PURPOSE: Limited data are available on the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of extended spectrum β-lactamase- (ESBL) and AmpC β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in stray dogs. We aimed to investigate the genomic characteristics of ESBL/AmpC-producing E. coli isolated from stray dogs sheltered in Yangzhou, China.
METHODS: We collected 156 samples including 115 fecal swabs, 35 kennel floor swabs, two breeder hand and shoe sole swabs, and four feed samples. The isolates were tested for resistance by antimicrobial susceptibility testing and further analyzed for cefotaxime-resistant E.

Background: The literature reports evidence of leg length discrepancy (LLD) associated with musculoskeletal disorders, alterations in spinopelvic alignment, and body posture, leading to low back pain and lumbar scoliosis. The most common conservative treatment for LLD is the use of internal or external shoe lifts although no treatment guidelines have been established. Aim: The study aimed to contribute to low back pain-LLD relationship comprehension, highlighting the benefits of LLD correction in the nonspecific low back pain (NSLBP) population. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study r

A key issue for persons with leprosy-, lymphatic filariasis- and podoconiosis-related disabilities is the life-long need to practice self-management routines. This is difficult to sustain without regular encouragement and support of others. Family-based support may be a sustainable and feasible strategy to practice self-management routines. This proof of concept study aimed to develop and pilot a family-based intervention to support prevention and self-management of leprosy, lymphatic filariasis and podoconiosis-related disabilities in Ethiopia. We used a quasi-experimental pre/post interventi

BACKGROUND: The area beneath the metatarsal heads is a common location of foot pain, which is often associated with high plantar pressures. Current plantar pressure assessment protocols focus mainly on the gross area of the forefoot with minimal attention paid to specific areas such as the metatarsal heads. The aim of this study was to develop and assess a new anatomically-based masking protocol that is clinically relevant to measure forefoot plantar pressure during shod conditions based on the anatomical positions of the metatarsal heads.
METHODS: Initially, we developed a masking protocol t

BACKGROUND: Anecdotally, a wide variety of benefits of barefoot running have been advocated by numerous individuals. The influence of the alterations in the properties of the shoe on the running movement has been demonstrated in adults at submaximal jogging speeds. However, the biomechanical differences between shod and barefoot running in children at sprinting speeds and the potential developmental implications of these differences are still less examined. The purpose was to determine the potential differences in habitually shod children's sprint kinematics between shod and barefoot condition

The most common orthopaedic problems seen in toddlers are: (1) in-toeing due to femoral torsion, internal tibial torsion, talar torsion (persistent medial deviation of the neck of the talus), or metatarsus adductus; (2) genu valgus (bow-leg) and genu varus (knock-knee); and (3) pes valgus (flat-feet). In most cases these conditions will resolve spontaneously, as has been substantiated by a number of published studies. However, a small percentage of the disorders will persist if untreated. To prevent the deformity from becoming established and irreversible, treatment must begun while the patien

The root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne minor, was described during 2004 after it was found on potato roots in a field in the Netherlands and in golf courses in England, Wales, and Ireland (2). Since it is associated with yellow patch disease in turf grass and causes deformation of potato tubers (2), it is important to know whether this organism is already widespread in these and neighboring countries. In addition, it has a relatively wide host range (2,4). A small survey conducted in Belgium was comprised of 10 golf courses geographically spread over the country. In each location, 3 to 9 samples

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Reconstruction of large areas of soft tissue defects of the lower limb is a major challenge, particularly when the zone involves the lower part of the leg and the foot. The cross-leg flap can be a reliable alternative to free flaps, both in adults and children. We analyzed our experience in a retrospective series of 26 patients who underwent a standardize surgical procedure.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Twenty-six cross-leg flap procedures were performed between 1984 and 2000 using the same technique. Mean patient age was 32 years (range 7-67 years). All patients were trauma vi

Light therapy is a relatively novel modality in wound care. I used a light-emitting diode (LED) and superluminous diode (SLD) to deliver low-intensity laser light as an adjunctive treatment to a patient with a chronic diabetic foot ulcer. Standard treatment of conservative sharp debridement, off-loading, bioburden management, and advanced dressings was delivered in a WOC clinic setting. This combination of therapies resulted in closure of the neuropathic plantar ulcer within 8 weeks.

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy is increasingly used in the management of problem wounds, notably diabetic foot ulcers. However, concerns about unnecessary, inappropriate, and prolonged use of this adjunctive treatment exist. A case report of a 52-year-old patient with diabetes mellitus, Charcot foot, and a nonhealing plantar ulcer who had received HBO treatments only illustrates these concerns. He presented with normal pedal pulses, adequate transcutaneous partial oxygen pressure levels, no offloading footwear, and a heavily contaminated ulcer (Pseudomonas spp.). Following a course of oral an
