[Bombali virus (Filoviridae: Orthoebolavirus: Orthoebolavirus bombaliense)].

INTRODUCTION: Members of genus Orthoebolavirus of family Filoviridae cause severe hemorrhagic fever in humans with high fatality rates (up to 90%). The first outbreaks of disease caused by the members of genus Orthoebolavirus were registered in 1976 in Zaire and Sudan. The outbreaks of disease caused by the members of genus Orthoebolavirus occur regularly in Africa. The largest outbreak (for all history of monitoring) happened in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra-Leone in 2013-2016. During this outbreak, the cases of disease importation in non-endemic regions were registered. The foci of circulation of

Bardet-Biedl syndrome: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Bardet-Biedl syndrome is a rare multisystem autosomal recessive disorder that falls under the spectrum of ciliopathy disorders. It is characterized by rod-cone dystrophy, renal malformations, polydactyly, learning difficulties, central obesity, and hypogonadism. Many minor features that are related with Bardet-Biedl syndrome might aid in diagnosis and are crucial in clinical management. Bardet-Biedl syndrome is diagnosed on the basis of clinical signs and symptoms, which can be confirmed by genetic testing. Here we present four cases of Bardet-Biedl syndrome. To our knowledge, thes

[Discussion on the curative effect and mechanisms of berberine in rats with non-alcoholic fatty liver].

Objective: To observe the curative effects of berberine in rats with high-fat diet induced non-alcoholic fatty liver and to further explore its possible mechanism. Methods: Twenty-six Sprague-Dawley rats (120-160 g) were randomly divided into 3 groups: control group (n = 8), model group (n = 10) and treatment group (n = 8). Rats in the control group were fed with regular diet, and the model group and the treatment group were fed a high-fat diet. At the 12th week, two rats in the in the model group were sacrificed to verify whether model was successful established. Subsequently, treatment group

The association between medical spending and health status: A study of selected African countries.

BACKGROUND: The report from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that health spending worldwide remains highly unequal as more than 80% of the world's population live in low and middle-income countries but only account for about 20% of global health expenditure. Another report by the WHO on the state of health financing in Africa published in 2013 intimates that countries that are part of their member states are still on the average level in meeting set goals in financing key health projects. OBJECTIVE: The study set out to investigate the association between public and private spendin

Necrotic ulcer: a manifestation of leukemia cutis.

A 71-year-old man presented to our dermatological clinic with a 3-month history of a wound on his leg. He complained of weakness for the past few months. On his dermatological examination he had a 3x3-cm necrotic ulcer on his left tibia (Figure 1). On physical examination, there was 1 x 1-cm axillary lymphadenopathy. There was no other lymph node enlargement, hepatosplenomegaly, or gingival hypertrophy. Peripheral blood results showed 2.4x103/mm3 leukocytes (normal range 4-11 x 103/mm3) with 66% neutrophils. The hemoglobin value was 10.1 g/dL (13-18 g/dL), and the platelet count was 63x103/mm3

Lethal accidents in storage equipment: a report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Enterococcus faecium is an opportunistic pathogen of humans with diverse hosts, encompassing animals as well as human beings. In the past twenty years, there has been a rise in the instances of nosocomial infections that are linked to antibiotic-resistant Enterococcus faecium. The acquisition of diverse antimicrobial resistance factors has driven the global development of robust and convergent adaptive mechanisms within the healthcare environment. The presence of microorganisms in hospitalized and non-hospitalized patient populations has been significantly aided by the facilitation

[Breastfeeding in Africa: will positive trends be challenged by the AIDS epidemic?].

In Africa, more than 95% of infants are currently breastfed, but feeding practices are often inadequate: feeding water, and other liquids, to breastfed infants is a widespread practice. Consequently, the rate of exclusive breast-feeding is low, particularly in West Africa. The rate of bottle-feeding is high in some countries (exceeding 30% in Tunisia, Nigeria, Namibia and Sudan). Nevertheless prolonged breastfeeding is common, and the median duration of breastfeeding ranges between 16 and 28 months. Urbanization and mothers' education are the major factors that tend to shorten breastfeeding. N

Radiolabeled MDA2, an oxidation-specific, monoclonal antibody, identifies native atherosclerotic lesions in vivo.

BACKGROUND: Oxidatively modified low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is present in atherosclerotic but not normal arteries and plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis and adverse consequences of atherosclerotic lesions. We previously generated a series of monoclonal antibodies (MoAb) against oxidation-specific neo-epitopes formed during the oxidative modification of LDL. MDA2, a prototype MoAb, recognizes malondialdehyde-lysine epitopes (eg, in malondi-aldehyde-modified LDL) within atherosclerotic lesions. We describe the in vivo characteristics of MDA2 and initial noninvasive imaging studies of at

The reliability of cytoplasmic CD3 and CD22 antigen expression in the immunodiagnosis of acute leukemia: a study of 500 cases.

Current views about the origin of acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL) emphasize the importance of maturation arrest at a precursor cell level. Recently, the CD22 antigen has been identified in the cytoplasm of normal bone marrow-borne immature B lineage cells, while the CD3 antigen (epsilon chain) has been detected within normal immature thymic blasts. In the first part our study performed on 100 cases of known acute leukemias, the expression of such cytoplasmic molecules, referred to as cCD22 and cCD3, was analyzed together with their appearance in the leukemic cells' membrane (mCD22 and mCD3). The

The Influence of Genetic Polymorphisms in Cytochrome P450 (CYP1A1 and 2D6) Gene on the Susceptibility to Philadelphia Negative Chronic Myeloid Leukemia in Sudanese Patients.

The most frequent type of leukemia in Africa is chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). The genetic background of the rarer Philadelphia chromosome (Ph) Ph-ve (BCR-ABL-ve) subform of CML is largely unknown in African patients. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to investigate the role of CYP1A1 and 2D6 SNPs in the pathogenesis of Ph-ve CML in the Sudanese population. A total of 126 patients were selected for analysis. DNA was isolated from Ph-ve CML patients and a control group for PCR-RFLP analysis of SNPs CYP1A1*2C and CYP2D6*4. The CYP1A1 gene significantly expressed the GG variant genotype (p < 0.

Childhood idiopathic steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome at a Single Center in Khartoum.

Prevalence, clinicopathological features, and outcome of childhood idiopathic steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (ISRNS) vary in different countries. We report on these parameters in a single center in Khartoum. We retrospectively reviewed all the records of children with idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS) followed up in the pediatric renal unit, Soba Hospital, Khartoum between 2001 and 2012. ISRNS was defined as no remission within four weeks of daily prednisolone at a dose of 60 mg/m2. In 430 children with INS 130 (28%) had SRNS with a mean age of 7.7 ± 4.12 years. Males were 78 (60%). From Golden Hour to Hospital Survivability: Treatment-System Degradation as the New Center of Gravity in Modern Military Medicine.

Military medicine has been organized for 2 decades around the time interval between injury and definitive surgical care. The Golden Hour mandate in Afghanistan, paired with Tactical Combat Casualty Care guidelines and damage-control resuscitation, produced some of the lowest battlefield mortality rates in the history of armed conflict. More recent conflicts complicate this framework. In northwest Syria, deliberate attacks on hospitals reduced outpatient and trauma care for weeks following each strike, with population-level reductions in service use rather than individual mortality the dominant

Genetic Characterisation and Risk Factors Associated With Capripoxvirus Outbreaks Among Small Ruminants in Uganda, 2021-2022.

BACKGROUND: Sheeppox and goatpox are systemic, contagious viral diseases of small ruminants caused by sheep and goat pox viruses of the genus capripoxvirus. These diseases cause fever, generalised skin lesions and negatively affect health, economics and welfare. Between 2011 and 2020, an average of four clinically suspected Capripox outbreaks were reported annually in Uganda through passive surveillance. However, information on the genetic characteristics of circulating capripoxviruses affecting remains limited. We conducted this study to (i) genetically characterise capripoxvirus strains asso

Making space for happenstance: a proposal for a different 'Theory of Change' to help understand and guide NTD policymaking practices.

BACKGROUND: Historically, neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) have received far less global attention than the ‘big three’ diseases of global health (HIV, TB, and malaria), reinforcing health inequities experienced by those affected. Policy advocacy has been a necessary part of the work of NTD specialists, including researchers. One commonly used tool to support planned change is Theory of Change (ToC), employed by organisations such as the World Health Organization, non-governmental organisations, and research funders, who often require ToC diagrams at proposal stage. However, ToC practices ca

Risk factors associated with mental health symptoms among health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic in EMRO countries: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: During the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare workers (HCWs) have been psychologically impacted by SARS-CoV-2. The pandemic presented substantial challenges to healthcare systems globally. Given the limited data available from EMRO countries, our systematic review aimed to specifically examine risk factors correlated with mental health symptoms among HCWs within this region. METHODS: We investigated PubMed, Scopus, and Embase databases from January 2020 to August 2024. Relevant research articles that examined risk factors correlated with mental health symptoms among HCWs during

Colorimetric RT-LAMP for SARS-CoV-2 detection from nasopharyngeal swabs or crude saliva: a multicountry diagnostic accuracy study in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Reverse-transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP) with colorimetric readout is a rapid, robust, and cost-effective one-step amplification assay that we previously trialled for the identification of SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal swabs in four countries. Here, we expanded our assessment of RT-LAMP for SARS-CoV-2 detection to several other African countries and evaluated its operational performance with crude saliva as a pragmatic approach for outbreak surveillance and response in resource-limited settings. METHODS: We conducted a multicountry diagnostic accuracy
