Prevalence of intestinal parasites in rural Southern Indians.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of intestinal protozoal and helminthic infection in a rural population. METHOD: Seventy-eight members of 15 families from a village were studied. Stool samples from all subjects were examined on alternate days for one month. RESULTS: The overall prevalence rate of various parasitic infections was 97.4%, with only 2 of 78 subjects not excreting parasites in any of their 15 samples. Eighteen (23.1%) persons had only one type of parasite, while 58 (74.3%) excreted multiple parasites. Giardia and Cryptosporidium were the commonest protozoan infections, affe

Epidemiology of intestinal parasite infections and multiparasitism and their impact on growth and hemoglobin levels during childhood in tropical Ecuador: A longitudinal study using molecular detection methods.

BACKGROUND: There are few longitudinal epidemiological studies of intestinal parasitic infections (IPI) and their health effects. We studied the epidemiology and determinants of IPI and multiparasitism during childhood using molecular methods for parasite detection and analysed their effects on growth and hemoglobin levels. METHODS: Random sample of 401 children from an Ecuadorian birth cohort followed up to 8 years of age. Data on environmental and sociodemographic characteristics were collected by questionnaires. Stool samples were collected, and weight, height, and hemoglobin levels were m

Evaluating the role of synanthropic filth flies in the transmission of zoonotic parasites: field and laboratory evidence from different animal rearing sites in upper Egypt with focus on Cryptosporidium spp.

BACKGROUND: Synanthropic filth flies thrive in human and animal habitats, posing health risks through the transmission of infectious agents. They breed on organic waste, including animal feces, making them carriers of various pathogens. In Egypt, where livestock farming is common and poor sanitation, these flies may contribute to zoonotic disease transmission. The current study investigates parasitic infections in filth flies from three livestock farms in Assiut Governorate, Upper Egypt, highlighting their role as vectors for zoonotic infections, particularly Cryptosporidium, via morphological

Co-parasitism of intestinal protozoa and Schistosoma japonicum in a rural community in the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: Co-parasitism is a frequent occurrence in impoverished communities in the tropics resulting in a considerable disease burden. While there are extensive reports of intestinal helminthiases, including schistosomiasis japonica, the occurrence and extent of diseases caused by intestinal protozoa (IP) have yet to be investigated in depth in the Philippines. We present a detailed analysis of polyparasitism in a rural community of Northern Samar, focusing on co-infections of IP with Schistosoma japonicum. METHODS: A descriptive cross sectional study was carried out in 2015 across 18 bara

Antiprotozoal, antimycobacterial, and anti-inflammatory evaluation of Cnidoscolus chayamansa (Mc Vaugh) extract and the isolated compounds.

Cnidoscolus chayamansa is a medicinal and edible plant known as Chaya, is commonly used as an anti-inflammatory, antiprotozoal, antibacterial agent and as a remedy for respiratory illness, gastrointestinal disorders, and vaginal infections related with the inflammation process. In this paper, we describe the plant's phytochemical analysis and biological activities (antimycobacterial, antibacterial, antiprotozoal, and anti-inflammatory properties) of the CHCl3:MeOH (1:1) leaves extract and isolated compounds, as well as the acute and sub-acute toxic effects. Chemical identification of isolated

Epidemiologic features of intestinal parasitic infections in Italian mental institutions.

To determine the prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in the residents of four Italian psychiatric institutions, we examined the stool specimens collected in triplicate from 238 residents, enrolled between May 1995 and May 1996. Besides, physician and staff nurses provided data about each resident by standardized questionnaires. Parasites were detected in the fecal samples from 128 patients (53.8%). However, in the stool specimens from 106 residents only non-pathogenic protozoa were found (82.8%). Trichuris trichiura ova, Giardia lamblia cysts and trophozoites, Cryptosporidium parvum

[Evaluation of helminth carrier rates among foreign workers (author's transl)].

The evaluated helminth carrier rate among foreign workers give rise to many problems under socio-economic, hygienic and occupational aspects. The evaluation of helminth infestation is connected with considerable uncertainty. Based on the author's examinations these problems are critically investigated from the point of view of both, the employer and the employee. It is shown in tables that in the Institute of Hygiene and Microbiology of Würzburg during 1973/1974 497/702 respectively faecal examinations were performed among German and foreign employees and workers. No difference was noted in th
