Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphorus compound that displays broad-spectrum insecticidal activity against a number of important arthropod pests. As a result, it is employed in a wide variety of agricultural and specialty pest control scenarios. Various formulations of chlorpyrifos have been developed to maximize stability and contact with pests and minimize human exposure. From corn agriculture in the United States to termite control in Japan to cotton agriculture in Egypt to citrus horticulture in Spain, chloropyrifos has been successfully employed to combat insect and other arthropod pests thr

During an informal study in 1973 it was noted that approximately one third of patients with congenital heart disease lived in a small area in the Tucson Valley. In 1981 groundwater for a nearly identical area was found to be contaminated with trichloroethylene and to a lesser extent with dichloroethylene and chromium. Contamination probably began during the 1950s. Affected wells were closed after discovery of contamination. This sequence of events allowed investigation of the prevalence of congenital heart disease in children whose parents were exposed to the contaminated water area as compare

The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) prepared this health consultation to provide support for assessing the public health implications of hazardous chemical exposure, primarily through drinking water, related to releases of chromated copper arsenate (CCA) in the port of Djibouti. CCA from a shipment, apparently intended for treating electric poles, is leaking into the soil in the port area. CCA is a pesticide used to protect wood against decay-causing organisms. This mixture commonly contains chromium(VI) (hexavalent chromium) as chromic acid, arsenic(V) (pentavalent ar

Often rates of biodegradation driving natural source zone depletion (NSZD) are estimated for weathered and aged petroleum releases, and often after active recovery is less feasible. But an open question is "When do natural biodegradation rates of petroleum hydrocarbon mass removal exceed what's removable by active engineered approaches for a fresh release of petroleum fuel?". Here we report on intensive site investigations and measurements over 15 months, that quantified active LNAPL mass recovery and NSZD rates implemented shortly after a new release of light non-aqueous phase liquid (LNAPL)

Aristolochia species have long been used in traditional medicine for their presumed anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antimicrobial properties. However, extensive toxicological and epidemiological evidence now demonstrates that these plants contain aristolochic acids (AAs) I and II, highly potent nephrotoxic, genotoxic, and carcinogenic compounds. This review integrates findings from experimental models, clinical investigations, and environmental monitoring, emphasizing the persistence, mobility, and bioaccumulation of AAs in ecosystems and food chains. Compelling epidemiological data show that

Populations of the acidophilic purple nonsulfur bacterium Rhodopila globiformis were identified in two geographically distinct thermal areas in Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, USA), as confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and detection of characteristic methoxylated ketocarotenoids. Microcosm-based carbon uptake assays where oxygenic photosynthesis was excluded via addition of 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea yielded a light-driven dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) assimilation rate (7 ± 2 mg C g C-1 h-1) comparable to those of highly productive algal mats in acidic hot springs, sug

Pesticide loss to stream water was studied in a small agricultural catchment in southern Sweden during the period 1990-1996. A total of 38 pesticides were detected in water samples, including 30 herbicides, four fungicides, three insecticides and one metabolite of one of the herbicides. Concentrations of pesticides in stream water were observed throughout the sampling periods. Peak concentrations occurred during the spraying seasons and following runoff events. Daily average concentrations sometimes varied by one order of magnitude from one day to another. Pesticides were also found in water s

Although incineration is a prevalent method for medical waste treatment in developing countries like Tanzania, the environmental safety of the resulting ash is often overlooked. This study aimed to present a detailed characterization of bottom ash from a medical waste incinerator at Kaloleni Hospital, Arusha, to assess its chemical composition, leaching potential, and environmental risk. Herein, source-segregated medical waste from three streams, including infectious waste (red bags), laboratory/pharmaceutical waste (yellow bags), and general waste (black bags), was analyzed. The findings reve

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is increasingly recognised as a One Health challenge in which environmental reservoirs play an important role in the persistence and dissemination of resistance genes. Despite growing recognition that environmental antimicrobial resistance is a critical component of the One Health challenge, the pathways through which antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) move between environmental systems and human populations remain incompletely characterised, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where environmental exposures are greatest and surveillance capacity i

The adsorption of Mn2+ on montmorillonite and optimization by response surface methodology have been studied. The alteration of K10 and MMT-Na by sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) yields promising data on Mn2+ uptake. The SDS-induced embolism of K10 and MMT-Na montmorillonites opens lamellae and increases surface area, thereby increasing their adsorption capacity for Mn2+. The adsorption of Mn2+ increases slightly with increasing pH until pH = 8. From the Mn2+ species distribution, at pH < 8.5, Mn2+ is the only soluble form in solution, and no other species form before pH = 8. The best RSM model de

UNLABELLED: Viral community structure is known to influence the evolution of microbes in diverse and complex environments. While the diversity of microbes and their viruses have been metagenomically explored in terrestrial hot springs and hydrothermal vent systems, other volcanic features remain remarkably understudied. Fumaroles (steam vents) are geothermal features that heat groundwater with magma, releasing heated water vapor and volcanic gases, such as CO2 and H2S. Fumaroles are physicochemically dynamic compared to terrestrial hot springs-temperatures and gas emissions fluctuate rapidly w

Landfills are heterogeneous built environments embedded in natural freshwater systems. They pose increasing risks of groundwater contamination from metal-bearing leachates over time. The interlinked succession of waste decomposition processes, microbial community membership, and metal cycling across a landfill's lifespan has not been explored, reducing our ability to predict the long-term environmental impacts of landfills. Working with 1,647 metagenome-assembled genomes from a single landfill, from samples spanning over 39 years of waste decomposition, we identified changes in landfill biogeo

As wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) is increasingly used to track community-level disease trends, it is important to understand how pathogen signals can be altered by phenomena that occur within sewersheds such as inflow and infiltration (I&I). Our objectives were to characterize I&I across a rural sewershed and assess potential impacts on viral (rotavirus, norovirus GII, and SARS-CoV-2), fecal indicator (HF183, the hCYTB484 gene specific to the human mitochondrial genome, and crAssphage), and antimicrobial resistance (intI1, blaCTX-M-1) targets. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in river watersheds dynamically changes based on its source during a monsoon period with storm event. However, the variations in DOM in urban and rural river watersheds that are dominated by point and non-point sources have not been adequately explored to date. We developed an innovative approach to reveal DOM sources in complex river watershed systems during pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon periods using end-member mixing analysis (EMMA) by combining multi-isotope values (δ13C-DOC, δ15N-NO3 and δ18O-NO3) and spectroscopic indices (fluorescence index [FI],

Neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg) is produced by anaerobic Bacteria and Archaea possessing the genes hgcAB, but it is unknown how organic substrate and electron acceptor availability impacts the distribution and abundance of these organisms. We evaluated the impact of organic substrate amendments on mercury (Hg) methylation rates, microbial community structure, and the distribution of hgcAB+ microbes with sediments. Sediment slurries were amended with short-chain fatty acids, alcohols, or a polysaccharide. Minimal increases in MeHg were observed following lactate, ethanol, and methanol amendment

Some compounds of arsenic are extremely toxic to the human body even at low levels. Long-term exposure from drinking contaminated water causes adverse health effects. This has led the European Union and other global organizations to reduce the maximum residue limit for the total arsenic up to 10 μg L-1 in water for human consumption. The toxicity of arsenic depends on the oxidation state, chemical structure and solubility in the biological environment. Main analytical procedures report on the determination of arsenic species in water samples which have been developed based on atomic spectrosco

Although Nepal is a country rich in natural beauty, along with an abundance of natural resources, the children of this diverse nation still face several serious health issues arising from their own environment (water pollution, air pollution, chemical pollution, solid waste issues and drainage issues). Nepal also ranks as a highly vulnerable country to the adverse impacts of climate change. Children are more vulnerable to various infections for immunological, physiological and social reasons. Their inherent immunity diminishes within months after birth. There are risk factors for the developme

Sulaimania is a City located in Kurdistan region in the north of Iraq. The city is facing a lack of water, and it will reach a very critical condition shortly. One of the potential solutions is to reuse the treated wastewater for non-direct human uses such as irrigation, washing, firefighting, groundwater recharging, and others. There is no sewage treatment plant in the city. The wastewater flows into a stream through some sewer outlets, and that causes big environmental issues. Decentralized wastewater treatment units (DTUs) are suggested to solve the issue. The treated wastewater will be use

Reliable prediction of the unsaturated zone transport and attenuation of dissolved-phase VOC (volatile organic compound) plumes leached from shallow source zones is a complex, multi-process, environmental problem. It is an important problem as sources, which include solid-waste landfills, aqueous-phase liquid discharge lagoons and NAPL releases partially penetrating the unsaturated zone, may persist for decades. Natural attenuation processes operating in the unsaturated zone that, uniquely for VOCs includes volatilisation, may, however, serve to protect underlying groundwater and potentially r
