Prevalence of intestinal parasites in rural Southern Indians.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of intestinal protozoal and helminthic infection in a rural population. METHOD: Seventy-eight members of 15 families from a village were studied. Stool samples from all subjects were examined on alternate days for one month. RESULTS: The overall prevalence rate of various parasitic infections was 97.4%, with only 2 of 78 subjects not excreting parasites in any of their 15 samples. Eighteen (23.1%) persons had only one type of parasite, while 58 (74.3%) excreted multiple parasites. Giardia and Cryptosporidium were the commonest protozoan infections, affe

Polyparasitism on the Kenya coast. 1. Prevalence, and association between parasitic infections.

A partially-stratified sample survey of people living in the catchment area of Kilifi General Hospital, Coast Province, Kenya, identified 19 species of parasites in blood and intestines. Age-prevalence curves of the common infections were of two distinct types, possibly reflecting the host's ability to mount a partially effective immune response. Although statistically-significant associations between pairs of infections were clearly demonstrable, these were almost wholly explained by environmental heterogeneity and epidemiological coincidence. There was no evidence of positive or negative inf

Jejunal microflora in malnourished Gambian children.

Growth of bacteria greater than 10-5 organisms/ml was found in 22 children, of whom 17 gave a histroy of chronic diarrhoea. The other 8 children had either no diarrhoea or where having an acute attack lasting for a few days. In those with chronic diarrhoea, Esch. coli, bacteroides, and enterococci tended to occur more frequently, whereas streptococci occurred more frequently in those with acute diarrhoea. Bacilli, staphylococci, micrococci, klebsiellas, pseudomonads, and candidas often occurred in both groups and in large numbers in those with chronic diarrhoea. This confirms previous reports

Co-infection prevalence of helminths and associated risk factors among schoolchildren in the Lake Tana Basin, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Helminths are important public health infectious agents and are highly prevalent in the tropics, including Ethiopia. Schoolchildren are highly vulnerable to these parasitic infections due to several personal habits. Although their helminths co-infection prevalence is significant, less attention is given to understand the burden. So far prevention of helminths has been conducted for decades, their co-infections are still a major challenge in endemic areas. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the helminths co-infection prevalence and associated risk factors among schoolchildren

Parasitic colitis misdiagnosis as inflammatory bowel disease in high-income settings and association with poor clinical outcomes when exposed to corticosteroids: a systematic review of case reports.

OBJECTIVES: Parasitic colitis is highly prevalent worldwide, may mimic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and is encountered by non-specialist physicians in high-income, non-endemic settings. In this context, patients may be at risk of misdiagnosis and poor outcomes. However, cases are not routinely reported, limiting the evidence base to individual case reports. We aimed to systematically describe and evaluate the diagnosis, clinical course and outcomes of affected patients whose cases have been reported in high-income settings. DESIGN: A systematic review of the literature using the Preferred

Humans seropositive for Trypanosoma cruzi co-infected with intestinal helminths have higher infectiousness, parasitaemia and Th2-type response in the Argentine Chaco.

BACKGROUND: The Gran Chaco ecoregion is a well-known hotspot of several neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) including Chagas disease, soil-transmitted helminthiasis and multiparasitic infections. Interspecific interactions between parasite species can modify host susceptibility, pathogenesis and transmissibility through immunomodulation. Our objective was to test the association between human co-infection with intestinal parasites and host parasitaemia, infectiousness to the vector and immunological profiles in Trypanosoma cruzi-seropositive individuals residing in an endemic region of the Arge

Genus-level evolutionary relationships of FAR proteins reflect the diversity of lifestyles of free-living and parasitic nematodes.

BACKGROUND: Nematodes are a widespread and diverse group comprising free-living and parasitic species, some of which have major detrimental effects on crops, animals, and human health. Genomic comparisons of nematodes may help reveal the genetic bases for the evolution of parasitic lifestyles. Fatty acid and retinol-binding proteins (FARs) are thought to be unique to nematodes and play essential roles in their development, reproduction, infection, and possibly parasitism through promoting the uptake, transport, and distribution of lipid and retinol. However, the evolution of FAR family protein

Malaria Parasitemia in Febrile Patients Mono- and Coinfected with Soil-Transmitted Helminthiasis Attending Sanja Hospital, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Malaria is a life-threatening disease associated with high morbidity and mortality. Helminths are among the most widespread infectious agents prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions of the developing world. Malaria and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (STHs) are coendemic and major public health problems in Ethiopia. The effects of helminth coinfection on malaria parasitemia remained poorly understood. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess malaria parasitemia among malaria-monoinfected and malaria-soil-transmitted helminthiasis-coinfected febrile patients attendi

Prevalence of strongyloidiasis and schistosomiasis among migrants: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Global migration from regions where strongyloidiasis and schistosomiasis are endemic to non-endemic countries has increased the potential individual and public health effect of these parasitic diseases. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of these infections among migrants to establish which groups are at highest risk and who could benefit from screening. METHODS: We did a systematic review and meta-analysis of strongyloidiasis and schistosomiasis prevalence among migrants born in endemic countries. Original studies that included data for the prevalence of Strongyloides or Schisto

Distinct clinical characteristics and helminth co-infections in adult tuberculosis patients from urban compared to rural Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Differences in rural and urban settings could account for distinct characteristics in the epidemiology of tuberculosis (TB). We comparatively studied epidemiological features of TB and helminth co-infections in adult patients from rural and urban settings of Tanzania. METHODS: Adult patients (≥ 18 years) with microbiologically confirmed pulmonary TB were consecutively enrolled into two cohorts in Dar es Salaam, with ~ 4.4 million inhabitants (urban), and Ifakara in the sparsely populated Kilombero District with ~ 400 000 inhabitants (rural). Clinical data were obtained at recruitm

A systematic review on modelling approaches for economic losses studies caused by parasites and their associated diseases in cattle.

Parasites reside inside or outside their hosts and get host nutrition and blood. Here, we have emphasized economic losses in cattle caused by parasitic diseases due to ecto- and endo- parasites (flies, ticks, mites and helminths). We have outlined different methods/models including economic evaluation techniques and dynamic analysis as a major class, used for the calculation of economic losses caused by parasites in cattle. According to already conducted studies, a decrease in production is mentioned in quantity and percentage while financial losses are expressed in the form of account with re

Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infection and associated risk factors among village health volunteers in rural communities of southern Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal parasitic infections remain prevalent and constitute a public health problem in certain rural areas of Thailand. Village health volunteers (VHVs), who are members of a Thai healthcare alliance, function as key providers of health prevention measures, disease control, and health education and share national health promotion campaigns with community members. This study is aimed at evaluating the prevalence, intensity, and risk factors for intestinal parasitic infection in VHVs in order to design community awareness and health education campaigns for the target population.

Molecular appraisal of intestinal parasitic infection in transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: Diarrhoea is the main clinical manifestation caused by intestinal parasitic infections in patients, with special reference to transplant recipients who require careful consideration to reduce morbidity and mortality. Further, molecular characterization of some important parasites is necessary to delineate the different modes of transmission to consider appropriate management strategies. We undertook this study to investigate the intestinal parasitic infections in transplant recipients with or without diarrhoea, and the genotypes of the isolated parasites were also dete

Advances with the Chinese anthelminthic drug tribendimidine in clinical trials and laboratory investigations.

The anthelminthic drug tribendimidine has been approved by Chinese authorities for human use in 2004, and a first comprehensive review was published in Acta Tropica in 2005. Here, we summarise further advances made through additional clinical trials and laboratory investigations. Two phase IV trials have been conducted in the People's Republic of China, the first one enrolling 1292 adolescents and adults aged 15-70 years and the second one conducted with 899 children aged 4-14 years who were infected with one or multiple species of soil-transmitted helminths. Development and application of a TaqMan probe-based pentaplex qPCR for the rapid detection and differential identification of five pathogens.

Cryptosporidium parvum (Cp), Strongyloides stercoralis (Ss), Trypanosoma cruzi (Tc), Theileria ovis (To) and Echinococcus granulosus (Eg) are significant in causing similar clinical symptoms in both humans and animals. These symptoms include diarrhea, fever, pneumonia, hepatitis, encephalitis, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal diseases, as well as reproductive system diseases. Therefore, it is urgent to establish a rapid, specific, and sensitive method to simultaneously detect these five pathogens. Here, we develop a TaqMan probe-based pentaplex real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR (qPCR
