Pathogen-specific risk factors and protective factors for acute diarrheal illness in children aged 12-59 months in São Paulo, Brazil.

Diarrheal diseases are a leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in Latin America. Most studies have focused on infants but not on older children. We enrolled 505 children (age, 12-59 months) with diarrhea and age-matched controls in a case-control study in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Independent risk factors for diarrhea included another household member with diarrhea (matched odds ratio [mOR], 8.1; attributable fraction [AF], 0.17; P<.001) and consumption of homemade juice (mOR, 1.8; AF, 0.10; P=.01); protective factors included boiling of the baby bottle or nipple (mOR, 0.60; AF, 0.19; P=

Vaccination Coverage Among Preschool Children in Germany: Trends, Regional Disparities, and Determinants from School Enrolment Examinations in Two Metropolitan Regions.

Background: Vaccinations are highly effective in preventing infectious diseases, which otherwise present a serious challenge to the health of individuals and public health. To identify potential gaps in vaccination coverage, we examined childhood vaccination levels in Frankfurt am Main (FFM) and the Rhein Neckar district (including Heidelberg city, RNHD) prior to, during and following the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, we explored various factors that appear to contribute to lower vaccination levels in specific communities in either or both locations. The results are intended to guide strategies

A Cross-Sectional Study of Socio-Demographic Factors and Vaccination Compliance Among Children Under Two in Bhubaneswar, India, With Emphasis on Parental Education.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination remains a cornerstone of child survival, yet coverage in low-resource settings often falls below global targets. Socio-demographic disparities, such as parental education, income, and healthcare access, persistently influence vaccine uptake in developing countries. This study focuses on Bhubaneswar, India, where rapid urbanization intersects with inequities in immunization access, to identify actionable predictors of compliance among children under the age of two. OBJECTIVES: This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the association between socio-demographic factors,

Antiviral Activity of Olanexidine-Containing Hand Rub against Human Noroviruses.

Human norovirus (HuNoV) is the leading cause of epidemic and sporadic acute gastroenteritis worldwide. HuNoV transmission occurs predominantly by direct person-to-person contact, and its health burden is associated with poor hand hygiene and a lack of effective antiseptics and disinfectants. Specific therapies and methods to prevent and control HuNoV spread previously were difficult to evaluate because of the lack of a cell culture system to propagate infectious virus. This barrier has been overcome with the successful cultivation of HuNoV in nontransformed human intestinal enteroids (HIEs). H

Lives saved with vaccination for 10 pathogens across 112 countries in a pre-COVID-19 world.

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is one of the most effective public health interventions. We investigate the impact of vaccination activities for Haemophilus influenzae type b, hepatitis B, human papillomavirus, Japanese encephalitis, measles, Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A, rotavirus, rubella, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and yellow fever over the years 2000-2030 across 112 countries. METHODS: Twenty-one mathematical models estimated disease burden using standardised demographic and immunisation data. Impact was attributed to the year of vaccination through vaccine-activity-stratified impact ratios

Gene Expression Signatures Associated With Survival Times of Pediatric Patients With Biliary Atresia Identify Potential Therapeutic Agents.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Little is known about the factors that affect outcomes of patients with biliary atresia and there are no medical therapies that increase biliary drainage. METHODS: Liver biopsies and clinical data were obtained from infants with cholestasis and from children without liver disease (controls); messenger RNA (mRNA) was isolated, randomly assigned to discovery (n = 121) and validation sets (n = 50), and analyzed by RNA sequencing. Using the Superpc R package followed by Cox regression analysis, we sought to identify gene expression profiles that correlated with survival without

RNA-Seq Data-Mining Allows the Discovery of Two Long Non-Coding RNA Biomarkers of Viral Infection in Humans.

There is a growing interest in unraveling gene expression mechanisms leading to viral host invasion and infection progression. Current findings reveal that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are implicated in the regulation of the immune system by influencing gene expression through a wide range of mechanisms. By mining whole-transcriptome shotgun sequencing (RNA-seq) data using machine learning approaches, we detected two lncRNAs (ENSG00000254680 and ENSG00000273149) that are downregulated in a wide range of viral infections and different cell types, including blood monocluclear cells, umbilical

Retinoic acid elicits a coordinated expression of gut homing markers on T lymphocytes of Zambian men receiving oral Vivotif, but not Rotarix, Dukoral or OPVERO vaccines.

All-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) up-regulates, in laboratory animals, the expression of the gut homing markers α4β7 integrin and CCR9 on lymphocytes, increasing their gut tropism. Here, we show that, in healthy adult volunteers, ATRA induced an increase of these gut homing markers on T cells in vivo in a time dependent manner. The coordinated increase of α4β7 and CCR9 by ATRA was seen in 57% (12/21) of volunteers and only when given together with an oral Vivotif vaccine. When this coordinated response to ATRA and Vivotif vaccine was present, it was strongly correlated with the gut immunoglobulin

Understanding Vaccine Hesitancy in Louisiana Through Social Media Listening and Community Feedback: Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: The rise of social media has significantly impacted public health programs, with platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, X (formerly known as Twitter), Instagram, and, more recently, TikTok being used to promote health information, raise awareness about disease outbreaks, and support disease prevention programs. However, the diverse and often unverified nature of the content on social media can make it challenging to discern accurate information, contributing to user uncertainty, which may in turn contribute to low vaccination rates in some regions. This is especially true in Louisian

Independent and joint associations of sex and birth order with non‑national immunization program vaccine coverage among Chinese children: a cross-sectional analysis.

BACKGROUND: In response to declining fertility rates, China implemented universal two- and three-child policies, leading to an increase of multi-child families. However, little is known whether and how these policy changes influenced the uptake of non-National Immunization Program (non-NIP) vaccines. We evaluated associations of sex and birth order with non-NIP vaccine coverage in 1-6-year-old children in China. METHODS: Our study was a cross-sectional survey of caregivers of 1-6-year-old children in Zhejiang and Henan Provinces in 2022. We obtained information on sex, birth order, vaccinatio

Probiotics, prebiotics, and synbiotics.

According to the German definition, probiotics are defined viable microorganisms, sufficient amounts of which reach the intestine in an active state and thus exert positive health effects. Numerous probiotic microorganisms (e.g. Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, L. reuteri, bifidobacteria and certain strains of L. casei or the L. acidophilus-group) are used in probiotic food, particularly fermented milk products, or have been investigated--as well as Escherichia coli strain Nissle 1917, certain enterococci (Enterococcus faecium SF68) and the probiotic yeast Saccharomyces boulardii--with regard to th

Financial requirements of immunisation programmes in developing countries: a 2004-2014 perspective.

Vaccines are a key contributor to public health, especially in developing countries. Despite numerous demonstrations of the cost-effectiveness of immunisation, vaccines spending accounted for only 1.7% of the total pharmaceutical market in 2002, when UNICEF estimated that 34 million children were not reached by routine immunisation, most of them in developing countries. Several international organizations or initiatives, like the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (GAVI), have defined a long-term goal of universal immunisation in developing countries. There is an urgent need to esti

[Acute diarrhea: stool water loss in hospitalized infants and its correlation with etiologic agents and lactose content in the diet].

Forty weaned male infants were studied during their first year of life, all hospitalized with acute diarrhea in the Gastroenterology and Metabolism Unit of the Hospital "Umberto I", São Paulo, SP, Brazil. We evaluated and quantified water fecal losses, employing the metabolic bed technique, relating the feeding formula employed with the different causal enteropathogenic agents. 67.5% of the studied infants were under six months and 40% under three months of age. Two groups were randomly assembled to receive, lactose or lactose free feeding formulae. Twenty one patients received a lactose-conta
