[Cooccurrence of catatonia, delirium and dementia in an elderly woman: A case report].

Catatonia is a severe but underrecognized neuropsychiatric syndrome that is frequently misdiagnosed as delirium or dementia in older adults, resulting in delayed and potentially inappropriate treatment. A 79-year-old woman was admitted for rapid cognitive decline, significant weight loss, and social withdrawal. Initial evaluations suggested major depressive disorder or dementia. Neurological investigations were inconclusive. Following the initiation of psychotropic medication, psychiatric assessment revealed mutism, posturing, and marked psychomotor retardation, fulfilling DSM-5 criteria for c

[Antibiomania: A Novel Presentation of a Case of Metronidazole-Induced Neurotoxicity].

Metronidazole is known to induce a characteristic encephalopathy, marked by neurological manifestations and typical MRI abnormalities, whereas psychiatric presentations remain rarely described. To date, no description of a frank manic symptomatology occurring concomitantly with metronidazole-induced encephalopathy has been reported in the literature. Antibiomania is a rare adverse effect defined by the onset of a manic or hypomanic episode in close temporal association with antibiotic exposure. We report the case of a 67-year-old man hospitalized for complex hepatobiliary complications and int

[A Delusion That Crawls: Ekbom Syndrome in Schizophrenia].

The objective of this case report is to present a clinical challenge encountered by a patient followed at the Institut universitaire en santé mentale de Montréal (IUSMM) Psychotic Disorders Program: the coexistence of Ekbom syndrome and schizophrenia. Schizophrenia and Ekbom syndrome (delusional parasitosis) are 2 distinct psychiatric entities, yet they share similarities regarding delusional conviction, lack of insight, and response to antipsychotic treatment. Ekbom syndrome can occur as a primary delusional disorder or as a secondary manifestation within the context of schizophrenia. The Ame

[An exploration of family functioning where one parent has Borderline Personality Disorder].

Introduction Being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) as a parent can undermine the overall functioning of the family, particularly the exercise of parental and marital roles. However, current knowledge about the general functioning of families in which a parent has such a diagnosis remains fragmented. It is therefore essential to better understand this reality in order to equip health and social service professionals who support these individuals and their families. Objectives The main objective of this study was to describe how each member of the parental couple with at lea

[The Integrated Psychological Treatment in correctional and forensic psychiatric settings: More than a decade of implementation and adaptation].

Introduction Implementing evidence-based psychosocial interventions is a challenge for most organizations providing mental health care. For correctional and forensic psychiatric settings, specific issues complicate implementation efforts. To ensure the viability of evidence-based practices, it is important that they are in line with the reality of the organization. An adaptation phase is often required following the initial implementation. However, this process remains poorly documented. This project focuses on the implementation in secure settings of a cognitive-behavioural group approach for

My Father's Car Stranded in the Flooded Desert: Art Therapy in the Face of Climate Chaos.

This reflective editorial essay emerges from a personal experience of being stranded for over 12 hours in a car during a sudden flood between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, an improbable confinement in the desert. As a psychiatrist, accustomed to listening and guiding others, I was instead confronted with my own stillness and isolation. In that immobility, I turned inward and found unexpected companionship in memory: the paintings of Philippe Lemaire, an artist I had met in a Montréal mental-health art workshop. For more than 2 decades, he has painted the same image, My Father's Car, transforming repeti

[AI based Evaluation of Psychotrauma related to Lahars in the Commune of Prêcheur in the French Antilles].

Objectives Natural disasters have a significant impact on mental health. Data collected from the population offer a unique opportunity for post-disaster monitoring to help identify psychological support needs. The aim of this study is: 1) to identify psychopathological aspects for the county of Prêcheur at risk from lahars (volcanic lava), and 2) to phenotype psychopathological aspects from data collected from the population. Method We applied an artificial intelligence (AI) assisted psycho-phenotyping method to data from 40 people over a 20-month period, to extract psychopathological and psyc

[Validation of a screening procedure for borderline personality disorder based on the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders].

Objectives The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) includes an Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (DSM-5), which defines personality disorders based on two dimensional criteria. Criterion A corresponds to the severity of personality dysfunction in the areas of self and interpersonal functioning, while Criterion B comprises five pathological domains including a total of 25 facets. Six specific disorders, including borderline personality disorder (BPD), are defined in the AMPD based on Criteria A and B. However, there is currently very litt

[Psychotherapy prognostic factors for personality disorders (PD) treatment: The role of self-reported questionnaires].

Objectives Dropout rates in psychotherapy are known to be high in patients with personality disorders (PD; ranging from 25% and 64% for Borderline PD). Faced with this observation, the Treatment Attrition-Retention Scale for Personality Disorders (TARS-PD; Gamache et coll., 2017) was developed to precisely identify patients with PD at high risk of abandoning therapy based on 15 criteria, regrouped in 5 factors: Pathological Narcissism, Antisocial/Psychopathy, Secondary Gain, Low Motivation, and Cluster A Features. However, we have limited knowledge about the relevance of self-reported question

Context Our team works in a psychiatric hospital unit at the University Hospitals of Geneva (Switzerland). We welcome there for 7 days people in crisis situations who have either suicidal thoughts or suicidal behavior. As factors precipitating the suicidal crisis, these people go through life events that are accompanied by intense interpersonal difficulties or that threaten the image they have of themselves. In our clinical population, approximately 35% of patients suffer from borderline personality disorder (BPD). In these patients, repeated crises and suicidal behavior lead to frequent and d

[Physical activity, sleep, and substance use in adults reporting a borderline personality disorder in France and Canada: An online study].

Introduction Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with many unhealthy behaviors. Psychoactive substance (alcohol and drugs) use is present in 78% of adults with BPD. Moreover, a poor sleep seems linked to the clinical profile of adults with BPD. Finally, some physical comorbid disorders like obesity, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes are linked to physical inactivity and sedentary behaviors. However, to this day no study analyzed these behaviors in French-speaking individuals with BPD. Objectives This study's goal is to document health behaviors in adults with BPD in Canada

[Beyond Housing: The Heterogenous Effect of Housing First on Criminal Justice Outcomes Among Homeless People With Mental Illness].

Background Housing First does not, on average, reduce criminal justice involvement. This analysis aims to test whether the overall absence of an impact is due to intervention effect heterogeneity as a function of the pattern of lifetime criminal justice involvement, identified through latent class analysis conducted through earlier work. Methods This analysis relied on data from the Montréal, Toronto and Vancouver sites of the Canadian At Home/Chez Soi randomized controlled trial, merged with administrative records of lifetime criminal charges (N = 1,321). [Mother suffering from borderline personality disorder: Which specific care in the periodal period? A literature review].

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common and severe disorder characterized by unstability of self-image, unstable affect, and unstable interpersonal relationships. Women with BPD would give birth as much as other women, but according to several studies, BPD mothers have a reduced sensitivity to their babies and a poor interpretation of their emotions; this would interfere in mother-baby interaction and in psycho-affective development of the baby, with the risk to develop psychiatric pathologies in adulthood. In this context several professionals have developed different interventions

[Effectiveness of Mobile Apps and Text Messaging as an E-mental Health Intervention for the Three Most Common Operational Stress Injuries among Public Safety Personnel: A Review of Meta-Analyses and Systematic Reviews].

Context The frequency of probable mental health diagnoses is much higher among public safety personnel (PSP) than in the general population, which can be explained in part by their operational duties. The most common operational stress injuries (OSI) among PSP in Canada are depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and generalized anxiety disorder. Because of their confidential and accessible nature, e-mental health interventions delivered via smartphones (mobile interventions) have great potential among PSP. The Mental Health Commission of Canada has proposed evaluative criteria for a compre

[From Kraepelin to McGorry: Scientific Vision and Experiential Narrative around a Major Paradigmatic Shift].

Objectives Until the early 1990s, a pessimistic view of psychotic disorders, based on the Kraepelinian perspective, prevailed. Early intervention then introduced a new paradigm, approaching psychosis as a more dynamic phenomenon, for which recovery is possible, provided an appropriate approach is used. As this paradigm has not penetrated all fields of psychiatry, professionals starting in early intervention sometimes experience a real culture shock, the objective of this article being to map its contours in order to facilitate this transition. Methods Based on their knowledge of the literature

Objectives The objectives of this paper are to explore the impact of psychological trauma and migration on a mother's ambivalence regarding her relationship with her child and to explore the effect on the child's "continuity of being." Methods Literature on the ambivalence of mothers who have experienced trauma and migration is reviewed. The authors present the hypothesis that the presence of trauma and/or migration exacerbate the phenomenon of ambivalence and that it may impact early interactions in mother-infant dyads. The stories of three migrant dyads are presented to illustrate these proc
