectively measured physical activity int

What is the role of adherence to 24-hour movement guidelines in relation to physical fitness components among adolescents?

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity, excessive sedentary time, and lack of sleep time have been independently associated with lower health-related physical fitness. However, little is known about the combined association between 24-h movement guidelines (i.e., physical activity, recreational screen time, and sleep duration) and components of physical fitness. OBJECTIVE: The main aim was to examine the likelihood of having high/very high levels on different components of physical fitness based on meeting with 24-h movement guidelines. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 1276 Spanish youths (1

The Prevalence and Determinants of Vitamin D Inadequacy among U.S. Older Adults: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2014.

Background Older adults (i.e., adults aged ≥ 60 years) are at higher risk of vitamin D deficiency compared to younger adults as a result of inadequate dietary vitamin D intake and limited exposure to sunlight. Thus, the present study aimed to describe the prevalence of vitamin deficiency and inadequacy among U.S. adults aged ≥ 60 years and the effect of vitamin D supplementation on 25, hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) and its metabolites concentrations. Methods The present analysis was based on data from 6,261 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey cycles 2007/2008 thro

Childhood overweight: an expanding problem.

Childhood overweight is a significant and growing health problem in the US and other parts of the world. Secular trend data in the US suggest that children have become substantially heavier over the last several decades and that their risk for a number of health problems is increasing as a result. Defining obesity in children has been difficult as assessing body fat is expensive and impractical. Body mass index (BMI), derived from weight and height, is used as a surrogate indicator in adults. In children, the consensus is to use BMI percentiles statistically derived from a reference population

Robust Assessment of Free-Living Physical Behaviors and Activity Intensity Using Dual-Wearable Multitask Learning: Development and Evaluation Study From the Multicenter WEALTH Project.

BACKGROUND: Accurate assessment of physical behaviors (PBs) and activity intensity is essential for public health research and digital health monitoring. Wearable accelerometers combined with machine learning (ML) or deep learning (DL) enable objective behavior assessment, but most existing models are trained on laboratory data, limiting generalizability to free-living conditions. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and evaluate multitask ML and DL models for PB classification across 7 categories (sitting, standing, walking, running, sports, cycling, and lying) and activity intensity categ

Effects of Exercise Combined With Vitamin D Interventions on Glucose-Lipid Metabolism and Obesity in Individuals With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

CONTEXT: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a common chronic metabolic disorder frequently linked to unhealthy dietary habits and sedentary behavior. Overweight and obesity are major risk factors for T2DM, which increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases. While exercise interventions are an effective strategy in the management of diabetes mellitus and its complications, vitamin D supplementation has also shown potential to enhance insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation in patients with T2DM. Recent studies have indicated that combining exercise with vitamin D supplementation may overco

Pediatric obesity. An overview of etiology and treatment.

Pediatric obesity is a chronic and growing problem for which new ideas about the biologic basis of obesity offer hope for effective solutions. Prevalence of pediatric and adult obesity is increasing despite a bewildering array of treatment programs and severe psychosocial and economic costs. The definition of obesity as an increase in fat mass, not just an increase in body weight, has profound influence on the understanding and treatment of obesity. In principle, body weight is determined by a balance between energy expenditure and energy intake, but this observation does not by itself explain

Impact of sitting at work on musculoskeletal complaints of German workers - results from the study on mental health at work (S-MGA).

INTRODUCTION: Sedentary behavior (including prolonged sitting) is a form of physical inactivity that has a negative impact on health, possibly including musculoskeletal complaints (MSCs). The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which time spent sitting at work is associated with the one-year prevalence of MSCs in the neck, shoulder, upper back/thoracic spine, and lower back among workers from the Study of Mental Health in the Workplace (S-MGA). In addition, the study also examined whether leisure time, physical activity, and sex modify the relationship between occupational sit

Effectiveness of a Parent-Based eHealth Intervention for Physical Activity, Dietary Behavior, and Sleep Among Preschoolers: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Preschoolers' lifestyles have become physically inactive and sedentary, their eating habits have become unhealthy, and their sleep routines have become increasingly disturbed. Parent-based interventions have shown promise to improve physical activity (PA), improve dietary behavior (DB), and reduce sleep problems among preschoolers. However, because of the recognized obstacles of face-to-face approaches (eg, travel costs and time commitment), easy access and lower costs make eHealth interventions appealing. Previous studies that examined the effectiveness of parent-based eHealth for

Exergaming With Beat Saber: An Investigation of Virtual Reality Aftereffects.

BACKGROUND: Virtual reality (VR) exergaming has the potential to target sedentary behavior. Immersive environments can distract users from the physical exertion of exercise and can motivate them to continue exergaming. Despite the recent surge in VR popularity, numerous users still experience VR sickness from using head-mounted displays (HMDs). Apart from the commonly assessed self-reported symptoms, depth perception and cognition may also be affected. Considering the potential benefits of VR exergaming, it is crucial to identify the adverse effects limiting its potential and continued uptake.

Amino acid and fatty acid metabolomic profile during fasting and hyperinsulinemia in girls with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is associated with insulin resistance (IR) and altered muscle mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. IR in adults with obesity and diabetes is associated with changes in amino acid, free fatty acid (FFA), and mitochondrial acylcarnitine (AC) metabolism. We sought to determine whether these metabolites are associated with IR and/or androgens in youth-onset PCOS. We enrolled obese girls with PCOS [ n = 15, 14.5 yr (SD 1.6), %BMI 98.5 (SD 1.0)] and without PCOS [ n = 6, 13.2 yr (SD 1.2), %BMI 98.0 (SD 1.1)]. Insulin sensitivity was assessed by hyperinsulinemic

Influence of Sodium Glucose Cotransporter 2 Inhibition on Physiological Adaptation to Endurance Exercise Training.

CONTEXT: The combination of two beneficial antidiabetes interventions, regular exercise and pharmaceuticals, is intuitively appealing. However, metformin, the most commonly prescribed diabetes medication, attenuates the favorable physiological adaptations to exercise; in turn, exercise may impede the action of metformin. OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine the influence of an alternative diabetes treatment, sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibition, on the response to endurance exercise training. DESIGN, PARTICIPANTS, AND INTERVENTION: In a randomized, double-blind, repeated measures p

Exenatide improves diastolic function and attenuates arterial stiffness but does not alter exercise capacity in individuals with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is recommended as a cornerstone of treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), however, it is often poorly adopted by patients. Even in the absence of apparent cardiovascular disease, persons with T2DM have an impaired ability to carry out maximal and submaximal exercise and these impairments are correlated with cardiac and endothelial dysfunction. Glucagon-like pepetide-1 (GLP-1) augments endothelial and cardiac function in T2DM. We hypothesized that administration of a GLP-1 agonist (exenatide) would improve exercise capacity in T2DM. Triglyceride glucose index for the detection of asymptomatic coronary artery stenosis in patients with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Triglyceride Glucose (TyG) index has been associated with an increased risk in cardiovascular events. Silent coronary disease is common in patients with type 2 diabetes. In Vietnam, a low-middle income country, the burden of cardiovascular disease is growing simultaneously with the epidemiologic transition. Our aim was to assess the prevalence of coronary stenoses (CS) in patients with type 2 diabetes and no history or symptom of cardiovascular disease and to investigate the association between TyG index and cardiovascular risk factors and both the presence and severity of CS. Five months of voluntary wheel running downregulates skeletal muscle LINE-1 gene expression in rats.

Transposable elements (TEs) are mobile DNA and constitute approximately half of the human genome. LINE-1 (L1) is the only active autonomous TE in the mammalian genome and has been implicated in a number of diseases as well as aging. We have previously reported that skeletal muscle L1 expression is lower following acute and chronic exercise training in humans. Herein, we used a rodent model of voluntary wheel running to determine whether long-term exercise training affects markers of skeletal muscle L1 regulation. Selectively bred high-running female Wistar rats (n = 11 per group) were either g

Peripheral chemoreceptors mediate training-induced plasticity in paraventricular nucleus pre-autonomic oxytocinergic neurons.

We showed previously that sino-aortic denervation prevented training-induced plasticity in pre-autonomic oxytocinergic neurons and blocked the beneficial effects of training. In this study, we investigate the combined effect of training and removal of specific chemoreceptor afferents on both cardiovascular parameters and oxytocin (OT) gene and protein expression within the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN). Wistar rats and spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) underwent carotid body denervation or sham surgery and were trained or kept sedentary for 3 months. After haemodynamic measur
