Multiplex detection and application of MALDI-TOF NAMS for porcine diarrheal pathogens.

UNLABELLED: Porcine diarrheal diseases caused by mixed viral and bacterial infections pose significant challenges to swine health and production. Rapid and accurate identification of key pathogens, including porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV), porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), porcine rotavirus (PoRV), swine acute diarrhea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), porcine bocavirus (PBoV), hepatitis E virus (HEV), and Salmonella, remains a challenge due to overlapping clinical symptoms and co-infections. The zoonotic potential of HEV and PBoV also highlig

Immunological quality of colostrum and specific antibodies against enteropathogens in the colostrum and transition milk of crossbred Gir × Holstein cows.

Colostrum management is crucial for enhancing the immune response against enteropathogens and the survival of dairy calves during the first few weeks of life. However, few physiological studies have investigated the dynamics of general and specific immunoglobulin G (IgG) content in cow milk during early lactation stages, particularly in that of crossbred Gir × Holstein dairy cows, the most predominant dairy cattle population in tropical countries, such as Brazil. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of parity and milking order on the volume and quality of colostrum, transition milk, and

[The new National Immunization Program 2017-2019 and the Essential Care Levels: what is going to change?].

Italy is witnessing relevant challenges in the field of prevention and control of vaccine-preventable diseases. The worrying and growing phenomenon of "vaccine-hesitancy" has contributed to the reduction of vaccination coverage, undermining goals reached thanks to vaccines introduction. The new Italian National Immunization Plan (NIP) 2017-2019 and the update of the list of Essential Care Levels (LEA), approved in the current year, extend the vaccination offer based on the latest scientific evidence with the introduction of new vaccines and the enlargement of target population. The decree-law

Lessons learned from a review of the development of selected vaccines. National Vaccine Advisory Committee.

BACKGROUND: Although the vaccine research and development network in the United States remains vibrant, its continued success requires maintaining harmonious interaction among its many components. Changing one component is likely to affect the system overall. An examination of case studies of the development of selected vaccines would allow an examination of the network as a whole. This article presents conclusions drawn from the case study review undertaken. OBJECTIVE: Successful development of vaccines is a time-intensive process requiring years of commitment from a network of scientists an

Evaluation of the safety, immunogenicity, and faecal shedding of novel oral polio vaccine type 2 in healthy newborn infants in Bangladesh: a randomised, controlled, phase 2 clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 circulating vaccine-derived polioviruses (cVDPV2) from Sabin oral poliovirus vaccines (OPVs) are the leading cause of poliomyelitis. A novel type 2 OPV (nOPV2) has been developed to be more genetically stable with similar tolerability and immunogenicity to that of Sabin type 2 vaccines to mitigate the risk of cVDPV2. We aimed to assess these aspects of nOPV2 in poliovirus vaccine-naive newborn infants. METHODS: In this randomised, double-blind, controlled, phase 2 trial we enrolled newborn infants at the Matlab Health Research Centre, Chandpur, Bangladesh. We included infan

Effect of mobile phone text message reminders on improving completeness and timeliness of routine childhood vaccinations in North-West, Ethiopia: a study protocol for randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Non-attendance and delay in vaccination schedules remain a big challenge to healthcare workers. With the continuous growth of mobile network coverage and exponential penetration of mobile devices in the developing world, adoption of short message service has been shown to increase attendance for health services by targeting participant characteristics such as forgetfulness. Therefore, the aim of this trial is to determine the effect of mobile text message reminders on completeness and timeliness of childhood vaccination in North-West, Ethiopia. Infection-triggered encephalopathy syndromes: a meta-analysis of clinical characteristics and outcomes in 1946 cases.

BACKGROUND: Infection-triggered encephalopathy syndromes (ITES) are acute, para-infectious disorders that can cause disability or death. Recognition is increasingly important in viral pandemics, but clinical features and outcomes remain poorly understood. METHODS: PubMed search (inception to 6 March 2024) identified studies with published individual patient data (raw data were not collected from authors). The search was updated on 14 May 2026 using the same terms to identify reports and cases published after the data extraction cutoff. Data were extracted by paediatric neurologists using a st

[Coverage, mapping and barriers to complete vaccination for age among children under 5 years in 2021: case of Adjara-Hounvè and Ahouicodji villages in southern Benin].

BACKGROUND: Vaccination is a protective measure against infectious diseases and remains one of the best investments in public health. Some African countries are still struggling to reach the required child immunization coverage. Several factors are responsible for limiting immunization coverage. Most of the factors considered to limit immunization coverage are related to the health system. In addition, inaccessibility to care, especially during the critical period of the Covid-19 pandemic, greatly reduced vaccination coverage rates. In Benin, several vaccines are included in the Expanded Progr

Synthetic retinoid AM80 inhibits IL-17 production of gamma delta T cells and ameliorates biliary atresia in mice.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Recent evidence suggests that Interleukin (IL)-17-producing gamma delta ( γδ ) T cells are the dominant pathogenic cellular component in designated autoimmune or inflammatory diseases, including biliary atresia (BA). We have previously demonstrated that retinoids effectively suppress T-helper cell (Th) 17 differentiation. METHODS: Here, we established an in vitro system, enabling investigations of the effect of AM80 on the IL-17 production of γδ T cells. Additionally, we tested the therapeutic effect of AM80 in the Rotavirus-induced mouse model of BA. Co-incubation of γδ T

Routine childhood immunisation during the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa: a benefit-risk analysis of health benefits versus excess risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

BACKGROUND: National immunisation programmes globally are at risk of suspension due to the severe health system constraints and physical distancing measures in place to mitigate the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We aimed to compare the health benefits of sustaining routine childhood immunisation in Africa with the risk of acquiring severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection through visiting routine vaccination service delivery points. METHODS: We considered a high-impact scenario and a low-impact scenario to approximate the child deaths that could be caused by immunis

Thermodynamic equilibrium dose-response models for MERS-CoV infection reveal a potential protective role of human lung mucus but not for SARS-CoV-2.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) and Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) infect the human respiratory tract. A prototype thermodynamic equilibrium model is presented here for the probability of the virions getting through the mucus barrier and infecting epithelial cells based on the binding affinity (Kmucin) of the virions to mucin molecules in the mucus and parameters for binding and infection of the epithelial cell. Both MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2 bind strongly to their cellular receptors, DDP4 and ACE2, respectively, and infect very efficiently b

Targeted localized use of therapeutic antibodies: a review of non-systemic, topical and oral applications.

Therapeutic antibodies provide important tools in the "medicine chest" of today's clinician for the treatment of a range of disorders. Typically monoclonal or polyclonal antibodies are administered in large doses, either directly or indirectly into the circulation, via a systemic route which is well suited for disseminated ailments. Diseases confined within a specific localized tissue, however, may be treated more effectively and at reduced cost by a delivery system which targets directly the affected area. To explore the advantages of the local administration of antibodies, we reviewed curren

Cross-protection studies between respiratory and calf diarrhea and winter dysentery coronavirus strains in calves and RT-PCR and nested PCR for their detection.

A 1-step RT-PCR assay, targeting a 730 bp fragment of the nucleocapsid (N) gene of bovine coronavirus (BCV), and a nested PCR assay, targeting a 407 bp fragment of the N gene, were developed to detect BCV in nasal swab and fecal samples of calves experimentally exposed to BCV. Both 1-step RT-PCR and nested PCR recognized cell culture passaged isolates of 10 bovine respiratory coronavirus (BRCV), 5 calf diarrhea (CD) and 8 winter dysentery (WD) strains of BCV, but not transmissible gastroenteritis coronavirus or bovine rotavirus. The sensitivity of the 1-step RT-PCR and nested PCR was compared
