[The first experience of iris-fixated intraocular lens implantation in patients with open-angle glaucoma].

The results of iris-claw intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in patients with lens dislocation, deficiency of capsule support in combination with glaucoma are presented. Iris-claw "Artizan" IOL was used in 16 eyes. IOL was implanted through 5 mm corneal incision into the posterior chamber with haptic fixated to iris stroma. Implantation of this IOL model is minimally traumatic, provides favorable visual outcome and does not lead to intraocular pressure decompensation in patients with glaucoma.

Glaucoma following childhood cataract surgery.

Glaucoma has been recognized as an infrequent but serious complication following surgery for congenital and acquired cataracts in childhood. Little is known concerning the influence of factors on the risk of glaucoma such as age at surgery, type of cataract, associated ocular abnormalities, and type of surgery. We reviewed records of 240 eyes of 155 patients on whom cataract surgery had been performed between January 1965 and July 1990 at Children's Hospital, Boston. After excluding those patients who had been followed up less than 5 years after surgery, and those who had had surgery after the

Laser trabeculoplasty for glaucoma in aphakic and pseudophakic eyes after penetrating keratoplasty.

We used argon laser trabeculoplasty to treat medically uncontrolled glaucoma after penetrating keratoplasty in ten eyes that were aphakic or pseudophakic. These patients were examined over an average of 22.8 months (range, 12 to 37 months) after treatment. We found an average decrease in intraocular pressure of 9.1 mm Hg (range, +8 to -19), from an average of 30.6 mm Hg before treatment to an average of 21.5 mm Hg after treatment. Eight of ten eyes had a reduction of greater than 5 mm Hg, and six of ten eyes had intraocular pressure of less than 20 mm Hg. Visual function remained stable, and c

The incidence of ulcerative keratitis among aphakic contact lens wearers in New England.

We conducted a population-based incidence study in five New England states to quantify the risk of ulcerative keratitis associated with contact lens use among aphakic persons. All practicing ophthalmologists in the five-state area were surveyed to identify prospectively all new cases of ulcerative keratitis during a 4-month period. The number of aphakic persons using specific types of contact lenses was estimated through a telephone survey of 4178 households identified by random digit dialing. The annualized incidence of ulcerative keratitis among aphakic persons using contact lenses was estim
