The Prevention of Developmental Delay and Xylitol (PDDaX) trial: study protocol of a nested cohort follow-up from the PPaX (Prevention of Prematurity and Xylitol) trial examining neurodevelopmental outcomes among offspring at 4-8 years of age in Malawi.

BACKGROUND: We recently conducted the cluster-randomized, Prevention of Prematurity and Xylitol (PPaX) trial which demonstrated a significant reduction in the occurrence of delivery of preterm and low birthweight deliveries from mothers who used twice-daily xylitol-containing chewing gum in pregnancy as compared to active control among n = 10,069 enrolled pregnant participants in Lilongwe, Malawi. We seek to determine the neurodevelopmental outcomes, including any benefits or harm, of a nested cohort of n = 1000 children delivered among participants of the PPaX trial. METHODS: The Prevention

The first case report of chylous ascites in a twin pregnancy following in vitro fertilization: a case report of chylous ascites in twin pregnancy.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Chylous ascites is an exceptionally rare condition during pregnancy, typically presenting with nonspecific symptoms. To date, only a limited number of cases have been reported in the literature, and the majority of which occurred in singleton pregnancies. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 25-year-old woman with a twin pregnancy who was admitted at 32 weeks of gestation with acute abdominal pain and nausea. Due to persistent severe pain, unexplained intraperitoneal fluid, and progressing labor, an emergent cesarean section was performed. Intraoperatively,

Temporal associations between microclimate, adult Aedes mosquito indices, and dengue cases at the residence level in Malaysia: Implications for targeted interventions.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue continues to be a major public health concern in Malaysia, as evidenced by the significant surge in cumulative dengue case numbers and deaths in 2023 compared to the previous year. While previous studies have explored the interplay of abiotic and biotic factors of mosquito density and dengue cases on a local scale in Malaysia, there is a notable gap in the research focusing on adult Aedes mosquito populations. AIMS: This study aims to contribute to the existing knowledge by investigating the association and time lags (TLs) between daily microclimate (DM), mosquito indices

Assessment of vector control strategies based on mass Aedes (Stegomyia) mosquito trapping (AGOs traps) pilot study in a US-Mexico border region of South Texas.

BACKGROUND: Aedes (Stegomyia) aegypti and Ae. (Stegomyia) albopictus mosquitoes are major vectors of diseases including dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever. The excessive use of chemical insecticides has caused resistance in mosquito populations, along with negative environmental impacts and harm to non-target organisms. In this regard, mosquito control strategies, such as passive mass trapping interventions with autocidal gravid ovitraps (AGO) offer a promising alternative. Here we report the results of a pilot study evaluating a passive mass trapping treatment using AGOs against Ae.

Antennal transcriptome analysis reveals sensory receptors potentially associated with host detection in the livestock pest Lucilia cuprina.

BACKGROUND: Lucilia cuprina (Wiedemann, 1830) (Diptera: Calliphoridae) is the main causative agent of flystrike of sheep in Australia and New Zealand. Female flies lay eggs in an open wound or natural orifice, and the developing larvae eat the host's tissues, a condition called myiasis. To improve our understanding of host-seeking behavior, we quantified gene expression in male and female antennae based on their behavior. METHODS: A spatial olfactometer was used to evaluate the olfactory response of L. cuprina mated males and gravid females to fresh or rotting beef. Antennal RNA-Seq analysis

Planococcus ficus (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) movement and demography: methods for generating cohorts for laboratory studies.

Planococcus ficus (Signoret) is a worldwide pest of grapevine. Mealybugs overwinter under bark and move into the grape canopy as the season progresses. Because crawlers are more active than later stages, mealybug movement behavior is likely to be stage specific. To quantify P. ficus demography and movement behavior, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted. First, P. ficus populations were monitored on grapevine seedlings to describe survival, change in size, timing of male pupation, and timing of oviposition over a 6-wk period. Subsequently, cohorts of mealybugs were generated by inf

Reproductive health of Syrian refugee women in Lebanon: a descriptive analysis of the Sijilli electronic health records database.

BACKGROUND: The Syrian conflict has been responsible for the highest exodus of refugees, with Lebanon hosting the greatest number of refugees per capita, which placed a significant strain on an already overburdened healthcare system. Women are the most vulnerable group in times of conflict and displacement, with sexual and reproductive health and rights often neglected. This study focuses on the obstetric characteristics and pregnancy outcomes of Syrian Refugee (SR) women in Lebanon, in Comparison to their pre-displacement data. METHODS: This study is a secondary analysis of de-identified dat

Spatiotemporal distribution, abundance, and host interactions of two invasive vectors of arboviruses, Aedes albopictus and Aedes japonicus, in Pennsylvania, USA.

BACKGROUND: Aedes albopictus and Aedes japonicus, two invasive mosquito species in the United States, are implicated in the transmission of arboviruses. Studies have shown interactions of these two mosquito species with a variety of vertebrate hosts; however, regional differences exist and may influence their contribution to arbovirus transmission. METHODS: We investigated the distribution, abundance, host interactions, and West Nile virus infection prevalence of Ae. albopictus and Ae. japonicus by examining Pennsylvania mosquito and arbovirus surveillance data for the period between 2010 and

Common iliac vein stenting for May-Thurner syndrome and subsequent pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: For women with left common iliac vein compression (ie, May-Thurner syndrome) who undergo venous stenting and subsequently become pregnant, concerns have been raised regarding a possible compromise of stent patency due to compression from the gravid uterus and the hypercoagulability induced by pregnancy. Only a small body of literature exists on this subject, and limited management guidelines are available. The present study was designed to evaluate the safety of iliac vein stenting for May-Thurner syndrome (MTS) with subsequent pregnancy. METHODS: Female patients who had undergone

Pre-eclampsia screening in the first trimester - preemptive action to prevent the peril.

Pre-eclampsia complicating 2-5% of pregnancies is an obstetrical syndrome associated with deleterious short-and long-term consequences to the gravid women, the fetus and the neonate. Majority of the obstetrical complications occur in early pre-eclampsia (requiring delivery <34 weeks). The risk factor based approach recommended by the professional organizations for pre-eclampsia screening has shown suboptimal clinical performance. The combined multimarker screening for pre-eclampsia encompassing documentation of maternal medical history, measurement of mean arterial pressure, estimation of the

Identification of avian malaria (Plasmodium sp.) and canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) in the mosquitoes of Tennessee.

Plasmodium reticulum, the causative agent for avian malaria (a protozoan), and Dirofilaria immitis, the causative agent for canine heartworm (a filarial nematode), are 2 obligate parasites transmitted by mosquitoes. The objective of this project was to identify whether either parasite was present in Tennessee mosquitoes and to illustrate the need for collecting spatial and temporal vector-parasite data. During 2012, mosquitoes were collected from the East Tennessee Research and Education Center (ETREC) in eastern Tennessee and the Ames Plantation Research and Education Center (AMES) in western
