Comprehensive diagnosis of gastrointestinal parasites is largely reliant on traditional stool microscopy, despite gains in molecular diagnostics. Wet-mount examinations remain a significant challenge for traditional microscopy, digital microscopy, and artifical intelligence (AI). We developed and validated a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) model that provides highly sensitive detection and presumptive classification of enteric parasites. Twenty-seven different parasites were trained on a CNN model using a wide diversity of 4,049 unique parasite-positive specimens (determined by traditi

The QIAstat-Dx Gastrointestinal Panel 2 (GI2 Panel) is a sample-to-answer multiplex PCR instrument that can detect 17 targets in a run time of about 80 minutes. The performance of the QIAstat-Dx GI2 Panel was evaluated by testing 1,939 prospective, 119 prospectively collected and then archived positive clinical samples and 750 retrospective clinical specimens across 13 sites in Europe and the United States. Specimens tested included bulk stool samples preserved in modified Cary-Blair transport medium. For most targets, results were compared to those of the FilmArray GI panel (13/17), and disco

BACKGROUND: Formerly known as the Malaysian hunter gatherers, the Negrito Orang Asli (OA) were heavily dependent on the forest for sustenance and early studies indicated high prevalence of intestinal parasitism. Initiation of a redevelopment program in the 1970s aimed to demarginalize the OA was expected to reduce soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections. Gradually, the OA were relocated to new resettlement areas at the peripheries. The aim of this study was to compare STH infections between Negritos who are still living in the inland jungle with those living in resettlements.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasite infections (IPIs) are among the most significant causes of illness and disease of socially and economically disadvantaged populations in developing countries, including rural areas of the People's Republic of China. With the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among rural Chinese populations, there is ample scope for co-infections and there have been increasing fears about their effects. However, hardly any relevant epidemiological studies have been carried out in the country. The aim of the present survey was to assess the IPI infection status amon

BACKGROUND: In sub-Saharan Africa poly-parasite infections are frequently observed in children, and with poly-parasitism modulating immune mechanisms, mediated by cytokines and chemokines, are required to prevent overwhelming inflammation and host tissue damage. We analyzed in children co-infected with helminthes and protozoan parasites their cellular production of regulatory and pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines in response to parasite antigens and allergens.
METHODS: Intestinal and intravascular parasite infections were detected in stool and urines samples. The in vitro cellular cyt

The nitroimidazole antibiotic metronidazole has a limited spectrum of activity that encompasses various protozoans and most Gram-negative and Gram-positive anaerobic bacteria. Metronidazole has activity against protozoans like Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia and Trichomonas vaginalis, for which the drug was first approved as an effective treatment. Anaerobic bacteria which are typically sensitive are primarily Gram-negative anaerobes belonging to the Bacteroides and Fusobacterium spp. Gram-positive anaerobes such as peptostreptococci and Clostridia spp. are likely to test sensitive to m

Three repeated cross-sectional surveys were undertaken among children (1 month to 15 years) of a rural community in southeastern Tanzania. The study was part of a longitudinal project on the interactions among nutrition, parasitic infections and immunity within a primary health care programme emphasizing village health workers. All children underwent interviews and parasitological, anthropometric, anamnestic and clinical examinations. Out of 550-590 children examined each year, a cohort of 170 children could be followed for three consecutive years. Malaria was holo- to hyperendemic in the comm

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Zoonotic intestinal parasites remain a neglected public health problem in low-resource coastal communities where humans, free-roaming dogs, and contaminated environments interact closely. Cartagena, Colombia, lacks updated epidemiological data on intestinal parasitosis despite its high tourist influx and vulnerable populations. This study applied a One Health framework to investigate the prevalence of intestinal parasites in humans, dogs, and soil in two coastal regions of Cartagena (La Boquilla and Punta Arenas) and to identify associated risk factors and clinical manifest

BACKGROUND: There is significant need for accurate diagnostic tools for Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia duodenalis infections in resource limited countries where diarrhoeal disease caused by these parasites is often prevalent. The present study assessed the diagnostic performance of three commercially available rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) based on faecal-antigen detection for Cryptosporidium spp. and/or G. duodenalis infections in stool samples of children admitted with severe acute malnutrition (SAM) and diarrhoea. An established multiplex PCR was used as reference test.
METHODS: Stool sa

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections (IPIs) particularly soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STH) and schistosomiasis are among neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) globally. Apart from being associated with anemia, malabsorption and retarded cognitive development these diseases are complicating the clinical picture of more serious infections like HIV, TB and malaria. Renewed and up-to-date information on the epidemiology of IPIs in more vulnerable groups such as irrigated-farm workers and prisoners would significantly contribute towards improving the health condition of such at-risk groups.

We worked with 185 middle-class patients above 18 years of age, both sexes, who presented diarrhea and/or chronic gastrointestinal disorders. The faeces were collected serially in formol 10% and processed in the following way: direct microscopy, with and without wet staining, concentration by Ritchie's method, 1% safranine technique for a specific investigation of Cryptosporidium sp., and faecal sieving macroparasites. Twenty eight point six of the studied patients showed at least one enteroparasite in their faeces, 48 harboured one parasite and 5 harboured two parasites. The following parasit

Significant differences exist in the prevalence of most gastroenterological emergencies in tropical compared with temperate countries. Both ethnic and environmental (often clearly defined geographically) factors are relevant. The major oesophageal lesions which can present acutely in tropical countries are varices and carcinoma; bleeding and obstruction are important sequelae. Peptic ulcer disease (and its complications), often associated (not necessarily causally) with Helicobacter pylori infection, has marked geographical variations in incidence. Emergencies involving the small intestine are

A case of amoebic colitis and liver abscess is described in a previously fit 59-year old man who had been given the incorrect diagnosis of ulcerative colitis. His symptoms were so severe that a colectomy was being considered. The patient had a significant travel history including trips to Morocco, the Gambia and Cape Verde, putting him at risk of acquiring amoebic disease. However, this history was not ascertained until much later on in the disease process. The case highlighted crucial learning points including the importance of taking a lifelong travel history, the difficulties in telling ulc

On 18 September 2013, the Gipuzkoa Epidemiology Unit was notified of an outbreak of acute gastroenteritis (AGE) among employees at a domestic appliance factory. The first signs of the outbreak had emerged at the end of June and at the time of the notification 30 workers were on sick leave for gastroenteritis. Some employees had had more than one episode and the main symptoms were diarrhoea and vomiting. An investigation began to identify the causative agent, assess exposure and determine the route of transmission. Data collected by a questionnaire identified 302 episodes of AGE among 238 peopl

We report a rare case of amebiasis generating 19 large liver abscesses. Such a quantity of abscesses is rare, especially when occurring in a young casual traveler without any immunodeficiency disorders. A possible co-infection was excluded. By contrast, the amebic etiology was confirmed by means of serology and real-time PCR.

Serum samples of 31 amebic liver abscess (ALA) patients, 8 amebic hepatitis (AH) patients, and 60 controls were tested for anti-amebic IgG by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and indirect fluorescent antibody tests (IFAT). Sera of 29 (93.6%) ALA and 6 (75%) AH patients and 2 (3.3%) control subjects were positive by IFAT. Anti-amebic antibody titer above the cutoff point (= 0.168; x + 2 SD of control sera) was observed in sera of 27 (87%) ALA, 4 (50%) AH, and 1 (1.7%) control by ELISA. All the 8 pus samples were positive for anti-amebic antibodies by IFAT and ELISA. Sensitivity of ELIS
