Sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) and rodents were collected in the endemic focus of urban cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sanliurfa, Turkey. Phlebotomus sergenti and P. papatasi represented 99% of the sand fly population. These flies were trapped in highest numbers in animal sheds, followed by cellars. However, P. sergenti was relatively more abundant in rooms. Diallyl sulfide (DAS) is a flavor compound derived from garlic and is sequentially converted to diallyl sulfoxide (DASO) and diallyl sulfone (DASO(2)) by cytochrome P(450) 2E1 (CYP2E1). These compounds have been shown to reduce the incidence of a multitude of chemically induced tumors in animal models. The impediment of phase I activation of these carcinogens is hypothesized to be accountable for the reduction in tumor incidence. Indeed, DAS, DASO and DASO(2) are competitive inhibitors of CYP2E1. BACKGROUND: The extent of the problem of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Jordan during the decade 1983 to 1992 was investigated.
METHODS: Data were collected from the dermatology departments and the laboratories of the Royal Medical Services and the Ministry of Health as well as from private dermatologists. Two thousand two hundred and ninety-five cases were verified of whom men represented 80%. Adult cynomolgus monkeys were administered trimethyltin (TMT) iv in dosages ranging from 0.75 to 4.0 mg TMT/kg and observed for behavioral changes. Animals were subsequently killed for light and electron microscopic examination. The mineralocorticoid receptor (MR) is highly conserved across vertebrate evolution. In this population-based study, we correlated possible risk factors for rodent-to-human transmission of Lassa virus with markers of Lassa fever in two different regions of the Republic of Guinea (Prefectures of Pita and Gueckedou).
