The Effect of Formant Biofeedback on the Feminization of Voice in Transgender Women.

Differences in formant frequencies between men and women contribute to the perception of voices as masculine or feminine. This study investigated whether visual-acoustic biofeedback can be used to help transgender women achieve formant targets typical of cisgender women, and whether such a shift influences the perceived femininity of speech. Transgender women and a comparison group of cisgender males were trained to produce vowels in a word context while also attempting to make a visual representation of their second formant (F2) line up with a target that was shifted up relative to their base

Molecular screening for Neisseria gonorrhoeae antimicrobial resistance markers in Nigerian men who have sex with men and transgender women.

Antimicrobial-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) is a global public health issue that threatens effectiveness of current treatments of NG. Increased use of nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) in lieu of cultures makes obtaining clinical isolates for susceptibility testing difficult and samples collected in commercial transport buffer for NAATs do not preserve viable organism, while molecular methods of assessing antibiotic susceptibility do not require viable organism. We evaluated 243 NG-positive samples in Aptima transport media including urine, oral, and rectal swabs from Nigerian me

High impact of sleeping problems on quality of life in transgender individuals: A cross-sectional multicenter study.

INTRODUCTION: Studies in the general population suggest that determinants of QoL are often sex-dependent. Sex-dependent analyses of QoL in transgender populations have not been performed so far. AIM: To identify sex-specific and potentially modifiable determinants of QoL in transgender patients. METHODS: In this cross-sectional multicentre study including 82 transwomen (TW) and 72 transmen (TM) at different treatment stages, we investigated potential determinants for QoL focusing on the impact of mood (BDI, STAI-X), sleep quality (PSQI), chronic pain (GPQ), body image (FBeK) and social suppo

The inner foreskin of healthy males at risk of HIV infection harbors epithelial CD4+ CCR5+ cells and has features of an inflamed epidermal barrier.

Male circumcision provides partial protection against multiple sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV, but the mechanisms are not fully understood. To examine potential vulnerabilities in foreskin epithelial structure, we used Wilcoxon paired tests adjusted using the false discovery rate method to compare inner and outer foreskin samples from 20 healthy, sexually active Peruvian males who have sex with males or transgender females, ages 21-29, at elevated risk of HIV infection. No evidence of epithelial microtrauma was identified, as assessed by keratinocyte activation, fibronec

Overcoming biological, behavioral, and structural vulnerabilities: new directions in research to decrease HIV transmission in men who have sex with men.

Men who have sex with men (MSM), including transgender women, comprise a heterogeneous group of individuals whose sexual behaviors and gender identities may vary widely between cultures and among individuals. Their sources of increased vulnerability to HIV are diverse, including the increased efficiency of HIV transmission via unprotected anal intercourse, sexual role versatility, asymptomatic sexually transmitted infections, and behavioral factors that may be associated with condomless sex with multiple partners. Societal stigmatization of homosexual behavior and gender nonconformity may resu

High Willingness to Use and Recommend Doxycycline Postexposure Prophylaxis for Bacterial Sexually Transmitted Infection Prevention in Peru.

BACKGROUND: Bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain prevalent among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) in Peru. Doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP) is a promising prevention strategy, but data from Latin America remain limited. METHODS: We conducted 2 online surveys in Lima, Peru (September-October 2024). One assessed willingness to use doxy-PEP among MSM and TGW; the other assessed willingness to recommend doxy-PEP among health care providers (HCPs). Logistic regression evaluated correlates of high willingness. RESULTS: Of 730 eligible MS

Cervical Papanicolaou tests in the female-to-male transgender population: should the adequacy criteria be revised in this population? An Institutional Experience.

INTRODUCTION: It is recommended that female-to-male (FTM) transgender patients with a cervix follow the same cervical cancer screening guidelines as cisgender women. This study analyzes Papanicolaou tests, HPV results, and follow-up histology in FTM patients, and compares those results to other atrophic populations at our institution. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cohort of FTM patients receiving androgen therapy was identified through our institution's translational research database. We collected data on Papanicolaou tests, human papillomavirus (HPV) results, follow-up surgical procedures, and d

Risk and Protective Factors for Self-Harm in a Population-Based Sample of Transgender Youth.

This study sought to identify factors distinguishing transgender/gender non-conforming (GNC) adolescents across three groups: no self-harm, non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) only, and NSSI and suicide attempt (NSSI + SA). Data were from the 2016 Minnesota Student Survey. The final analytic sample included 1,635 transgender/GNC students in grades 9 and 11. Logistic regression analyses determined factors that best distinguished transgender/GNC students who reported self-harm (NSSI only or NSSI + SA) from those who reported no self-harm, and transgender/GNC adolescents who reported NSSI + SA from t

Implementation of a Test, Treat, and Prevent HIV program among men who have sex with men and transgender women in Thailand, 2015-2016.

INTRODUCTION: Antiretroviral therapy reduces the risk of serious illness among people living with HIV and can prevent HIV transmission. We implemented a Test, Treat, and Prevent HIV Program among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women at five hospitals in four provinces of Thailand to increase HIV testing, help those who test positive start antiretroviral therapy, and increase access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). METHODS: We implemented rapid HIV testing and trained staff on immediate antiretroviral initiation at the five hospitals and offered PrEP at two hospitals. We re
