[Anxiety disorders in private practice psychiatric out-patients: prevalence, comorbidity and burden (DELTA study)].

Few data are currently available on the prevalence and associated characteristics of anxiety disorders in psychiatric out-patients in France, in particular in the private health-care. However, this represents one of the principal systems of care for patients suffering from anxiety disorders, with a possible direct access and several types of treatments available (pharmacotherapy but also different kinds of psychotherapy). The aim of our study was to describe the prevalence of anxiety disorders in a large sample of patients consulting in the private sector, and in addition to study the comorbid

Feared consequences of panic attacks in panic disorder: a qualitative and quantitative analysis.

Cognitions are hypothesized to play a central role in panic disorder (PD). Previous studies have used questionnaires to assess cognitive content, focusing on prototypical cognitions associated with PD; however, few studies have qualitatively examined cognitions associated with the feared consequences of panic attacks. The purpose of this study was to conduct a qualitative and quantitative analysis of feared consequences of panic attacks. The initial, qualitative analysis resulted in the development of 32 categories of feared consequences. The categories were derived from participant responses

CBT for anxiety and associated somatic complaints in pediatric medical settings: an open pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the initial feasibility and potential efficacy of a cognitive-behavioral intervention for youth with anxiety disorders and non-medical somatic symptoms. BACKGROUND: Based on a strong relationship between somatic complaints and anxiety disorders, screening youngsters seeking medical care due to physical symptoms with no organic basis may enhance the recognition of anxiety disorders and facilitate access to appropriate services. METHOD: Seven boys and girls, ages 8 through 15, with medically unexplained gastrointestinal complaints and anxiety disorders received a 12-sessi

Psychological characteristics of patients applying for treatment in a dental fear clinic.

The aim of the present study was to assess psychological characteristics of highly anxious dental patients. Subjects were 321 patients (203 women) applying for treatment at a dental fear clinic in The Netherlands. Patients filled out several questionnaires to assess the amount of psychological complaints (Dutch version of the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised; SCL-90) and dental anxiety (Dental Anxiety Scale, Short version of the Dental Anxiety Inventory) approximately 4 months prior to their first appointment. The total mean score on the SCL-90 for the highly anxious patients was 142.7 (SD=47.2) f

Identifying children with anxiety disorders using brief versions of the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale for children, parents, and teachers.

Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent mental health disorders experienced by children and are associated with significant negative outcomes. Only a minority of affected children, however, access professional help, and a failure to identify children with anxiety disorders presents a key barrier to treatment access. Existing child anxiety questionnaire measures are long and time consuming to complete, limiting their potential for widespread use as identification tools in community settings. We developed a brief questionnaire for parents, children, and teachers using items from the Spenc

In-situation safety behaviors among patients with panic disorder: descriptive and correlational study.

AIM: In-situation safety behaviors play an important role in the maintenance of anxiety because they prevent patients from experiencing unambiguous disconfirmation of their unrealistic beliefs about feared catastrophes. Strategies for identifying particular safety behaviors, however, have not been sufficiently investigated. The aims of the present study were to (i) develop a comprehensive list of safety behaviors seen in panic disorder and to examine their frequency; and (ii) correlate the safety behaviors with panic attack symptoms, agoraphobic situations and treatment response. METHODS: The

Anticipatory anxiety as a function of panic attacks and panic-related self-efficacy: an ambulatory assessment study in panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Panic attacks and anticipatory anxiety are considered to be inter-correlated, yet distinctive, features of panic disorder, both contributing to its onset and maintenance as well as to the associated impairment. Given the difficulty to yield ecologically valid data on these fluctuating symptoms the natural course of anticipatory anxiety and its correlates have seldom been addressed with adequate methods. AIMS: The current study aimed at further exploring the natural variance of anticipatory anxiety and its interdependence with panic-related variables. In addition, impact of anxiety

Hypofrontality in panic disorder and major depressive disorder assessed by multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder is a common and debilitating psychiatric disease; yet, the neurobiology of this disorder is not fully understood. Deficits in the prefrontal inhibitory control over hyperactivity of the anxiety-related neural circuit are implicated in the pathophysiological core of panic disorder. The aims of this study were to investigate whether panic disorder reveals frontal lobe dysfunction while performing the word fluency test by using multi-channel near-infrared spectroscopy and to compare the findings in panic disorder with those in major depressive disorder. METHODS: Twenty

Panic disorder in later life: results from a national survey of Canadians.

BACKGROUND: At present, our understanding of the risk markers associated with panic disorder among older, community dwelling older adults is limited. To address this gap, we examined the prevalence, risk markers, and comorbidity of panic disorder defined using DSM-IV criteria among older adults. METHOD: Using data drawn from a large, nationally representative sample of Canadians, we estimated lifetime and 12-month prevalence of panic disorder, and examined demographic predictors and patterns of comorbidity of current panic disorder in adults aged 55 years and older (n = 12,792). RESULTS: The

Temperamental correlates of disruptive behavior disorders in young children: preliminary findings.

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to test the hypothesis that temperamental behavioral disinhibition measured in early childhood would be associated with disruptive behavior disorders. METHODS: We used variables from laboratory-based behavioral observations originally devised to assess behavioral inhibition to construct a theory-based a priori definition of "behavioral disinhibition" in 200 young children at-risk for panic disorder, depression, or both and 84 children of parents without anxiety or major depressive disorder. We then compared behaviorally disinhibited and nonbehaviorally disinhibit

An Internet-based investigation of the catastrophic misinterpretation model of panic disorder.

The catastrophic misinterpretation (CM) model of panic disorder proposes that spontaneous panic attacks are the result of interpretation of harmless autonomic arousal as precursors to physical (e.g., heart attack) or psychological (e.g., insanity) emergency. Mixed research findings to date have provided equivocal support. The body sensations interpretation questionnaire-modified was administered via Internet to investigate core assumptions of the model among 30 people with panic disorder (PD), 28 with social anxiety disorder (SAD), and 30 non-anxious controls. The PD group gave more harm-relat

Effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Provided Through a Web Application for Subthreshold Depression, Subthreshold Insomnia, and Subthreshold Panic: Open-Labeled 6-Arm Randomized Clinical Trial Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: A common definition of "subthreshold" is that the diagnostic threshold is not met but the individuals are not asymptomatic. Some symptoms are present, causing significant difficulty in functioning and negatively impacting quality of life. Despite the attention given to subthreshold symptoms and the interventions for subthreshold symptoms being efficient in preventing the transition to psychiatric disease in primary care, reports on specific interventions are insufficient. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (IC

Efficacy of a 6-month supported online programme (Feeling Safer) for the treatment of persecutory delusions: protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Persecutory delusions are very common in severe mental health disorders such as schizophrenia. Existing treatments often do not work well enough. We developed a face-to-face theory-driven psychological intervention, called Feeling Safe, that produces very large reductions in persistent persecutory delusions. The challenge now is to make Feeling Safe widely available. So, we developed a 6-month supported online version, called Feeling Safer. The aim is an intervention that patients can easily access and use, reduces persecutory delusions and can be supported by a range of mental h

Postpartum thyroid dysfunction: clinical assessment and relationship to psychiatric affective morbidity.

OBJECTIVE: Postpartum thyroid dysfunction (PPTD), diagnosed using biochemical criteria, is usually transient with a wide range of reported prevalence rates. The specific clinical and psychiatric morbidity associated with PPTD is still uncertain. The aims of the study were to determine the point prevalence of PPTD in Australian women at 6 months postpartum and to assess the specific clinical and psychiatric morbidity in these women. DESIGN: Women who were Caucasian, aged 20-45 years and 4.5-5.5 months postpartum, were randomly selected and invited into the study. The respondents were assessed

Life events in panic disorder-an update on "candidate stressors".

Studies on gene-environment interactions in mental disorders are characterized by powerful genetic techniques and well defined "candidate genes," whereas a definition of "candidate stressors," in most cases assessed in the form of life events (LEs), is inconsistent or not even provided. This review addresses this problem, with particular attention to the clinical phenotype of panic disorder (PD), by providing an overview and critical discussion for which life events are known to contribute to the etiology of the disease and how they may be conceptualized. There is converging evidence for a sig

Keeping your eye on the process: body image, older women, and countertransference.

Research on body image and older women has grown in the past decade. However, there is a gap in the literature regarding body image, older women, and countertransference. This article provides 7 case examples of racially and ethnically diverse women over 60, drawn from MSW student and agency staff supervision, and participant feedback from a national conference on aging workshop. Themes related to loss and grief, adult daughter and aging mother issues, incest, anger, disability, personality disorders, phobic reactions, and shame are discussed. Recommendations and implications for social work p

The relationship between anxiety disorders and substance use among adolescents in the community: specificity and gender differences.

Using a sample of 781 adolescents (ages 13-17, 52.8% male) from a community survey, this study examined gender differences in the co-occurrence of specific anxiety disorders with substance use in adolescents. The associations between anxiety disorders and substance use differed according to the particular anxiety disorders and forms of substance use being examined, as well as by gender. Social phobia was associated with cigarette smoking among boys only. For girls, social phobia appeared to be negatively associated with drug use. For the other anxiety disorders, the associations with substance

Public attitude towards psychiatric treatment.

Past research on help-seeking behaviour and compliance among the mentally ill has mainly been focused on the examination of individual and structural determinants, while the impact of the socio-cultural context has been largely neglected. To examine this impact, we conducted a representative survey among German citizens who were eligible to vote. By means of vignettes describing different mental disorders we recorded the lay public's preferences for various treatment methods, together with their subjective reasons for voicing these particular preferences. While we found that psychotherapy was
